it's that time of year when countless people in countless schools and universities start thinking about running a d&d night, and I'm here to tell you: that's the devil talking. listen, I play a lot of games, D&D among them, and I run a LOT of events for college students. what you want is a game with dirt simple mechanics, character creation that can be completed in about a minute or less, and a contingency plan to split your attendees into groups if too many of them show up to reasonably play together. maybe something that doesn't even have dice idk. I'm not being a buzzkill I SWEAR I'm sincerely trying to save you from the horrors of a D&D night where 20 people show up and half of them have level 20 characters packing 16 magic items and a bad case of Main Character Syndrome and the other half are going to need to spend 45 minutes making their first character sheet ever. just play a different game man.
Sometimes we’re unsatisfied with a thing we made because when it only existed in our head, we saw all the things it could have been and when it’s done we know all the things that it isn’t, but we can’t see the way it expands into a million new things when someone else unpacks it in their head.
people who don’t wear glasses will never understand the absolute humiliation of dropping your glasses under your bed or in a dark area and feeling around on all fours muttering “my glasses…. where are my glasses” like fucking Velma Dinkley and thinking to yourself BOY WOULD THIS BE A LOT EASIER IF I COUKD FUCKING SEE
Friendly reminder that if you're gonna critize the Jedi, they have to be wrong.
"They told Anakin he wasn't fit to be a Jedi" Yeah, was he? He was unhappy the whole time, broke all their rules and eventually slaughtered them.
"They massacred the Sith Order" Yeah. Those "I'm better than everyone and everything and they all should kneel to me or die" people? I see no issue here.
"They fought in the Clone Wars as peacekeepers." Yeah. What was the alternative? Standing by as the clones, civilians and the Republic itself (the best government out those in the galaxy, although admittedly that's rather a low bar) were massacred by the Separatists? Yeah no. And peacekeepers ≠ pacifists.
"They forbid marriage." They are a religious organization, monks. Fobidding its members from marrying is pretty standard in monasteries. They also aren't celibate, friendship isn't discouraged at all and it's all but stated by Obi-Wan in TCW S6 that romantic feelings are perfectly allowed. Several of the Order's members practice their home planets' culture and religion and language (Barriss has a Mirilian Idol in her room, she Luminara Quinlan etc have cultural tattoos, many characters have accents which implies Basic isn't their first language and others don't speak Basic at all, etc). They have no dress code, they are allowed to drink, smoke, etc., even become part of other religions organizations (see Plo Koon)! Marriage being forbidden is nothing, literally meaningless next to the freedom Jedi have.
If you're gonna critize the Jedi, they have to be wrong.
No, they shouldn't change their whole way of life just because you don't like it.

"When I was your age, all I cared about was not starving. I was living in a hole in the ground, and a Jedi found me. She may have been desperate and ragged like me, but she told me I had potential. And that was…Well, she only taught me a little before they hunted her down. And they made me watch whilst they killed her." Just thinking about how, even in this Jedi's darkest hour, even when she was as run thin and desperate as a starving kid on the streets, even when she was being hunted down just for existing, this Jedi still saw a starving kid and took him under her wing, still told him he was worth something, still taught him about not hurting innocent people. This Jedi would have had so little left to her, but still saw someone she could help and took the chance. That this is who the Jedi are--even when they're ragged to the bone, they still look to help others, they still look to care for a kid they find on the street that they can teach things to, they still care so much about a kid that probably had no one who ever cared about him before, that her effect on Jod's life STILL shapes who he is. He tries so hard to be a murderous pirate who doesn't care about anyone, but you can see that he never actually wants to hurt anyone innocent and even lets his plans go down in flames rather than truly attack any of the parents or the kids. This Jedi may not have been with Jod for long, but even decades later, you can still see the echoes of how much she meant to him, how her loss shaped him, but also how her philosophy still rings in his ears.

Also an anthropology major. I remember reading about one anthropologist responding to another's reconstruction of the Neanderthal throat and hyoid placement. He said that yes, given that reconstruction, the Neanderthal would not have been able to speak. He then pointed out that it also would not have been able to swallow.

Weird when you first start paying attention to animal noises and realize they don't actually sound like the words we use
Like. I've never heard a duck go "Quack." Duck goes WAUK or ERK or HEHHHHH-HHH-H-H, if it's a Muskovy
Chickens are the most accurate with the buk-buk-buk noise, and baby chicks do in fact go "peep", but the "peep" is really more of a squeaky beEEP and adult hens will also bwuAAAAAAAAAAK-AUK-AUK-AUK-AUK.
Roosters do NOT "cock-a-doodle-doo", though. Roosters ER ER-ER ER ERRRRRRRR and they will do it at all ungodly hours of the day from sunrise to sunset.
Cows, again, pretty close with "Moo", but it feels like it needs an "r" in there somewhere. Like mmMMOUuuuure.
Sheep. Sheep really do actually "baa". I can't argue with that. Though an adult might also Phbrbobrbr, and a lamb will mostly MAAAH.
Horse sounds like NH-Hh-Hh-Hhr, or Pphft, or RIIIIII if shit's going down. So I guess "neigh" is fine.
Pigs. Pigs... they'd cab say oink, but only 'cause I don't know how to spell a deep, phlegmy sinus snort with English letters. f'gĥŭrhk, maybe. Pigs are beyond mortal laws.
Dog goes BOOF or Aurk or AuoooooooOOOOO unless it is a Husky or a Beagle. Husky goes AWOWOWOWOWOWeeeeeswAAAAUUGGHGGGGHGGOOOOIOOORAURAURAURA. Beagle goes weeeIGHIHIGHIGHIGHIWROWOOOOOWBROUROUROURBROUGHAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH in the voice of a dying adult man
Cat makes whatever noise it fucking wants
And turkeys, of course, say mrrrrr or WOBBLEOBBLEOBBLEOBBLEOBBLE all together at the same time like a terrifying hivemind. This is known
Percy Jackson is against bullying.
He is however very sad that neither Annabeth, Clarrise or Drew had met Octavian in camp Jupiter, because as much as he frowns on it he would pay any kind of money to see those three tear him a new one for acting like a little bitch he is.

I think the hardest part about addressing child abuse is getting people to acknowledge, not just intellectually but actually responding accordingly, is that the biggest threat to children, the biggest risk of abuse, is family and parents.
it is of course most often parents who are crowing about needing to protect children (often against far smaller threats than family), and pointing out that they are, statistically, the biggest threat to their kids is not gonna be received well.
tbh I feel like most of society’s rhetoric around “protecting children” comes from the same place as deep-patriarchy rhetoric on “protecting women”, where the idea is that they’re sacred and valuable but also treated essentially as property, and the the desire to protect them is largely experienced as a desire to ensure that those property rights are sacrosanct
Wow thats it
Going to Walmart when the nearly real people are out is amazing. Here are things I heard.
MOM: ALEX! If you run off again I'm gonna chew your head off!
WISE SMALL CHILD: You can't eat what you were.
DAD: I already said we're not getting that! Why are you still holding it?
ANOTHER WISE CHILD: Because you CAN'T TAKE AWAY MY LOVE!
MAN: Babe, we are just barely under budget! We did good!
WOMAN: We did really good!
MAN: Ooh look! They got those Japanese sodas!
WOMAN: Dude, no!
WOMAN TO HERSELF: My phone is ringing and where is it? Probably at the bottom of the fucking cart. Probably having a great time with the chicken. Dammit, Betty.

this was a historical moment in television
Apparently the rights to do this set back the budget for the rest of the season to like $5 and a peanut butter sandwich but it was abso-fucking-lutely worth every red cent
