Goodreads summary
Thereâs something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Priceâs attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. Heâs the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luceâand goes out of his way to make that very clearâshe canât let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret⌠even if it kills her.
First sentence
Around midnight, her eyes at last took shape.
Last sentence
âFight for the only thing she knew that was good enough, noble enough, powerful enough to be worth risking everything: Love.â
Favourite quote(s)
âIt pains me to see a Vegetarian covered in meat. Iâm very empathetic.â (Ok, I donât like that she said that sheâs empathetic. Could have left that out XD very much a Show Donât Tell moment.)
âThe woman gave Luz a âyou look like the reading sortâ smile that Luz had been getting from Librarians all her life.â (Lmao, desperate attempt to make Luz relatable to readers? XD)Â
âThe saddest looking thing in the room was the glimpse Luce caught of herself in the full length mirror behind the door.â
âThey both had a guy who was aggressively rude and uninterested in them.â (And yet, who they keep pursuing! For some reason!)
ââYou didnât get either one of my notes? [âŚ] But I handed them to Todd to pass to Cam to pass to you.â âPony Express,â Cam wedged his way in front of Penn and presented Luce with two folded scraps of paper held between his index and middle finger. âGive me a break! Did your horse die of exhaustion on the road?,â Penn huffed, snagging the notes, âI gave you those like an hour ago. What took so long?ââ (Ok, I actually love this interaction đ)
âCam ignored Mr. Cole and approached Luceâs mother, drawing her hand to his lips before anyone could even introduce them. âYou must be Luceâs older sister,â he said rakishly. To her left, Penn gagged into her elbow.â (SAME PENN SAME)
âIt might be worth all this hell at Sword and Cross just to spend a little more time with Daniel. Just to see if anything might come of it.â (OMG WHAT THE HELL)
âHe just gets me.â Does he? Name an example of when he got you
ââWill you tell me what I am?ââ (A vampire- no wait, wrong book) ââYouâre an angelâ [âŚ] surprised to see Daniel close his eyes and moan in pleasure.â (Ok- odd reaction-)
âIn this lifetime youâre nothing more than you appear to be. A stupid, selfish, ignorant, spoiled little girl, who thinks the world lives or dies on whether she gets to go out with some good looking boy at school.â Iâm sorry but I kind of agree đÂ

General notes/thoughts
(Notes I took while listening to the audiobook... completely out of context)
The idea of a reform school for criminals is interestingÂ
I wonder if Luce really is innocentÂ
Poor Gabby. She tried her best to help out of the kindness of her heart and all Luce did was assume the worst đÂ
Ok, so thereâs some sort of time loop where Daniel and Luz keep meeting? But only Daniel really remembers?
I canât believe Luce is already obsessed with Daniel đ even when heâs being an ass
ALSO IM JUST REMEMBERING THE PROLOGUE WHERE DANIEL SAYS HE KNEW A PAST VERSION OF LUCE WHEN SHE WAS A BABY- DOES THAT MEAN HE WATCHED HER GROW UP AND WAITED FOR HER TO BE OLD ENOUGH- CAUSE THAT'S GROSS
So far, the only thing Iâm getting is that Luceâs only interest and only thing to talk about is guys. I donât think this book would pass the Bechdel Test
Luce is what âNice Guysâ think women are like
Bloody hell, itâs a love triangle now
As always, with one option that is clearly healthier, but the protagonist obviously wonât choose
LUCE! YOU FINALLY HAD AN INTERESTING HOBBY (besides reading, because you have to be relatable) THAT DOESN'T INVOLVE OBSESSING OVER GUYS. YOU COULD HAVE WON THE SWIMMING RACE. YOU KNOW, DO SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF. BUT NO. YOU HEARD THE NAME DANIEL AND YOU JUST HAD TO STOP. MY GOD. Way to show that the protagonist cares about a guy whoâs been nothing but rude to her, and who she thinks is involved with another girl more than herself. Why not show that Luce is more than just who sheâs interested in by her pushing forward through the race, instead of letting Gabbie or Daniel ruin it. AND THEN YOU HAVE THE AUDACITY TO SAY IT WAS GABBIEâS FAULT. NO, LUCE. IT WAS YOUR FAULT. YOU LET YOURSELF GET DISTRACTED.Â
Iâm just saying, if the roles were reversed and Daniel was a girl and Luce a guy, she would be seen as an absolute creep.
Oh my lord, Daniel really is her only priority, what on earth
Ohhh, hold on, is Cam dangerous? Why did Gabbie stop Luce from eating his figs?
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN âGabbieâs sudden kindnessâ SHES BEEN NOTHING BUT KIND THIS WHOLE TIME YOU JUST KEEP ASSUMING SHES SOME SORT OF MONSTER BECAUSE SHE HAS THE AUDACITY TO SPEAK TO THE BOYS YOURE INTERESTED IN?! HEY! NEWSFLASH! THEY ARE NOT YOUR PROPERTY!
âA pink-lipped, blonde sedustressâ OH MY FUCKING GOD LUCE YOU ARE SUCH A JEALOUS JERK THE ONLY REASON YOU DISLIKE GABBIE IS BECAUSE YOURE TOO INSECURE TO FATHOM THAT OTHER GIRLS ARE ALLOWED TO TALK TO GUYS
WHAT THE HELL DOES BEING BLONDE HAVE TO DO WITH IT OTHER THAN YOUR PROBABLY HELLA SEXIST AND PREJUDICE VIEW OF WOMEN (that we also see in the first chapter, when she canât decide if the person introducing her to the rules of the school is female or male and then shes like âdefinitely a woman, too catty to be a manâ LIKE WHAT THE HELL)Â
OH MY GOD LUCE GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT! I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D CHOOSE GOING SOMEWHERE WITH DANIEL OVER CALLING YOUR PARENTS OR BEST FRIEND WHICH YOU CAN ONLY DO ONCE A WEEK
So, youâre telling me Luceâs seemingly loving and worried parents sent her to a boarding school full of criminals without even having a look at the campus?
Pleaseee not Luceâs speech to Daniel about how academically successful she used to be and her academic interestsÂ
Whyâs this the first time weâre hearing of it? So far, the only thing youâve shown real interest in is boys. Why havenât we heard more about how much all your effort feels like a waste now that youâre stuck at Reformation school? Why do you act like your whole life is dependent on who is attracted to you? Weâve been told that she reads and likes maths in one-off sentences. But we havenât seen it, have we? She hasnât talked about any books sheâs reading or the maths that sheâs doing. What does she like to read? Fiction? Non-fiction? Horror? Romance? How does that influence her real life? The book tries so hard to make her relatable by making her a ânerdâ but it doesnât want to invest any time or effort actually showing that in her personality.
The book also canât decide on Danielâs personality. Is he closed off or does he keep wanting to pursue stolen moments with Luce? Is he ready to fight any threat of or is he anxious about dangers to come? Is he annoyed by Luce pursuing him or not? It doesnât make sense. Yes, I know characters can have ambiguous feelings, but why the hell does Daniel go from being rude to Luce in one moment to sneaking her away to then running off again? Make up your mind.Â
And seriously, what do they even like about each other? At least one moment where one smiles at what the other is doing (for example, a scene where you can tell that Daniel is enamoured by Luceâs competitiveness or Luce gets flustered at how observant Daniel is. You know, actual character traits. Love rather than lust. Not just âomg, heâs so hot.â But something like butterflies and heart flutters and subtle hand-holding.
The dumbest thing is: without the romance there would be no plot. But if you take out the unique concept that the book has (the school), the plot could still go on, pretty unchanged. It literally does not matter that the students are criminals.
The sad thing is, I love the idea of an immortal looking for their lover over and over again. I just donât like this insincere and one-dimensional approach.
BAHAHA I love Daniel talking about all of Luceâs past lifetimes. Comes to show that this one has to be the least interesting and least romanticÂ
I love that Roland has a catalogue for all the things he smuggles đ Â
OMG ARE ALL THE STUDENTS ANGEL LMAO
THEY KILLED PENN WHAT THE HELL- THAT WAS LIKE- THE ONLY CHARACTER I WAS INTERESTED IN BESIDES GABBIE
MISS SOFIA WHAT THE HECK
If I had a penny for every time a love triangle book that I didnât love ended with a twist villain trying to sacrifice the protagonist, Iâd have two pennies. Which isnât a lot but itâs weird that it happened twice.
Ok, ngl, good foreshadowing on the whole âLuce canât be reincarnated cause sheâs not baptisedâ thing
âIn this lifetime youâre nothing more than you appear to be. A stupid, selfish, ignorant, spoiled little girl, who thinks the world lives or dies on whether she gets to go out with some good looking boy at school.â Iâm sorry but I kind of agree đÂ
Itâs a shame. I feel like the book had more potential.
It really is a lot like twilightÂ
Iâm not going to finish the series- but hey, itâs not the worst book Iâve read
Ok, you know what annoys the hell out of me? Itâs not just this book. This book is just unlucky because itâs the one I most recently read. Ok, hereâs what annoys me and makes me sad: Why does every single book where the protagonist is a teenage or adult girl always have to have a love interest or a love triangle?? Canât we have interesting female characters without a boyfriend? Cause books with male protagonists are not treated the same when it comes to love interests. Like, I think of LotR, Hobbit, Sherlock Holmes, (Percy Jackson, Harry Potter; yes I know in these cases both start out as children and they eventually get girlfriends, but theyâre not annoying about it! There itâs like, best friend turned crush turned girlfriend). Why do female protagonists always have to be portrayed as drama-queens who donât know what they want and who seem to drop absolutely everything as soon as the question of the love interest shows up for no better reason other than heâs âomg, so hotâ? The reason I shy away from books when I see the mention of romance like âbut then, a hot guy called Leo shows upâ or âher hatred turns into fiery passionâ or âshe must choose between her heart and âŚâ, often after a pretty interesting premise, is because EVERY SINGLE BOOK IVE READ THAT DOES THIS TURNS FROM A REALLY COOL FANTASY STORY WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR MULTIDIMENSIONAL CHARACTERS INTO A WATTPAD STORY WHERE EVERYONE IS CONSTANTLY HORNY OR JEALOUS AND THEY CALL IT âLOVEâ. You know what books do romance with a female protagonist well? The Raven Cycle. Characters who can stand on their own and are interesting on their own, and who fall in love naturally because they genuinely like each other.
