the thing about having a job is i just donât want to do it. Sorry
i would rather be doing literally anything else. to be honest and open with everyone
pioneering something called "gritted teeth optimism" where everything is gonna turn out okay even if i have to bite and claw and gnash my way through it
Andrea Gibson, Birthday
In the first poetry workshop I ever took my professor said we could write about anything we wanted except for two things: our grandparents and our dogs. She said she had never read a good poem about a dog. I could only remember ever reading one poem about a dog before that pointâa poem by Pablo Neruda, from which I only remembered the lines âWe walked together on the shores of the sea/ In the lonely winter of Isla Negra.â Four years later I wrote a poem about how when I was a little girl I secretly baptized my dog in the bathtub because I was afraid she wouldnât get into heaven. âIs this a good poem?â I wondered. The second poetry workshop, our professor made us put a bird in each one of our poems. I thought this was unbelievably stupid. This professor also hated when we wrote about hearts, she said no poet had ever written a good poem in which they mentioned a heart. I started collecting poems about hearts, first to spite her, but then because it became a habit I couldnât break. The workshop after that, our professor would tell us the same story over and over about how his son had died during a blizzard. He would cry in front of us. He never told us we couldnât write about anything, but I wrote a lot of poems about snow. At the end of the year he called me into his office and said, âlooking at you, one wouldnât think youâd be a very good writerâ and I could feel all the pity inside of me curdling like milk. The fourth poetry workshop I ever took my professor made it clear that poets should not try to engage with popular culture. I noticed that the only poets he assigned were men. I wrote a poem about that scene in Grease 2 where a boy takes his girlfriend to a fallout shelter and tries to get her to have sex with him by tricking her into believing that nuclear war had begun. It was the first poem I ever published. The fifth poetry workshop I ever took our professor railed against the word blood. She thought that no poem should ever have the word âbloodâ in it, they were bloody enough already. She returned a draft of my poem with the word blood crossed out so hard the paper had torn. When I started teaching poetry workshops I promised myself I would never give my students any rules about what could or couldnât be in their poems. They all wrote about basketball. I used to tally these poems when Iâd go through the stack I had collected at the end of each class. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 poems about basketball. This was Indiana. Eventually I couldnât take it anymore. I told the class, âfor the next assignment no one can write about basketball, please for the love of god choose another topic. Challenge yourselves.â Next time I collected their poems there was one student who had turned in another poem about basketball. I donât know if he had been absent on the day I told them to choose another topic or if he had just done it to spite me. Itâs the only student poem I can still really remember. At the time I wrote down the last lines of that poem in a notebook. âHe threw the basketball and it came towards me like the sunâ

dreamed that kindergarten nap was called sleep class and everybody went to sleep including the teacher. if you were awake it would get a little bit foggy outside and grey and cloudy, and these guys would start approaching the classroom from behind the tree line (forgive my shitty phone drawing)
and they were at least a story tall, some of them were taller, you could see their legs over the trees. they would approach very slowly. this one (the one i drew) had a name for some reason, his name is kick.
before i was totally awake my brain conjured a meme of a bunch of these guys approaching from the treeline and a child watching from the window with the caption âwhen you the only one awake in sleep class đđłđâ
ok this is TERRIFYINGLY close to what i saw in my head while i was sleeping thank you.
Being part of the social justice culture or the âstay wokeâ culture, I usually thought that the main purposes were to:
1) Unlearn what was taught to you
2) Learn what was never taught to you
3) Educate those around you with the knowledge you have
But you seeâŚ
You will come across people that will ask questions that may sound problematic but they just genuinely are confused about the matter and just want to learn
I had a white girl, sweet as hell, that was curious about why White people canât say the N-word but Black people can say it.
Now⌠If this was Black Tumblr/Twitter, y'all wouldve ate her alive and spit her out. Like, why would you ask a question like that????
I didnt take any offense to the question, because again, you have to educate.
I broke it down simplyâŚ
âBitch was a term used by men against women⌠If you call your female friend âmy bitchâ, theres nothing wrong with that⌠but if a guy did the same thing to his female friend, that wouldnt not look too goodâŚâ
Then she understood! She doesnt like when men call her or other women bitches but she noticed how women call each other bitches (almost) all the time in a friendly context.
Some SJW ppl would resort to just straight ridicule. Like relentlessly roast you, and you just wanted to ask a question, get your answer, and just go.
I understand some people would come outta nowhere with smartass comments and deserve that roasting, im 120% for that, but yall really need to learn the difference between those 2 groups of people.
I remember saying/doing something problematic not too long ago. This guy just went off on me, called me stupid, and vaguely explained why what I did was problematic. When I asked for a more in-depth answer as to why it was an issue, he didnt want to explain, he didnt have the âenergyâ to explain but had plenty of energy to say what i did was wrong and i was stupid to do it.
To this day, I STILL dont know exactly what was wrong but I am avoiding that action for sure.
To cut it shortly for yall,
Some people genuinely dont know what they do/say was wrong. Some ask questions to learn and educate themselves. RelaxâŚ
Ridicule or slander shouldnt be a first option to everything, if anything, its more counterproductive. Not to mention yall do this for notes and attention on social media.
ALL. OF. THIS.
This shits still relevant
OPâs #1, Unlearn what was taught to you, includes unlearning behaviors like jumping down someoneâs throat when they ask an honest question.
Just because you know the answer and have known it for years and years as the most obvious thing in the world, doesnât mean the asker has had access to the same knowledge.
When I say âunlearnâ this, Iâm talking about unlearning the false-equality judgment that parents and other adults inflict on the children around them. When a parent snaps at a child for not knowing everything the parent knows, they dismiss the divergence in their life paths. They also send a negative message that makes it harder to trust and open up to them later on.
Letâs do better. Yes, even now. Itâs never too late to learn new things.
biden calling trump a clown not once but twice during a national televised presidential debate. and then circus workers contacting a cnn spokesperson to say that they dont want to be associated with trump like that. 2020 politics.
for people asking, yes the second part actually happened. van jones was contacted by a circus representative who felt the need to comment and this was aired maybe 5min after the debate ended during the anderson cooper round table discussion segment
