Dear Younger Me,

Brace yourself.

One day, you're going to change your mind about something you once defended with your whole chest. When that day comes, you're going to think the sky will fall. Trust me, it won't.

Right now, you believe changing your mind is a sign of weakness. You think once you say something out loud, you must defend it forever. You think that if you switch lanes, people will whisper.

Well...I say let them. You are not a contract. You are allowed to change your mind, and you will have many chances to practice that.

You will choose a career and later realise it no longer fits the woman you are becoming. You will hold opinions tightly and then life will laugh softly and prove you wrong. You will commit to certain dreams, and later dream bigger ones. You will pour into friendships and later accept that not everyone is meant to stay.

Each time this shift happens, it will shake you. But growth is uncomfortable and it stretches you beyond who you used to be. You will outgrow people, places, and versions of yourself - that's just part of life. You are not a sellout, nor a hypocrite. You are growing.

Adulthood is not about planting your flag and guarding it for life. It's about having the courage to move it when wisdom demands it. And I wish I could tattoo this next nugget on your forehead so you never forget: your life is not a public performance, you do not owe the world a permanent position statement. You owe yourself alignment.

So change your mind. Change it when your peace depends on it. Do not hold yourself hostage to a contract you never signed.

because obviously society is incredibly invested in telling women that there’s only one way to feel attraction and it’s the way they feel attraction to men (even if they might not feel any attraction to men at all outside of compulsory heterosexuality) and if their attraction to women feels even a little bit different then obviously it’s not ~real~ and they’re really just straight. but that’s horseshit.

there’s a billion reasons why experiencing attraction to women and experiencing attraction to men would differ for women like, oh, i don’t know, the fact that our virulently homophobic and misogynist society grooms young women into heterosexuality before they’ve even learned to walk or talk while they’re explicitly dissuaded from any same gender feelings.

there’s an entire script for how women are supposed to feel about men laid out for them before they can even start forming an identity: this is what you’re supposed to want (a nice nuclear family), this is what you’re supposed to fantasize about (countless heterosexual narratives in media and the dominant rhetoric around sex), this is what you’re supposed to desire; it’s enforced by peers, media, the state, the education system, everyone around them. there’s no script for how women are “supposed” to be attracted to women apart from, yknow, not at all.

but because there’s so little modelling of lesbian attraction it’s really fucking difficult for some people to identify if it’s present or not, because what does its presence encompass? what does it mean to be attracted to a woman, what does it mean to want to fuck a woman, or be fucked by one, or to love one, or to want one, when you are afab and only have this roadmap for Wanting Men.

and i can only encourage those people to fuckin give Wanting Women a shot, and if you aren’t sure how to do it, to wander around the internet and see how other people are doing it. approach lesbian lust and desire with curiosity and intrigue, take comfort in the knowledge that there is no one model, but that the many models of love that exist for us are shaped differently to the extremely powerful heteronormative narrative that we all grow up with.

and like there’s also this narrative of Knowing You Are Queer which like, that is the case for some people! but for a lot of us it’s more like, I Can’t Say I’m Not Queer Definitively? and if that’s where you’re at - you don’t need permission but if you want it, here’s Official Dyke Permission to just imagine that you are queer. does it prompt relief? comfort? curiosity? terror? be curious about your own responses to the idea of not being straight.

sometimes our cues aren’t the presence of knowing we are something, but instead the absence of knowing we are not. it’s hard to know something that you’ve never seen before, or have only seen in ways that don’t feel good for you. allow yourself the space to be unsure, and have confidence in the knowledge that that uncertainty is allowed to have meaning.
