Theseus Through hearing from many in the past about the bloody marring of your sight, I recognized it was you, son of Laius; and now on coming here, through sight I am more fully certain. [555] For your clothing and that heart-rending face alike assure me that it is you. And in all compassion I ask you, ill-fated Oedipus, with what petition to the city and to me have you taken your place here, you and the poor maiden at your side. Declare it. Dire indeed must be the fortune which you tell, [560] for me to stand aloof from it; since I know that I myself also was reared in exile, just as you, and that in foreign lands I wrestled with perils to my life, like no other man. [565] Never, then, would I turn aside from a stranger, such as you are now, or refuse to help in his deliverance. For I know well that I am a man, and that my portion of tomorrow is no greater than your
Sophocles' Oedipus at Colonus, 552-569. Translation by Richard Jebb.
Theseus I cannot counsel you . . . rather than to go on suffering. There is not a man alive that has wholly escaped misfortune's taint, [1315] nor any god either, if what poets sing is true. Have they not intermarried in ways that law forbids? Have they not thrown fathers into ignominious chains to gain the sovereign power? Still they inhabit Olympus and brave the issue of their crimes. [1320] And yet what shall you say in your defence, if you, a child of man, take your fate excessively hard, while they, as gods, do not? No, then, leave Thebes in compliance with the law, and come with me to the city of Pallas. There, when I have purified you of your pollution, [1325] I will give you homes and the half of all I have. Yes, I will give you all those presents I received from the citizens for saving their fourteen children, when I slew the bull of Crete; for I have plots of land assigned me throughout the country; these shall henceforth [1330] be called after you by men, while you live; and at your death, when you have gone to Hades' halls, the whole city of Athens shall exalt your honor with sacrifices and a monument of stone. For it is a noble crown of a good reputation [1335] for citizens to win from Hellas, by helping a man of worth. This is the return that I will make you for saving me, for now you are in need of friends. But when the gods honor a man, he has no need of friends; for the god's aid, when he chooses to give it, is enough.
Euripides' Heracles, 1313-1339. Translation by E.P. Coleridge.
Fleeing blood pollution: Philochoros says that the Pallantidai were destroyed by Theseus in the following way [frg. 108]. “When Pallas had in mind to attack the Athenians, he openly set out with his force towards the city, taking the route from Sphettos. Meanwhile his sons, in accordance with their father’s plan, set up an ambush at Gargettos with their companions. The intention was for Pallas to make a synchronized attack, when the sons made their sortie against the Athenians. With this first assault, they hoped to take the city. A man who acted as herald for Pallas, informed Theseus of what was happening. Theseus immediately attacking with his companions, annihilated them.” The story goes like this: Nisos and Pallas and Aigeus were three brothers, all sons of Pandion. Nisos dwelt at Megara, while Aigeus and Pallas came from separate districts since synoecism had not yet taken place in Attika. It is said that Theseus, who was first cousin of the sons of Pallas, destroyed one of them who was plotting to claim the kingdom. [Others told the story thus. They say that Theseus destroyed the Pallantid sons, while they were lying in ambush in order to attack the city.] But there was a law that, because of the pollution, those who shed the blood of kindred and relatives should suffer a year’s banishment: he therefore made himself an exile. He also transferred his wife to nearby Troizen (where he had kindred), separating himself from her and from the whole Peloponnese. It was customary for those avoiding trial for murder to spend one year in exile from the fatherland.
Scholia in Euripidem, vol. 2, ed. E. Schwartz. Berlin 1891. Hippolytos 35 – pp. 9-10. Translation by Mary Emerson.
Archialogical article: "They were highly adept at avoiding war"
Me: I don't even need the thousands of orally passed down war hymns to know that is a bold faced lie.
Theseus Retelling Ideas:
Sections for if the tragedy is happening to Theseus
Book 1 - Road to Athens (Theseus learns who he is, and sets out for athens freeing the people along the way)
Delphi has archiological evidense to athens having a foothold there, and mythological tradition to Cretian foothold as well.
Delphi has an old tradition of belonging to Gaia and Poseidon
What is his relationship with his grandpa? What is his mom's relationship with her dad?
Introduce the question of if his father is Aegeus or Posiedon. His mom firmly claims both.
Should I introduce Herakles? The story where Theseus attack's Herakles' lion coat thinking it is a lion in his home? Will I have to write a book about Herakles later if I do, can I or do I want to try that?
Why does Theseus leave? Is he forced to leave? Does he want glory? Just to see his dad? To try and take over keeping the land safe from Herakles now that he is captive in Lydia.
Periphetes-
Sinis-
The Crommyonian Sow - maybe go with the version where the "sow" is a woman robber? The story could use more lady Villains other than Medea
Sciron - path was already narrow and dangerous
Ceryon -
Procrustes -
If Theseus is just trying to keep the land safe, does he avoid Athens? And if so why does he end up in Athens anyway?
As he reaches athens ask the question of who was his father is again.
Book 2 - Tested at Athens (Theseus arrives at Athens and must prove who he is and outsmart Medea)
Athens asks Theseus' heritage, he doesn't know how or if he should answer
Theseus vs athenian politics 1.0 -Medea
Introduce Hecele
Theseus vs the Marathonian Bull
Return to Athens
Aegeus and Medea plot Theseus' death
Theseus proven Aegeus' son
Theseus vs athenian politics 2.0 -sons of pallas
When he wins the sons of Pallas are only scattered
Book 3 - Salvation of Athens (Theseus and the minotaur)
Ancient greek hunger games
Go with the version where Minos chooses Theseus personally? Could be very angsty, like you took my son I'll take yours
Include Daedelus?
Should I go with plutarch's Taurous idea? Normal Minotaur? Work the foreign god Baal Hammon in? All three?
If I go with a regular Minotaur, I think I will go with Pasphae creating it with sorcery
If I go with baal hammon AND use Daedelus in the story; Daedelus will be from the first round of tributes and one of the few not sacrificed to baal hammon, leaving him a slave in Minos castle
Can the minotaur in any of these be reasoned with? Does Theseus try?
Can I work in a return of Medea? She did return to Colchis after her son by Aegeus. Maybe she stopped at Crete just to screw over Minos and Theseus one last time? Maybe she is the one to convince Ariadne to help Theseus? Maybe she sets Dionysus sights on Ariadne too?
Does Phasiphae curse them? Is it Aegeus' curse? Maybe Medea's? It might even have a nice amount of angst if it is a side affect of Poseidon's curse on Minos.
Does Theseus lose Ariadne through death? Does Dionisus kidnap her? Does Dionysus just demand Theseus give Ariadne to him? The storm tearing the ship away from shore? Is there something that would hurt more?
I kinda want to make Theseus find his dad's body on the water instead of on the shore?
At some point it is proven Theseus is Posiedon's son. Is it a divine miracle? Adoption? Something else?
Sections to write if the tragedy IS Theseus
Book 4 -? (Theseus and the kidnapping of persephone/introduction of Hypolytta)
Theseus tries to fill the void of Ariadne
He marries Phaedra as a way to try and literally replace Ariadne since they are sisters
Meeting Pirithous distracts him for a little while, but his trying to forget his past and his misery, blinds him to the fact that Pirithous isn't much different than the monsters he used to hunt.
They go and fight the amazons, Theseus returns with Hyppolyta, Hyppolytus is born.
The Helen/Persephone debacle occurs and Theseus is faced with what he has become while imprisoned in Hades
Book 5 - A slow death of Athens (the tragedy of Hypolytus)
I need to read the tragedy(ies) to have better ideas how to adapt this part of the story.
Theseus returns home to athens sacked due to Hellen.
Phaedra is ruling what is left?
She has tried to force Hippolytus to marry her to make her reign legitimate?
Hippolytus tries to claim Artemis to escape her?
med people are so annoying "This family's 8 year old child who was about to go through a major surgery and kept crying that she was hungry so they pitied her and gave her food, she then had a heart attack in the surgery. They're so stupid 😒" girl they didn't know that could happen or why it happens. it takes so little time to explain to them that will happen instead of telling them "no food" with no explanation 10 times
"Before surgery, your body’s reflexes that protect your airway are relaxed by anesthesia. If there’s food or liquid in your stomach, it will near certainly come back up and go into your lungs, which can cause choking, a severe lung / heart infection or even a heart attack. That’s called aspiration, and it is life-threatening. It's hard, but it's only a single day to prevent near certain death. Not eating or drinking beforehand massively lowers the risk and helps prevent these life threatening situations under anesthesia." <- TIP: patients have brains which allows them to receive information just like you

pet peeve is when you look up fashion references from a specific era and you keep getting modern day '[era]-inspired' fashion like NO i want authenticity damn it. i can see your 2020 photo quality and your 2020 hair and your 2020 makeup. youre not fooling me.
hello i'm a historical fashion researcher and i have a lot of experience looking up things! this is a very widely experienced irritation and you're definitely not alone in this, but i am here to share everything i know!
so, ways to get around this:
turn off AI results. they're literally nonsense to us
don't use pinterest because the sources/provenance is often hard to trace
a standard internet search can be okay, but museum collections are the top tier (list of collections below this list)
instead of broad terms like victorian, regency, tudor, renaissance etc. try using the decade you're looking for. if you're not sure of what decade it is but have a vague image in your head, look on the fashion history timeline and just jump around until you find it. but even changing to e.g. 19th century will give better results than victorian
including terms like womenswear/menswear, daywear, formal wear, evening wear, court dress should increase the value of your search too
including "fashion plates" in your search can give you a nice impression of the intended silhouettes of the era. some of these might be a little stylised but will show you what was considered in vogue
for pre-fashion plate eras or things like makeup and styling, you'll have to look at portraiture or manuscripts. these are harder to actually find what you're looking for, but searching museum collections and limiting results to specific date ranges will be your friend
when looking at art, do bear in mind sometimes artists would paint fabric extra flow-y to show off their skills. it might not have been exactly like that in terms of fabric weight or drape. so, a pinch of salt required!
if you find something on image search where the provenance is dubious, reverse image search and you might find a source! i've been able to trace random pinterest images to real sources, but this does take a lot of time and effort and is often not worth the headache
some online resources and museum collections:
fashion history timeline is an invaluable resource if you're trying to get a feel for everything and should be your first port of call. it'll also link to good examples
the met has a vast number of extant examples of clothing, as well as fashion plates
costume institute fashion plates is a subcollection of the met for fashion plates (1800s-1922)
v&a also has many extant garments, fashion plates, and incredible articles on clothing and aesthetics. read the details of the objects because they'll often reveal a lot about the piece
lacma is good for C19th-20th pieces
nypl digital collection for photographs
national portrait gallery or similar for portraiture, or literally any museum in your country that has historical art
national museums scotland can be useful situationally but might be oddly specific
stout style history is a great collection for finding image references for fat people wearing historical clothes. survival bias of a lot of museum pieces tends towards smaller clothing that couldn't be repurposed, but this aims to counter that. it's not sortable, but is still a really nice resource
wikimedia commons is surprisingly handy! and the images, if you should need to link/repost them, are public domain
auction websites sound like a funny one to recommend. some won't have mannequins and some will. just look up historical garment auctions and you'll find some!
anyway, i hope this has been a good place to start for anyone interested! there are probably some i've missed because there are so many museums across the world and i don't know about all of them or can't remember them. but these are the ones i've used the most! (my specialisation/jobs i've had to research for have only really been in western fashion, so my resources reflect that)
Tolkien writing The Hobbit: haha here my young son here is a lighthearted tale loosely impacted by my participation in the War to End All Wars
Tolkien writing Lord of the Rings: here my adult son here is a massive tome highly impacted by my participation in the War to End All Wars. For you. In the trenches. I hope you like the line “don’t adventures ever have an end”
Nothing makes you feel quite as unclean as looking up ancient punishments for conquered royalty.
So specifically I was looking up blinding because I need a tragedy to happen to a certain character and while I'd usually just kill him off, I need him to still be around for another character, and that seemed like something horrific enough to work for the story on both sides. But like now I know it was basically a means of torture and vengence, and it was historically used on a four year old... So yeah I'm a little haunted now.
I am so annoyed that here Bible app I have found that allows you to start hearing audio from anywhere in the chapter, and not just at the beginning, allowing me to actually start up where I left off.
Not because I dislike the app or their organization really (though I admit all I know is what their website says), but because their whole advertising thing is about bringing women's voices into the audio Bible arena. And while I have nothing against that, every add starts with "have you every wanted to hear the Bible read by a woman?" And like no? Again all of us should be reading our Bibles, but like when I look for audio I'm looking for a grandpa kind of voice? Mostly I think because I have very fond memories of my Opa reading, teaching, and singing the Bible (though I have yet to find a audio bible with dutch accented english translation, let alone a dutch accented french-canadian english translation😂 but I understand that is asking a bit much at that point, and might as well just call up Opa and ask him to read the Bible for me, lol) so like old man is my favorite nostalgia thing. But like herbible really needs to branch out and find more to sell about themselves than just "we have women reading the Bible!" To get me to say more than "yes, and?"

So I remember each book in the Simply Alex series
Book 1: A False Queen
Books 2: Stolen Heir
Book 3: Simply Alex
You know what I want to see more of in fantasy? Male fortune tellers, we don’t have enough of them. Like seriously why are there so few of them?
Nothing makes you feel quite as unclean as looking up ancient punishments for conquered royalty.
Having a writer fiance is dangerous, they are enablers for all your bad writing ideas.
Me realizing Simply Alex isn't "simply" about a girl (Alex) escaping a country that a) hurt her, and b) was being destroyed. But is more about a boy (İlkay) who is really Samuel choosing David, but İlkay is also David having to watch Jonathan die because he never had the courage to kill Saul, so he has to ask Alex to kill him but it is still too late and the throne is going to someone else someone who is both infinitely better and worse than he could ever be.

Simply Alex scene that may or may not make the cut:
Ilkay took another breath, praying for the bravery.
"Please my lady, sir knight... I know you feel safe here, I wouldn't want to do anything to ruin that either... but the vision was clear. Only one of noble blood can free Avalon again, please! The people suffer!" He whispered with feeling, not even daring to look up.
Across from him Alex smacked her hand down her spoon, transforming it into a dagger, and shoving away from the table in anger.
It felt like even the fire in the hearth held it's breath.
"My son will not die for you like that! I will not sacrifice him like that!" She snarled clutching the knife but not yet pointing it at him.
Beside her Markus hadn't even flinched.
Ilkay wished he had that kind of fortitude.
His hands shook like leaves under the table, but at the corner of his eye that God forsaken vision chain was already writhing in through the door. Had it gotten bigger?
"I wasn't talking about your son." He said before he could stop himself.
The shock of that was apparent on her frame, she almost lost hold of the knife.
"What... who then?" She asked
"You my queen." Ilkay replied. "You are the reason for this war after all"
She fell back into her seat like a puppet with their strings cut. Markus finally moved, reaching to catch her.
"What do you mean by that?" He hissed angrily.
Ilkay kept his eyes on queen Alexandra, and answered. "I was the one to bind you and king Kieran. I know how he used you..."
Shame colored her cheeks the way it only could on the skin of nobles.
"You know how seriously our God takes vows like that. We allowed that in our city, in His temple." (I allowed it by never saying anything he thought.) "Only you or your bloodline can turn away such Vengeance. The people don't deserve this. Please forgive them."

Too many writers are using generative 'AI' to make their book covers, so I've written a guide on how to make your own cover for free or cheap without turning to a machine.
If you can't afford to pay an artist, you CAN make your own!
I hope this is a helpful overview that covers the basics and points to some free resources.
I annoyed my cat by writing this and not playing with her; you might find it useful?
This is a fantastic guide not only to the technical aspect of cover design but the aesthetic aspect as well!
This is GREAT STUFF. Highly recommend! Exactly the techniques I have used on covers in the past, and they look great!
