Being the bookworm that I am, I managed to meet and bond with one of my best friends over Brandon Sanderson’s “The Way of Kings”. I turned 21 a week ago and my best friend gave me a signed hard copy as a belated birthday gift and symbol of our friendship. I’m completing geeking out!,

Olá from São Miguel Island! I’m currently taking a break from my online class to enjoy vacation with family! But being the nerd that I am, I managed to find a learning opportunity.

Little fun fact about me: I’m really passionate about sustainability and environmental science! So naturally, I was very excited to visit a pineapple plantation. While this plantation is pretty old school in regards to technology, it’s a beautiful sight for witnessing sustainability in action!

So how does this work? Well, when it rains, the waters runs off the roofs of the glass greenhouses. The water gathers at the flat surface of the roof, and is collected by workers. Workers then store the rain water in an above ground cistern that shelters lots of little fish. The fish do their part by keeping the water clean; they eat insects and other debris that enters the pool. When it’s time to water the pineapples, workers don’t have to waste additional water since they have their own collection!

To any studyblrs out there studying geology, environmental science, or sustainability, I highly recommend visiting São Miguel. This place is a beautiful educational gold mine!

Personal Life Update:

My friends and family back home asked me why I fell off the face of the planet this semester, so I made them this. Behold: Most of the assignments and events that I experienced this semester. Obviously, I left certain events off of the list and failed to mention how I didn’t feel like myself for a good chunk of the semester.

I really pushed myself this semester; I refused to let my personal life interfere with my academics and grades. It paid off since I received As in three of my classes (one of my other classes has yet to release grades).

I’m in a much better place now (Thank God), so hopefully I’ll be more active on here, especially since I’m taking two summer courses!

Personal life update:

I apologize for my lack of consistency with posts. Between the amount of work this semester, mental health things, and other stressors, I’ve been having a difficult time balancing it all. These past two weeks have been my most productive weeks of the semester and I’m really happy my grades haven’t slipped. I’m doing my best and that’s really all I can do.

I’ve been stressing/freaking out so much over a midterm I’m taking this morning that my friend told me he’s “bringing plenty of backup” to breakfast so I don’t completely lose it before the exam.

{And by backup, I mean he’s saved an inordinate amount of cute photos on his phone for me to look at (he showed me one yesterday)}.

Personal Life Update:

It’s taken me quite some time, but yesterday was the first day all semester that I felt like myself. I woke up in a good mood, I was incredibly focused during all of my classes, managed to get a large assignment, a quiz, and test corrections done for my Chemistry 101 class. I also cleaned up my dorm room and went to a hockey game with a friend.

I missed feeling happy, productive, and on top of things. The funny thing is, nothing amazing happened. It was just another day, but the first “normal” day I’ve had in a while. I’m hoping this is the beginning of the end of this yucky rough patch, but I just have to take it one day at a time.
