The Queen’s costume, from the Royal Ballet’s new production of Swan Lake, costume design by MacFarland. Picture from Olivia Cowley’s blog, Ballet Style.

One of the tutu-making groups I hang out in is going through a bunch of photos from this production and loving every second of it. We decided we like the subtle use of pearls on this one, though it could possibly have done with a bit more gold brocade or a bigger crown or something. XD

(To explain the joke: I’m certain this looks absolutely fabulous and appropriate when seen from the audience and in context. Not only does the whole production go to 11, it was also made to be filmed so there’s far more detail than is usual for stage productions. And the queen has to stand out even against a backdrop of over the top court gowns. Which all results in a costume that pushes visual symbols for royalty several notches further than anything I have seen before.)

People on the tutu forum were commenting that they’d hate to be responsible for the maintenance of those babies, but I can think of worse fates. I also particularly love the applique on her sleeves - the whole production is really spiky, so it ties her costume in with everyone else. Also what this picture doesn’t show is how much the whole thing GLITTERS. The entire production glitters, and the queen in particular looks like she’s been dunked in glue and rolled around in it. It’s AWESOME.

I just watched the second half of the show along with @sweepseven and had a ball. Hopefully there will be gif sets forthcoming! Rothbart is so utterly extra, it’s perfect. They could not have made a villain more suited to Sweep’s tastes if they’d tried. XD
