Mount Rose, February 2019
Things Iāve learned while working in a museum collection
-The best way to learn is on the job
-Snakes kept in ethanol for 50 years have a very specific smell
-itās like greasy vodka
-Iāve found where all the queers go in science and itās museums, Iāve found my people
-A right of passage includes getting a tattoo of your preferred genusĀ
-The 60 year old entomologist who is apparently a celebrity in the beetle circles has a huge back-spanning tattoo of a scarab, and my co-worker only discovered this when she saw said entomologist at a rock concert
-You have to keep those stained skeleton specimens in jars of glycerin because itās only in glycerin that light goes through the specimens tissue to reveal the blue/red/green skeleton otherwise theyāre an opaque white
-Glycerin leeches through glass
-You will be skinning an animal for a few hours and be staring at the bare flesh and viscera and be suddenly intensely hungry. Thatās normal.
-Youāll find aĀ āproblem specimenā in a jar with no number tag and youāll ask the collection manager what to do about it, sheāll turn around pick a book from a huge shelf of identical books and ask for the place and date on the jar and then sheāll flip to a page, check that, and then check the online database before sayingĀ āitās this one, make a new tagā. And youāll spend the rest of the day mystified at the incredible record-keeping thatās been happening for 130 years.
-Vegans havenāt discovered museum collections yet and everyone hopes it stays that way lest we have to constantly defend anotherĀ vital aspect of scientific progress
-Ā āOur collection isnāt haunted because animals donāt hold that kind of grudge, everything in the herpetology section murdered for their dinner everyday, but the anthropology collection on the other handā¦ā
-Everyone in the vertebrate collection has a furious and never-ending hatred of fly fishing (never forgive, never forget)
autistic traits that were ignored simply because Iām a girl:
very obvious special interests in things like animals or hair were ignored as normal girl interests
noise sensitivity was me being an uptight bitch
meltdowns extending into teenage years were seen as typical for dramatic teenage girls
love of colorful, sparkly, visually-stimulating things?? GIRL
vestibular stimming only landed me in cheerleading and gymnastics
severe social anxiety = shy girl!!!
always saying āwhatā? canāt be her ears bc she has great hearing, must just be another ditzy blonde girl
only eats specific foods/plain food? girls are sooo picky
self-harming? red flag but still typical of girls who are ālooking for attentionā
awkward laughing at everything because I donāt know what to FUCKING SAY?? giggly girl, very normal and cute (not)
doesnāt go out a lot? the perfect daughter!
not to mention all of the symptoms that WERENāT obvious because I worked so hard to hide them.
pls educate girls on autism so they donāt spend their formative years wondering why they feel so different.
Really important! Note that this could have impacted you even if youāre not a girl, especially if everyone expected you to be one as a child.
Weāve also seen an article that pointed out ways that girls & AFAB folks mask or are helped to mask their signs of autism. If anyone can track it down, weād be eternally grateful, and will update this post with a link as soon as we get it.

Dehumanizing criminals are a favored tactic among authoritarians.
A society that has already demonized criminals and are stripping them of rights need only criminalize political dissent for opposition to be practically impossible.
āTheyāre not sending their best, theyāre sending drug dealers, theyāre sending rapistsā¦ā -A Racist Piece of Shit Using This Exact Slimy Tactic
Soup
Hot hot soup
fuck if itās this easy why do they close the goddamn road for like five months shit
all outta soub :(
I work for the road crew in the summer. Crack sealing (the process you see above) is fairly quick and simple. (Though holding a hose that pumps literal tons of 350F tar into the road in the middle of the summer is NOT easy)
I think what a lot of people underestimate is just how much road there is in your city. And just how many directions the crew gets pulled.
For our city of around 50k people there are 8 of us.
Also, crack sealing is a wholly temporary measure, meant to slow the break-up of the roads, itās not a permanent fix.
Roads tend to get closed for months on end because we have to tear the whole thing up, then, depending on the class of road, we either have to hammer-drill into concrete to lay rebar and the pour concrete, or we can get straight to paving. If itās a road requiring concrete weāre required to wait at least 24 hours for it to set.
So after 2 days weāre finally able to pave. But the city allocates one (two if weāre lucky) 5 ton truck to transport material.
A relatively short paving job requires at a minimum of 60 tons. So thatās 12 trips to the asphalt factory and back. Each ton is around $80.
TL;DR
Thereās a lot of road, not many of us, and soup is expensive.
Leave the soup men alone.
Leave the soup men alone, and go vote for people who will pay for more soup and more soup people
Not to sound like a 90s shallow prep, but how you dress can affect your self esteem, and putting energy into wearing things you actively like and projecting an ideal of yourself through fashion instead of seeing clothes as things you have to put on out of obligation helps.
It also can give you a sense of control over your appearance that you otherwise wouldnāt have lmao
I bought a cape because of this
this post is written in a humorous tone but this is the realest shit.
two years ago i wore baggy sweatpants and flip flops every day because i was depressed but then decided eh to hell with it and bought some black edgy emo clothes bc thats how i always wanted to dress but never got a chance to and it was only then that i realized that the sweatpants flip flops look was just keeping me in my depression funk. i didnt like the way i looked and i didnt identify with the clothes i was wearing and it only made me feel worse.
i then went through my entire wardrobe and got rid of everything that made me feel that way.
now i have multiple outfit possibilities requiring different levels of effort but on days where putting on clothes just seems like a project i just have to put on black jeans and a band t-shirt and i can still feel good about the way i look which is a really good way to start off my day.
i can not recommend this approach to clothing enough.
#this is true and important#and also why i own FOUR capes#all clothing is costume#so dress for the part you want to play
There are already SO MANY slavery-free chocolate companies

OH SHIT
The work is part of yearlong process to prepare for whaling season.
āItās tedious,ā she says. āBut itās for the love of maktak, for the love of whaling, for the love of serving your community and for the love of our culture and families, for the love of our amiqtit family.ā ā Flora Atqaqsaaq Patkotak on the process of hand-making sealskin boats for whaling season
I brought this up to an old lady once and she said ābut itās a single person bathroom I donāt have to share it with other peopleā and I was like ⦠So are gender neutral bathroomsā¦.
Plane toilets are also gender neutral. I never thought about it until I went in after a bloke.
itās not the most efficient design, but a lot of people also like being able to have the option to use a private bathroom rather than having to share with other people.
Thereās a gender neutral bathroom on my campus thatās just like a normal public restroom. It has two stalls in it. People go in there all the time. Trans folks, people just using the restroom, mixed groups of friends that donāt wanna stop chatting just because their pal got ink all over her hands and has to wash. Iāve been in line in there with a cis looking woman and two cis looking guys at the same time and none of us started any fights or peeked under the stalls. No fires started. The world didnāt end. It never does. People always just do their business, wash their hands, use those stupid hand dryers, and then leave. Itās that restroom that eliminated any thoughts I had about gender neutral restrooms being a bad idea. Itās just a normal restroom. The stalls still mostly hide everything. The only difference is that now you might be washing your hands next to someone of a different gender and if you pee standing up you gotta follow two extra steps (opening the door to the stall and lifting the lid). And thatās it.
Thereās absolutely a place for single person restrooms but not all gender neutral restrooms are gonna be like that. And in practice the more public ones really are not a big deal.

i mean this in the nicest way possible you guys but you NEED to take better care of yourselves online. getting severely anxious about mass quantities of horrible things you cant change every single day is normal considering the internetās ability to educate on worldwide issues, it shows that you have empathy and that you truly do care. but relentless knowledge of constant suffering on this scale is NOT something humans are psychologically equipped to handle. itās okay to shut off. itās okay to just take a break and enjoy yourself for a whileĀ in your own localized space
When a comrade gets arrested
If youāre new to actions with an arrest risk and you donāt have experienced protestors with you, thereās stuff you can find online about having a legal team, writing the name of a lawyer on your body, saying NOTHING to the cops except the name of your lawyer, etc. Thatās all good advice.
But let me give you a bit of advice that is just as essential as all that:
If one of your comrades gets arrested, and you know they can be held for 6, 9, 12 hours, depending on where you are, you get a group of people together and you wait outside the police station.
You may be tired, you may be stressed, it may be freezing, you may need to take turns, but you take whoever can still physically and mentally bear it and you go to that police station and you wait for your comrade. You can spend the time taking care of each other, drinking hot drinks, doing whatever gets you through, but you wait.
And when your comrade gets out, you make sure they do not walk home alone in the dark thinking about the fucked up experience they just had, you make sure thereās a big fucking crowd of their comrades there to greet them with hugs and hot drinks and a cigarette if they smoke.
And whether the arrested comrade that just got out is happy or sad or pissed off, you take that for what it is and give that space and you support that. And you get them a hot meal and you hang out with them and you offer to let them stay at your place or you stay with them so they donāt have to spend that night alone with their thoughts.
You do this every damn time, regardless of whether you really like that comrade and regardless of how you feel about the thing your comrade got arrested for, regardless of how often theyāve been arrested. Because you never know how shitty their experience is going to be in there this time.Ā
Trust me. This is absolutely essential. Once youāve been arrested and have felt the difference between walking home alone or having your friends waiting for you, youāll understand.
Be good comrades
I canāt stress how important this is. When my father and I were arrested in Seattle some years back for agitating for Comprehensive Immigration Reform, we were greeted outside the jail by the eventās organisers. They cheered us, had cokes and munchies for us. They drove us to our car and, during the drive, asked if we wanted to stay the night in Seattle with one of the organisers, they filled us in on what had happened after our arrests, they asked about and listened intently to what we experienced from arrest to release. They did so much so well that when another call went out for potential arrestees, we were amongst the first to raise our proverbial hands.Ā Read the post. Re-read the post. Remember it. And, when the chance comes, do it.
When I was arrested at a Black Lives Matter protest a few years ago, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice were doing Jail Support when I was finally let out of One Police Plaza at around 6am.Ā
They had gotten a klezmer band to stand along the hill you have to go up to leave the jail, and as I walked to where the volunteer lawyers were waiting (they were there to make sure all 200+ people who were arrested that night would be represented at their later hearings. They also were surrounded by volunteers who had food, phone chargers, directions to all the nearby subway stops, and one of them let me borrow her phone to call my mom when I got frustrated with how slowly my phone was charging) the band played music, cheered and applauded.Ā
Honestly? That band playing klezmer for me as I left jail, cheering me on and making me laugh⦠itās a memory I really treasure.Ā
Itās also one of my motherās favorite stories. Before I told her about that band, she got so upset and agitated whenever anything reminded her of my arrest. Sheād freak out, cry, start fussing over me, and so forth. After I told her about the klezmer band though? It became something sheād tell her friends about, over and over again, laughing each time. She stopped calling me to beg me not to go and protest every time she knew a big one was happening, and instead would call to make a joke about how if I want to listen to klezmer she has some CDs I can borrow.
When I think about that night, rather than any of the many many terrible things that happened from the moment the cops grabbed me onward, the first thing I remember is the klezmer, and how it made me laugh, and the popcorn someone gave me as I gave the lawyers my name and info, and the kindness of strangers.
After the dehumanization of even a few hours in police custody, those volunteers made me smile, and gave the night a new fun and funny angle to be remembered from. I actually laugh when I think about that night, thanks to them.
Jail Support is a beyond vital part of protesting. It really really is.Ā
