“I very proudly entered the forestry school as an 18-year-old and telling them that the reason that I wanted to study botany was because I wanted to know why asters and goldenrod looked so beautiful together. These are these amazing displays of this bright, chrome yellow and deep purple of New England aster, and they look stunning together. And the two plants so often intermingle rather than living apart from one another, and I wanted to know why that was. I thought that surely in the order and the harmony of the universe, there would be an explanation for why they looked so beautiful together. And I was told that that was not science, that if I was interested in beauty, I should go to art school. Which was really demoralizing as a freshman, but I came to understand that question wasn’t going to be answered by science, that science, as a way of knowing, explicitly sets aside our emotions, our aesthetic reactions to things. We have to analyze them as if they were just pure material, and not matter and spirit together. And, yes, as it turns out, there’s a very good biophysical explanation for why those plants grow together, so it’s a matter of aesthetics and it’s a matter of ecology. Those complimentary colors of purple and gold together, being opposites on the color wheel, they’re so vivid, they actually attract far more pollinators than if those two grew apart from one another. So each of those plants benefits by combining its beauty with the beauty of the other. And that’s a question that science can address, certainly, as well as artists. And I just think that “Why is the world so beautiful?” is a question that we all ought to be embracing.”
— Robin Wall Kimmerer, “The Intelligence of Plants”, from the podcast On Being with Krista Tippett
i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
yesterday on youtube I discovered the fascinating sport of World Chase Tag, which is a bunch of off-duty professional stuntpeople doing Tom & Jerry shit against other professional stuntpeople around an obstacle course that looks like an awesome playground made out of olympic gymnastics equipment and lawsuits. each team earns points based on how long their runner can manage to evade the other team's chaser, up to the full length of the 20 second round. people regularly beef it trying to jump onto/off of the obstacles. kinda amazing that no one has died doing this yet. the women in particular move like they're trying to kill each other. winners are crowned the "world chase tag world champions," despite the awful SEO of that name. I'm obsessed with it
I do think it's kind of funny when plot summaries are like "character A encounters the last person they expected...their ex." Idk about you guys I'd be less surprised if my new coworker/roommate/random dance partner was my ex than I would if it was, like, Megawati Sukarnoputri the first woman president of Indonesia.
Any of my exes could plausibly attend the same conference as me. But I'd be really surprised to encounter former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
Which of these would surprise you more to find on the doorstep?
Your ex
Megawati Sukarnoputri, the first woman president of Indonesia
This poll is ambiguous if you (a) Don't have an ex or (b) Are Egyptian diplomat Hassan Gamal Ahmad Hassan, whose marriage to Megawati Sukarnoputri was anulled in 1972.

the worst part about ocd and ocd-like tendencies is that you think hyper-analyzing your thoughts and constantly psychoanalyzing yourself will fix you but that's actually part of the disorder. it's the disorder. disordering.
man i just dont know why im so afraid all the time (<- has the disorder that makes you afraid all the time)
any time I tell my mutual about the fic i'm 'writing' and they ask me where they can read it
they killed him for this

It's an exclusive right of passage to play Morrowind and get hopelessly, wearily, and infuriatingly lost in Vivec
Saw a goofy Tumblr post today saying the brain was a 10/10 organ because it does not gurgle. So a few years ago I had my skull opened for surgery and found out right after that when they do this, you can't 100% stitch someone back up without air getting in, and given insides your head is full of liquid, I had air bubbles in there for months until the body eventually absorbed the gasses. It would sound like those ASMR bubble massage wands whenever I'd shake my head & yes you can physically feel the bubbles moving in there. All this to say you know what not all people walk the same path but that's a pretty good grade I agree
