Genuinely such a dumb cunt thing to say while still trying to get Star Trek money:
“I dislike social commentary. Like… I really hate it. When I’m reading a book, I just want to be entertained, not preached at by the author. Plus, it ruins the wonder of the story if I know the author has a political or social axe to grind. I no longer speculate about all possible outcomes of the story because I know for a fact that the universe of that book will conspire to ensure that the author’s political agenda is validated. I hate that,” Weir said. “I put no politics or social commentary into my stories at all. Anyone who thinks they see something like that is reading it in on their own. I have no point to make, and I’m not trying to affect the reader’s opinion on anything. My sole job is to entertain, and I stick to that.”
People are all over this post to say he’s left wing and just doesn’t know it because he does “humanist” stories and I regret to tell you he’s described himself as fiscally conservative.
And like all fiscally conservative dudes what he means is “the thing I like (in this case, science, NASA, aeronautics) should get all of the funding and international support while everyone else should get fucked.”
It’s the same reason why the existential threat of climate change in his book isn’t manmade but is rather out of humanity’s hands entirely. It’s why his hero is typically a white straight man and he he veers out that his characters veer on caricature. It’s why The Martian/PHM are nearly identical books: they’re just pitches for more grants to be given to the parts of science he cares about.
He wasn’t just talking about being apolitical with his more recent statements—I highlighted he was on an anti-woke podcast for a reason. He talked to the critical drinker as a consumer of his content, referencing his work, because he agrees with or at least sees no issue with the racist, misogynistic culture war stuff the critical drinker peddles for viewership.
His stories aren’t left wing… at best they are like… hopecore libertarian. Fund science, leave the rest behind. Cause science is capital.
Chapter thirteen is out and we are in the last segment of the story, so it's time for an explanation.
A. The internet has mostly cut its teeth on the inherent romance of Jessica Rabbit and Roger Rabbit. I wholeheartedly agree. "He makes me laugh," is a deeply compelling and succinct answer, especially from a character who claims she is doomed to her behaviors due to being "drawn that way." Jessica Rabbit is not Heinrix van Calox, though, unfortunately for him. If anything, Yrliet is Jessica Rabbit, also unfortunately for her. Heinrix van Calox is absolutely Eddie Valiant. Their names both bespoke a sort of death of chivalry and whimsy that is characteristic of the fantasy-noir they both partake in. And their lives are being upended by an all powerful clown.
B. Tithe and Ironside are about a girl from New Jersey who discovers she's a green magical creature. Utilizing the power of malicious compliance, trickery, and her knight boyfriend who is sexually harassed by his superiors, Kaye is able to upend major fey politics and also get away with incorporating cheetah print into her wardrobe.
These books have their flaws and are very early 2000s, but I miss this sort of old style of YA fiction that made its lead character kind of a little freak about everything. They weren't worried about alienating a reader by not having an easy vehicle to insert oneself into. Also these two scenes very much inform how I write Fester and Warp Dread:
C. This Cunk on Earth bit is every Heinrix van Calox character quest/mission debriefing before you then go to the planet where they eat babies.
D. Fun Fact: did you know that Otacone and Solid Snake raise a kid together? The hit game franchise Metal Gear Solid where the military is cool, but also sucks--but is also cool, but also sucks--has these two raising a kid together. Just food for thought.
E. Whoever wrote the The King of Attolia blurb on Wikipedia gets exactly what I am going for in my Rogue Trader fanfic:
Eugenides is a former Thief of Eddis who loses his hand but marries the Queen of Attolia, uniting the two previously warring countries and bringing peace to his kingdom. He then assumes the role of king. He appears to sleep during important briefings, makes casual remarks, wears unusual clothing, and refuses to be more than a figurehead, allowing the Queen to continue ruling as she has always done. The Attolian court views him as a young foreigner who seems ineffectual and foolish.
The narrative is largely from the perspective of Costis, a young soldier in the Queen's Guard. After the king insults Teleus, Captain of the Guard, Costis reacts impulsively and knocks the king down. Expecting to be executed, he is surprised when the king spares his life and makes him a reluctant confidant. Initially finding the king obnoxious and conniving, Costis gradually develops sympathy for him, recognizing him as a young man far from his home in Eddis, married to the formidable Queen.
F. I struggle with recommending Fire Punch to people on account of its content warnings being long enough to fill a nutritions fact box, but it's become a sort of touchstone of story telling for me in many ways. In particular this conversation with characters Agni and Togata, where even after so much has happened in their relationship, Togata lapses back into utilizing film references as a means of communication.
While the usage of Star Wars' opening crawl is on account that Agni doesn't know the film being referenced and Togata is one of the few who remembers the world pre-apocalypse, the utilization of a story about a plucky farm boy in space who watches his family burned to death by an evil empire so he pivots towards following a benevolent religio, is one that feels increasingly out of place in the grim darkness and weight of the world that is Fire Punch. But it's really touching in the same way it's deeply funny to me.
G. Mulder and Scully have become modern mascot archetypes in the same way that Jessica Rabbit and Roger Rabbit are for "good straight couples" which is one of those very fun and alienating statements for anyone who feels even a little bit weird about their gender or is bisexual. c'est la vie. Mulder is Fester and Heinrix is Scully.I also like that magazine cover image of the two of them partially naked in the morgue and on shiny medical tables. There. Now we can go home.
