I started reading this because people keep telling me I have a lot in common with Natsuo, but the comparison looks surface level to me at best. She's got this drive to take down a target, and that I can relate to, but her motivations are totally different. Her dark feelings don't seem to come from any perceived inadequacy compared to her target, in fact she's constantly presented as being uniquely talented. Instead, she seems to resent Yuzuko just for... being happy. Natsuo has a shitty home life and often feels unfulfilled, and she sees Yuzuko being happy, and just developed a grudge about it, I guess. It's a shallow motivation, and it doesn't really give the plot much to work with. I'm jealous of my target because she is more talented than me, because she has an easier time developing this specific skill, and because losing to her made me feel humiliated. Like Natsuo, I express those motivations through anger and obsession, but it's fundamentally different. The longer I read, the more I feel that the comparison was careless and superficial, and rather insulting.
no cook. I'm agreeing
