Obstetrix (Naomi Kritzer, narrated by Jennifer Pickens, 2026): Reading anything by Naomi Kritzer dislodges memories that were stuck somewhere unprocessed in one piece, and gently carries them down the mind-stream. (Jennifer Pickens does an amazing job narrating this one).
Pagans (James Alistair Henry, 2025): Mr Henry says in interviews, oh, this is just my little pandemic project, oh you know alternative history means you can make things up, tee-hee. Then has a reading list of history books at the back of the novel, another reading list of alternative history fiction (from which I currently have only read Temeraire), and a thanks to his wife, a historian, who he bothered with many a question. The novel has a setup I really enjoy (see: Deadloch) i.e. two detectives from different backgrounds solve a crime in a setting which is itself a character. True to Mr Henry's day job as a screenwriter, there are multiple ridiculous hacking scenes.
Feline abdominal ultrasonography: what's normal? what's abnormal? (Sally Griffin, 2019-2021). This is a series of articles available for free here, one for each abdominal site. When at the vet, it greatly helped me knowing the, to use video game parlance, dialogue tree upfront, otherwise I would spend most of the appointment processing words I was hearing for the first time. I also found that my intuition often under-reacted and over-reacted which resulted in bad decisions and inadequate questions, and I found I could fix that by being aware of the typical "normal" and the typical "not normal" upfront. I found these articles well written and helpful to do this prep for a feline ultrasound appointment. The more technical stuff not useful for the layman pet owner was easy to skip.
Rebecca (Daphne du Maurier, 1938, narrated by Alexandra O'Karma, 1988): I feel very fortunate that it's the Alexandra O'Karma recording that my library had. And: by the time the hold came through, I forgot completely what my original reason for borrowing it was, started listening, decided to continue listening "blind", and that turned out to be the best decision for this book. I now have a very strongly held opinion regarding the usual pitch for Rebecca [1].

[1] I did recall towards the end that, ah, the pitch must have been "gothic novel", "obsessive lesbian undertones", something like that, and I maintain that if you don't read it primarily as a gothic novel, it is an excellent interior portrait of somebody who does not intend to grow up, who is forever (until old age !!) stuck in that place that, as born/socialised girls, we linger in but ultimately pass through in our teens or twenties. And shyness/timidness has nothing to do with that, plenty of shy/timid characters in literature who are being/developing into their own person internally.

It may seem random but it’s actually not! We get a new prime minister after the previous one enters a protective chrysalis after a period of relentless eating and growing, and they then dissolve into a biological soup. They then reform into the new adult prime minister. It really beautiful to see 🥰
ive invented (note: dubious claim) something i call the bear diet which is mostly fruits and vegetables with fish as the main protein source and something like once a month you eat a few hyperprocessed foods of your liking because that is when you, the bear, raid a dumpster in the suburbs

I love this opening chapter so much. It has such a sense of their relationship to the world, to themselves, and each other. (And it's their friendship where the story starts).
