Fandom Problem #11,618:
Unpopular opinion: "redemption through love" is fine (on paper) when it's between a male hero and a very evil female antagonist, and doesn't deserve so much hate for the idea alone.
Men are allowed to have their own fantasies of "saving the villain" as much as women have their own in fiction. Viewing the former as gross and the latter as "empowering" is ridiculous.
(It's almost as ridiculous as hating the cliché in general, as opposed to how it's written)
GO OFF BESTIE

well the last statement is clearly untrue!
drives me crazy how normalized it is to idolize the muslim brotherhood. finding out someone spends their time online stanning the houthis should be as cringe as finding out they run a fanblog for the columbine shooters. it should be social suicide to openly admire terrorists like that
Dang, looks like I saw this post too late and the cowards over at the ALA have already disabled replies and quote-reposts.
... Oh well, I'll just share my sentiments here!
Is the thought-process behind this list, spotlighting more cozy, wholesome Romantasy for people not wanting so much kink and hardcore smut, a viable endeavor? Yes, of course!
Is the wording that they used ('ethical', 'ick', 'mature grounded', 'modern sensibilities') particularly tone-deaf not only because of the current hellscape that sees anything more transgressive than an M/F story where the guy is a little bit grumpy censored or denied proper industry representation but also because this is LITERALLY FROM THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION saying this?
Yes. Entirely so. I am glad that the comments and quote-reposts were full of people pointing that out before the ALA shut the post down.
I'm side eyeing this so hard.
Reading used to be a "nerdy" hobby. How it feels like I'm constantly being talked down to

the thing about Tangled is that this is a story geared towards little girls (even if it's "fun for the whole family," it's a disney princess movie, it's geared towards little girls), and it says, "here is a girl who is naive and doesn't know anything about the 'Real World' or how to navigate it safely and correctly. now pay close attention: the good guys are the ones who help her grow and explore new things while still respecting her own perspective and feelings, not making her feel stupid. the bad guys are the ones who tell her that she is too weak/immature/naive to do the things she wants to do, because she is fragile and needs protecting." and I watched this when I was nine years old and it resonated deep in a part of me that I couldn't articulate with words yet.
like, I was nine years old. other notable memories from being nine years old include adults making jokes about how easily squished fairies could be when I tried to explain my love of tiny fairies living tiny lives, and adults talking over my head about how I was "still so innocent" when I asked a question about what something was. a movie saying "hey even if you're naive and innocent you're still important and you have ideas that are worth something and people who treat you otherwise are holding you back" was such an important thing. idk
(popular leftist voice) these right wingers are so mad because they get no women. if you are a Good Person a woman will appear and suck your dick.
(popular leftist voice) these right wingers are all sooo poorrrr and stupid. They are stupid because they are poorrrr, racism would never exist in my suburban area
Popular leftist voice: these right wingers must have brain damage. They must be bigots because they are literally reta suffering from blsck mold, or brain damage.
Popular leftist voice: Every single right-wing person is literally so ugly and chopped, let me point out their exact features and how they're ugly. Having bad thoughts literally ages you. Good People are always hot and sexy and have kind countenances.
Popular leftist voice: These right-wingers are always so fat. This is because they are greedy, which as we know is a moral failing. Some of my Good People friends are fat but that is okay because of Body Positivity. But as soon as they become Bad People then they are Bad Fat and I will make fun of them for this.
popular leftist voice: these two male politicians are deeefinitely fucking. isn't it so gross when two men have sex? I bet one of them takes it in the ass because he's so submissive. this has nothing to do with real gay people btw; it's okay to make gayness into a joke if you're not talking about out gay people
>"this books has been banned in the US!!!!"
>looks inside
>just removed from a few high school libraries. Fully available in public libraries, book stores, and online.
the average person is unable to discern the difference between “banned” and “taken off required reading list in a single school district”

why are you not filipino
I'm not sure of the steps to take
"shipping and blorbofication are not inherently at odds with understanding a story's deep themes" and "some people can't grasp the themes of a story because they never learned how to engage with stories outside of the lens of shipping and blorbofication" are two statements that can coexist
blorbofication to me is when you love a character in such a laser focus way that you somewhat detach them from the narrative from which they are inserted and treat them in a way roughly similar to how you'd treat an oc for which you still have no story and just like to put them in situations just for fun. which there's nothing wrong with btw, it's just that it can easily lead to people forgetting the character engine in a narrative and not just a barbie doll
people like saying community when they mean demographic
And, back to the hot takes.
What are your hot takes regarding kinks and fetishes? And maybe some profic hot takes here and there ‘cause I know you’re profic.
Not all kink or fetish are created equal and the idea that you should never kinkshame someone has enabled a lot of people who have kinks and fetishes that are predatory or actively harmful. I see stuff like forcefem and feederism for example get a pass when the communities that engage in them have serious issues not practicing their kink ethically or have led directly to people being hospitalized and dying.
I love the profic crowd generally but I do think that they put a lot of emphasis on tagging everything possible on a fic but if an author chooses the most barebones tagging on their fic they are still tagging correctly and it’s still your responsibility to leave and not be an asshole to the author if you read something that upsets you. If an author tags just characters, fandom, chose not to use archive warnings, and nothing else that’s their right as an author.
What is the worst YouTube video you have ever seen? Without saying the username of the person who made the video, that is.
I don’t know if it’s the worst video essay I’ve ever watched but I remember a while ago I watched one where the guy was trying to explain why Americans were so fat but instead of blaming the obesogenic environment and ultraprocessed food industries he blamed fucking fitness influencers.
Or maybe that one that called Howard Ashman queer while actively discussing him and the role of the AIDs epidemic on the film industry.

I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with relating to characters, “they’re literally me” etc but if that’s the only way you engage with stories you’re kinda missing the whole point of Characters being vehicles through which we can see perspectives outside of our own. and also you’re going to get upset when the Character acts in a way that is not Personally Relatable to You
for real tho it feels exhausting that ive seen this whole "woman should be allowed to abstain from X beauty standard" -> "i perform X beauty standard, am i evil? do you think im evil? please forgive me i came up with a dozen excuses 🥺" since like 2015 (and i know its been going on longer than that) like girl thats not the poiiiiint
look me in the eyes. repeat after me. "i face societal pressure to perform this beauty standard. i should not face that pressure. i conform to this standard. i am rewarded for performing to this standard. i need to respect women who do not perform this standard. this is not about whether or not i am a sinner for wearing makeup."
