and i have been going insane about it ever since! kamome shirahama your attention to details will be the death of me /pos
hands are the most expressive non-verbal tool humans have, and since it's also quite literally the tool that gives the witches their magic, watching hands in witch hat atelier is beyond important. implied spoilers up to ch93 under cut! [don't mind the language of half the screenshots, that's beside the point]
qifrey so very often tends to clasp his hands together, rubbing them against each other or simply clinging to his long robes. a gesture so telling of just how uncomfortable due to silverwood he constantly is, always slightly nervous, always tip-toeing around the edge of a cliff.
and he's been doing so since childhood! his emotions are so closed-off when it comes to casual body language, which is both an indicator of his character and the ways in which he deals with his curse. unable to trust even his closest friend, he chooses the only vaguely soothing thing: to curl into himself, to detach, to distance.
meanwhile olruggio, despite his scruffiness, generally comes off as a more open, "simple" man, hands flying all over the place when he's agitated. he expresses his emotions freely, without restrain.
qifrey curls into a ball for comfort, meanwhile olly splays like a star, comfortable in his skin an in qifrey's presence
and what happens when they start to interact?
olly keeps reaching for qifrey, talking some sense into him with his hands, with spontaneous and emotional physical touch.
he does so even upon first meeting
he keeps and keeps reaching out to qifrey, both literally and symbolically.
no matter how hard qifrey tries to run away, to hide deeper into himself, olruggio will always be there to offer him a friendly hand or otherwise
this particular parallel is especially dear to me:
they changed so much,
but they also haven't changed at all
and the culmination of this dynamic in a single image for me is this:
qifrey, gaze averted, hands uncomfortably clasped together, fake smile on his face
and olruggio, calm and confident, leaning into qifrey's personal space with familiar ease, resting an arm on his shoulder in a friendly gesture.
everything that shirahama consistently portrays as the manga goes on and the history unravels, neatly and wordlessly shown in a single static image. the art of showing, but not telling, thus nurturing a deeper understanding of these characters. absolutely brilliant
if I think too hard about how qifrey's entire driving motive is to save his own life so he can be finally feel happy and safe in the home he made with the people he loves without bringing them anguish and that to anyone lacking the context of his past he seems to have some kind of twisted need for revenge that puts everyone he loves at risk i start to lose my fucking mind.
and like i truly cannot blame nolnoa or olruggio or tartah or anyone else for being like "ayo what the FUCK is this guy up to??" because his desperation does come across as corruption because of its raw intensity, and it's so easy to believe he's keeping secrets with nefarious intentions, but he's NOT. he's just trying so SO hard to claw back the freedom that was stripped away from him and he's all alone. and if he's not alone, if he shares the weight of the burden that was forced upon him, then guess what? he's fucking dead.
and now it's become even more urgent as his remaining vision starts to fail because if he can't be the one to find the answer he's been searching for, then he'll be stuck alone in that hell for the rest of his life.
Ok but Ilya not realizing until much later that he hurt Shane with things heād done in the past
One day it randomly comes up as Ilya says something about a time he acted like a dick and Shane is just like āEh itās ok, looking back I understand now that you were in a āIām going to hurt you before you can hurt meā mindset and thatās why you acted like that.ā
And Ilya is staring at him and Shane asks whatās wrong and Ilya goes āI hurt you?ā And Shaneās just like well yeah but it was forever ago donāt worry about it. But Ilya is worrying about it because back when heād done the various hurtful things heād been in downward spirals where he was convinced he didnāt have the ability to hurt Shane because he didnāt matter enough to Shane to hurt him, so he didnāt think the way he acted had any negative effects. And now heās turning pale and his eyes are getting big as heās realizing that oh god when he did those things he hurt his favorite person and he hadnāt even realized it
He makes Shane tell him the different times it happened and Shane doesnāt really want to because clearly this is just going to upset Ilya more, but hiding it or lying is probably also going to make things worse in the long run so itās better to get it out now. So he mentions Ilya ghosting him after they had sex, and then how Ilya acted in Sochi, and that whole night in Vegas, and āI like youā¦ Not as a person, obviouslyā
And the whole time Ilya is silently nodding and looking like he wants to throw up because no no no those werenāt supposed to be things that hurt Shane, those were supposed to be things that bounced off Shane without affecting him because they were only ever meant to hurt or protect himself, Shane was never supposed to have been hurt by those and fuck how did he not see in the moment the way that he was actively hurting Shane by doing that
And now itās even worse because Shane wonāt even be mad at him about it, he keeps insisting on being understanding and not upset and trying to make Ilya feel better when in fact Ilya is the worst most awful person in the world who should be punished for eternity for making 22 year old floppy haired baby Shane SAD like some kind of MONSTER
The next Galina session Shane is also there with Ilya who has his head in his hands and Shane is just like ok so we may have accidentally stepped on a landmine the other night-
