I find the concept of the bay leaf very helpful when I'm redrafting.

The bay leaf is something you have in your work - a scene, or a description, or a character that you're attached to - but eventually you realise you have to take it out. You think, 'I really love this scene, and I don't want to remove it, but I don't need it any more. It's not working.' That's fine. It served its purpose - it helped you get to this point, and now you can let it go. It's the bay leaf.

In general I find anything like that—apologizing on behalf of your race/gender/sexuality/etc—to be both pointlessly self-flagellistic and irritatingly useless. A president might apologize on behalf of a country, because they are a representative of that country's government, but these giant amorphous groups don't have those, it's just all tons of people.

More importantly, it doesn't actually solve anything, it doesn't put bread on the table or roofs over heads; just work at fixing the problem or at least not being a part of it. You don't need to do this weird shit! I (and I suspect most of the out group) just find it annoying!
