OCD Stereotypes to Avoid Writing (with Explanations!)
In writing, one of the easiest things to fall into when writing about a character with a disorder, disability, or group you aren't a part of is stereotypes.
They're easy to do by accident and sometimes we do it because we didn't know we were even playing into a stereotype.
So, I've accumulated a small list of stereotypes to avoid while writing your character with OCD 😊
OCD is a cleaning disorder.
OCD is not a cleaning disorder! It's a disorder that follows the cycle of:
Obsessions
Anxiety
Compulsions
Temporary relief
Repeat
The contents of the actions aren't what make OCD OCD; it's the thought process, cycle, ritualistic compulsions, anxiety, and obsessions that do.
There are many different subtypes of OCD, though not everyone has a subtype. Subtypes are not part of a diagnosis; they're more of what we use in the community and use to identify our reoccuring obsessions. A lot of people have subtypes, but some do not! A person 100% can have OCD and have no common theme or subtype.
OCD themes or subtypes are common themes a person's intrusive thoughts and obsessions have. Usually a theme is attached to something a person with OCD values, like being clean or being a good person, and then attacks it.
OCD is ego-dystonic, meaning that thoughts don't align with that person or their values. That's why they're intrusive; they cause distress and the person getting them does not want or agree with them.
A few examples of other OCD subtypes are:
Harm OCD
Magical thinking OCD
Postpartum OCD
Responsibility OCD
Sexuality OCD
And so so so many more (this is a very small list compared to all the subtypes there are!)
Looking into different subtypes can help you determine how your character's OCD shows up and can even be a great way to reflect on what matters to your character. Plus, you'll have a consistent theme to focus on.
If you don't want to write a subtype, then just make sure your character follows the cycle of OCD! Not everyone has a subtype.
As a note, writing a character who does clean as a compulsion is completely okay! However, contamination OCD is the most represented form of OCD and seeing other subtypes would be very nice and thoughtful!
OCD is an action disorder without internal workings.
OCD is not a disorder defined by actions alone. The thought process is where the actions stim from!
This partly goes along with the "OCD is not a cleaning disorder."
One of the reasons why OCD started to be labeled as a cleaning and perfectionism disorder was because people didn't see the person with OCD's thoughts and only saw their actions. They assumed OCD just means doing cleaning or perfectionism related actions that aren't caused by complex thoughts; this is incorrect.
The actions that people see are caused by intrusive thoughts and obsessions, and they're called compulsions, which take many forms (mental and physical).
Showing and representing those obsessions and intrusive thoughts is vital to writing OCD, not just including compulsions that happen for "no reason".
When writing a character with OCD, it's of the upmost importance to show their inner workings, thoughts, and show why they're doing something instead of just showing them performing an action without reason.
OCD is a tiring, complex, and mentally distressing disorder that is never just soley actions without thought.
Compulsions are only visible.
OCD compulsions are not always visible!
There are mental compulsions that are actually very common and a study even showed that 53% of compulsions are mental ones!
A few examples of mental compulsions include, but are not limited to:
Counting and repeating phrases in one's head
Arguing or trying to neutralize an intrusive thought
Reviewing memories or events in the past
Problem-solving repetitively
Punishing and berating oneself repetitively
Adding mental compulsions is a great way to make your character more realistic. Also, it's not enough to only have them do mental compulsions a few times; compulsions are repetitive and it's important to show them be re-occuring.
My character has OCD but it doesn't impact their life.
OCD always has at least a mild impact on a person's life if they have it!
Giving a character OCD but never bringing it up or showing it can come off as dismissive. Representation doesn't feel like representation when that disorder doesn't impact their life.
As a small caveat: Your character could have gone through therapy and recovered from mild-severe OCD, minimizing their symptoms, but even then, it would still have at least a small impact on their life or they'd have flare-ups!
It's not enough to say they have OCD; their struggle needs to be shown too!
End Notes

Just your annual heads up, Northern Ontario is actively on fire with little resources from the provincial government to combat them. Over 144 fires on record, you've seen the fire from Armstrong and another from Collins, but several First Nations along the corridor have lost their homes and have been displaced. Please keep them in mind this season as the fires have devastated their homes and displaced them, some were evacuated to Niagara where they face indiscriminate racism.
Please support some of the following (and please feel free to tag more)
Thunder Bay Community Pasture
Northern Reach Network
Both the Nokiiwin Tribal Council at 384 Fort William Road and the Superior Inn at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay are accepting donations for evacuees. They've posted that they're in dire need of baby and toddler supplies (especially diapers and formula) and cat and dog food and supplies. (X)
all yall make jokes about couples and their nonromantic third wheel having fun together, but im the one getting treated to food tonight by the couple im nonromantically third wheeling. you wish you were me
I'm sorry I read this as "necromantic third wheel" and went on a very rapid powerful imagination adventure. hello lovebirds I'm the skeleton here for breadsticks
'Why does every nonbinary person want top surgery' I dunno maybe because having visible breasts immediately makes everyone assume you're female and only female, and therefore put you into a binary. Also why are you assuming every nonbinary person has breasts.
I think people who believe that should also put some thought into whether every nonbinary person with breasts actually wants top surgery, or whether they've just decided that the nonbinary people with breasts who want to keep them don't "count" as nonbinary.
#i know plenty of nonbinary people who want breasts or like their breasts#but they're viewed as either transtrenders or trans women in denial <- prev tags
don't ever look up what your childhood friends are up to now!!!!!!!!!! like girl you're a nuclear safety engineer. i put on matching socks today. we played tag a thousand years ago.

genuinely and for real if you change your fundamental values because people are mean to you then you’re stupidddddd. “men are going to the right because leftists are mean to them” okay well they are stupid. “so and so became a terf bc trans people were mean to them” stupid behaviour. that was stupid of them. I don’t think “the left” is “failing” men. I think those men are stupid.
The recent hot VS cold polls have made me realise that a lot of people have no idea how to cool down.
As someone from a hot country that's regularly on fire, here's some tips:
WATER IS YOUR FRIEND! WATER! IS! YOUR! FRIEND! You can transfer SO much heat into this bad boy! You cannot cool down without water!
Wrists under the cold tap. Splash your face and the back of your neck. Fan yourself.
In some countries you can buy a little handeld fan with a water sprayer.
Damp tea towel around the neck. Stick an ice pack in there on hotter days.
Half fill a water bottle with water, stick in freezer. If you use a bottle with a straw, make sure it's lying on its side with the straw side up and out of the water. When frozen top up the rest of the way with tap water and off you go.
Desperate to cool off? Wet T-shirt. Sit in front of a fan. This will nuke it, just don't get hypothermia and don't fall asleep like this.
Cold showers are also your friend in summer. Some people get psyched up by these. Personally, I sleep like a baby, so I'm good to have them before bed. Just keep in mind that it takes a bit of time for the cool to circulate, so your body will tell you that you're colder than you actually are. I find that when I have cold showers I need to step out of the spray when I think I'm cold... I'll just wait, and thirty seconds later the temperature has evened out and I actually need to step under again. Rinse and repeat until you maintain coolness even after stepping out for a bit.
If you can't do cold showers, turn the cold shower on anyway and just stick your arms under. When they're cold, lift your arms up above your head. The sensation of cool blood draining into your body is fucking weird and kinda unpleasant but less unpleasant than being hot.
Feet in a tub of water with ice. Blood naturally flows to your extremities when hot, so take advantage of this. If you don't have a tub of ice water, sticking a wet rag on your feet in front of the fan works too, it's the less powerful version of the wet T-shirt.
Drinks lots of water but make sure that water has electrolytes as well. Stay in the shade.
Keep air circulating. Fans don't actually cool rooms down, they just help transfer heat from your body to the moisture on your skin or the air via evaporative cooling.
Block north facing windows early in the morning so the sun doesn't get in. If you're in the northern hemisphere, this is opposite for you. Keep in mind that if your home is brick, the bricks will still heat up and slowly release heat into your home even after the sun goes down so this will only do so much.
If it's hotter inside than outside, close all your windows but two, making sure they're on opposite sides of the house/unit you're in. Point a fan out of one window, making sure that the doors between the rooms with the open windows are all open. This will help create a mini pressure system in your home, pulling cooler air in and pushing the hotter air out via the fan. Bonus points if you can get that fan high up where the hot air rises; even within a single room the top is much hotter than the air by the floor. Adjust the amount of open windows based on how many fans you have, but generally you want more windows with fans open than windows without fans to keep the pressure correct.
Obviously, use your common sense for these. Not everything WILL work for you, just use the stuff that does and adjust what needs to be adjusted. Some of these will be impossible to use in the workplace but others you can still use. Others are best used at home. If humidity impacts your ability to use any of these, get a dehumidifier if that's an option, or use more ice instead of evaporation.
Also keep in mind that the skinnier you are, the faster these will work. More fat means more insulation, means more heat, so you may need to be more patient with some of these or use them in combination.
Or soak a baseball cap or other cloth hat that won’t be damaged by water.
Water needs energy to evaporate. As it dries, it consumes a little heat in its immediate vicinity.
Therefore any significant amount of water — buckets, wet towels, damp laundry— in a small room can cool it a degree or two, although this doesn’t work as well if the air is already humid.
This principle has been used since ancient times, from wet blankets hung over doors in ancient Egypt to the “swamp coolers” of the southern U.S. before modern AC, to modern “evaporative coolers.” And, of course, it’s the function of sweat.
