I am a chronic overthinker (what? The person with several mental illnesses and disorders overthinks? Say it ain’t so), so I can’t just leave it up to God to explain why Ryland has glasses in the Coltland (+Gentry) AU when his twin doesn’t.
So, my theories are as follows:
A. He was born premature, like a lot of twins. And Colt took up a lot of the nutrients in the womb, which affected Ryland’s eyesight.
B. Colt also needs glasses. He either got LASIK, wears contacts, or ignores it completely and just lives with being nearsighted he uses the excuse it’s for his job but mostly it’s because he’s stubborn. (Jody calls him old man when he squints at take out menu’s, but he’ll wear his glasses when he dies!!)
C. If it’s a Gentry AU: The night that Court shot their dad, he gave Ryland enough head trauma that it caused brain damage and messed up his vision. He probably still deals with migraines.
D. Ryland started wearing fake glasses in high school to differentiate himself from Colt. He got sick of being called Colt, and vice versa. It worked, but then he was stuck doing the bit forever and was too afraid someone would find out because that would be awkward. So now he lives with this secret slowly eating him alive every day until someone finds out. (Colt thinks this is hilarious and refuses to say anything because he wants to see how long it takes for Ryland to crack.)
So these are the excuses I use in my fics for why Ryland needs glasses. Be free to use them and if y’all have any other ideas would be happy to add to the pile.
