Hi! I had a question about book categorizations. What separates a YA fantasy book from an adult fantasy book? I would think it’s like, the topics, swear content, how graphic it is, but I’ve read some YA books that go really far on those fronts, so I’m not really sure.
The reason I ask is because I’m working on writing a fantasy book right now. I know it’s not for kids (contains swearing and graphic violence) but I don’t now what type of Not For Kids it is. Does it matter for my writing process? No. Am I anywhere near having a manuscript to send out where that information would be useful? Also no. Nonetheless, I would like to get a gauge on what separates the genres
The fantasy part is not the important part for what you are asking! This goes for all genre:
YA is about teenagers, told from the perspective of a teenager.**
That's really the main thing. Yes, YA tends to be quite "voicey" and "immediate", it's kind of a "you know it when you read it" type deal. But mostly it's ABOUT TEENAGERS.
Content-wise: YA can have sexual content and swear words and difficult content, if it is important to the story or character and not overly graphic. In other words, unlike a spicy romance novel, which might have random graphic sex scenes that are clearly there to titillate but aren't actually plot-forwarding or character-revealing (and there is nothing wrong with that in a spicy romance!) -- that wouldn't fly in YA.
A YA would be like, ok, we are teenagers, we have never had sex before, this "sex scene" will probably be somewhat awkward and not really "sexy" at all and involve a lot of conversation and character development and the Before and After of it all rather than getting into the mechanical details. A "closed door" if you will.
It's like, idk, think about U.S. movie ratings. In those terms, YA books are PG-13. Adult books are R. Spicy adult books might be NC-17.
If the book is about teenagers and from a teen perspective, it's YA. If it's YA, it should be at about a PG-13 in terms of content.
If the book is about adults, or about children or teenagers from an adult perspective, or about an adult looking back at their own childhood years with all the knowledge they have as an adult... it's a grownup book and can be more "mature" in terms of content.
