Iām doing my part spreading the word about this hidden gem of a TADC animatic. I canāt say Iām personally a huge Jax fan, but the music choice was on point, and the art style is gorgeous. I love the way they draw the characters, and the shot composition is absolutely peak. The fact that it only has 20 views right now is downright criminal.

Beta read by @a-small-creature (youāre the best!! š)
This is a subject Iāve been meaning to compile my thoughts on for a while now. There is a *lot* of commentary and opinions about Focalors, coming from many different sources. Itād be hard to find two people with exactly the same feelings about her. This is particularly striking given that she really only has about 20 minutes of screen time total, with her conversation with Neuvillette prior to her execution marking her first and last appearance in the game.
In particular Iād like to speak to the discourse initiated by @roseofthewind and @theshadechamber, to add on to and politely disagree with them (respectively).
I think the feature of Focolars that seems to be most discussed about her is her apparent apathy during her discussion with Neuvillette. People tend to get really hung up on the way that Focalors chooses to communicate her lore dump, even more so than the content of their discussion. This leads to the common misconception that Focalors is emotionally detached in general, and particularly with regards to Furina.
Canonically, the reason that Focalors comes off as so detached is because Furina is her human manifestation, whereas Focalors is merely the remains of her divinity. Fanon-wise, roseofthewind speculates that this is an extension of Furinaās overall autistic coding. Iām personally very attached to this headcanon, but even if we disregard it as not intentional by the writers, I think there is a lot of *in universe* evidence provided by her discussion with Neuvillette that we cannot use Focalorsā tone as an indicator of her intent.
Focalors does not modify her tone through out her conversation with Neuvillette, even when describing very grim subjects like Furinaās suffering and her own imminent execution. People have extrapolated from this that Focalorās seemingly blithe tone indicated that she didnāt care about Furinaās suffering, and only saw her as a puppet to enact her plans with no regard to Furinaās own feeling or autonomy.
In her conversation with Neuvillette, Focalors *explicitly debunks* the notion that she is apathetic either to her own demise or Furinaās suffering. She says, āAlthough I do not sound it, faced with death I find myself a little afraidā. This line is utilized to indicate to the viewer that you should not be using Focalorās tone to indicate how she is feeling. Nothing about Focalorās demeanor indicates this internal fear that she expresses, and sheās aware of that disconnect between how sheās feeling and what sheās emoting.
Letās start with the infamous scene pointed to by all Focalors-haters, possibly the one that was the basis for The Shade Chamberās negative opinion of Focalors in general, and very explicitly discussed as a huge sticking point for several YouTube commentators on this cutscene. Focalors, seemingly almost mockingly, declares that she cursed Furina right after waxing poetic about how much Furina meant to her. This line is very frequently taken out of context as an indication of Focalorsā cold or indifferent attitude towards Furinaās suffering. But people tend to forget a lot of context surrounding it.
Firstly, Furina is a manifestation of Focalors. Focalors is probably engaging in a little gallowās humor about her own dark, messed up situation to alleviate the tension with Neuvillette. She engages in this tactic multiple times in their discussion when Neuvillette seems distressed by their conversation, alternating between being blandly factual and dry, slightly self-deprecating humor. She even uses this technique when heās distressed about her imminent death, clarifying that she never saw her work as just culminating in her death, that rather sheās proud of the success of her plan and he should be celebrating the return of his powers, not moping about her fate. The part of the conversation about cursing Furina was not an isolated incident, and in this context itās clear that she isnāt belittling Furinaās pain but rather cracking a dark joke at her own expense, contrasting how much she loves Furina with being situationally forced to hurt her for the fulfillment of her plans.
If that intent wasnāt clear on its own or was misunderstood by her tone, she goes on to clarify what she meant a little later in the conversation, when Neuvillette remarks on Furinaās resiliency in the face of pressure that a human psyche wasnāt made to withstand. Focolars goes on to agree with Neuvillette and praise Furinaās dedication to the ruse, adding, āEven though Furina is technically a manifestation of myself, I definitely owe her an apologyā. This indicates that she is cognizant of Furinaās pain and regrets that Furina had to unduly suffer in the culmination of her plans to save Fontaine.
But then this brings up the question: if she really did care about Furina, why did she leave her in the dark about the full context of the plan? Neuvillette asks her this point blank, and she gives a vague answer, saying that to fool the heavenly principles you must first fool yourself. I think itās fair to say this answer is inadequate, but it opens the door to a lot of speculation about why withholding information from Furina was necessary.
I think the simplest explanation is that, in order for the prophecy to be fulfilled, Furina needed to buy into her own role as much as possible. Itās important to remember that while most of the characters focus almost exclusively on the final slate of the prophecy, wherein the hydro archon is weeping on her throne, the immediately preceding tablet predicts Furina being outted as a fraud in front of the people. If Furina went into this knowing sheād be outed at some point regardless, I think that would dramatically decrease her dedication to the ruse, because she would just assume that was all part of the plan anyway. The Shade Chamber accused Focalors of intentionally setting Furina up to fail by withholding information like this, and while I think itās true that Focalors did deliberately set Furina up to fail at *maintaining the ruse*, from her perspective that was inseparable with setting her up to *succeed* at playing her part to ultimately save Fontaine. Additionally, Focalors deliberately withholding her identity from Furina and referring to herself as āMirror-Meā implies some concern that the heavenly principles might be monitoring their conversation, or that she needed a failsafe in case Furina was unable to keep up the charade. If Furina knows as little as possible, thatās fewer aspects of the plan that could get leaked.
However, why Focalors withheld the information she did is largely speculative. But with the information she *did* provide Furina, I think it is inaccurate to suggest that Focalors unduly manipulated Furina into going along her with plan. Focalorsā plan depended on Furinaās voluntary buy in, and while she certainly didnāt reveal all of the details of her plan upfront, she was very clear that Furina would suffer if she chose this path. While Focalors was relying on Furina agreeing, she laid out all the facts to ensure that it was Furinaās decision to participate.
If we are somehow arguing that Furina was just ignorantly manipulated into doing this against her will, we are removing Furinaās agency and the heroism from her choice, casting her as a hapless victim of Focalorsā machinations, which I believe fundamentally undermines the point of Furinaās character arc. Yes, she was in a position where she was the only one who could save Fontaine and that puts some moral pressure on her (āwhy do I have to be the one to suffer?ā) but crucially she *chooses* to embrace this plan, saying that in comparison to the lives of the people of Fontaine her own pain was a small price to pay. Arguing that she was tricked, deceived, or manipulated into going along with this denies the truth that she chose to do this for the greater good. And as for Focalors perspective, regardless of whether you agree with her judgement call on this, she believed that she was providing as much information as she could without jeopardizing her plan. In no way was she withholding information for the purpose of exacerbating Furinaās pain or because she was apathetic to Furinaās suffering.
Overall, I think Focalors is a complex character. You definitely donāt have to agree with all her choices or say sheās some perfect angel. She did use Furina and Neuvillette as facets of her plan and deprived them of information. She made a tough, and morally gray, choice that the ends justified the means. But I think that the actual complexity of her character is overshadowed by getting hung up on her tone in most of the discussions surrounding her actions and motives.
Itās important to remember that Focalors did all of this to save all of the innocent citizens of Fontaine, and to right the ancient wrong of the Heavenly Principles stealing Neuvilletteās birthright. While many archon characters have expressed wariness about the motives of the heavenly principles, Focalors is the only character who actually took action in direct defiance of an unjust order sent down from the heavens. *Even Nahida*, the least morally gray of the all the archons, expressed regret for the wrongs that were done to Apep but expressed no interest in fixing them. While you could argue (probably correctly) that Apep would misuse their power, remember that the only reason Neuvillette was sympathetic to the people of Fontaine and acted as a just leader when his powers were restored was because Focalors deliberately set him up to have hundreds of years to warm up to people before she gave him back his powers.
Iām not saying anyone needs to love Focalors. But I just want to point out that there is a ton of evidence, based on what Focalors explicitly says are her motives, that she is far from apathetic about the suffering of Furina or anyone else. If the discourse is only focused on her tone, it obscures the content of her discussion and her actual feelings.
I think people who consider aromanticism as "basically straight" underestimate how noticeable absence can be to those around you.
Whether you're a kid in school with classmates who won't take "no one" as an answer to who you have a crush on or an adult whose coworkers have picked up on the fact that you've never mentioned a romantic partner; after enough time, a lack or insufficient amount of romantic interest will raise the antennae of friends, family, coworkers, etc... They will notice and they will speculate and they will ask.
It is impossible to meet the societal bar for straightness through inaction.
Seriously, most people donāt realize just how much of their lives revolve around romantic and or sexual relationships. Iām ace and somewhere in the aromantic spectrum, and I cannot explain just how much of socializing revolves around romance or situationships of some sort. Iāve grown distant with many friends over the yrs just because their entire lives revolved around dating and their significant others, and ended up having nothing in common.
My family, close coworkers -anyone who doesnāt know Iām ace- makes offhand comments about me being single, they speculate about it. Because in their minds, a 30yr old woman cannot be single by choice, there must be something wrong with me. Maybe Iām secretly gay, or traumatized, or in a secret relationship with a married man. Most people cannot comprehend that Iām happy the way I am, or that my life is complete and fulfilling to me.
I think the thing that people donāt recognize with aromanticism is that when you come out to your acquaintances and coworkers because your identity comes up in casual conversation, theyāll often say things that would be absolutely recognized as homophobic if they said that to their friend coming out as gay but they think is perfectly fine to say to an aromantic person. Iāve had the gamut, āitās just a phaseā, āyouāre too young to knowā (Iām a college student btw, Iām old enough to drink and enlist in the military but not old enough to know my sexuality?), āIām sorry that youāll never have a normal lifeā, etc etc.
And these people legitimately believe that theyāre trying to be supportive saying this stuff, because they see me coming out, unconsciously, as some sort of guilty admission that needs to be downplayed to make me feel ānormalā. The reason I harp on comparing that to someone coming out as gay is because if any one of those talking points came out in that circumstance, it would be socially acceptable to call out that behavior as homophobic because itās so obviously degrading and intended as a diminution and an insult. But for ace people, I donāt want to lay into my co-workers because they mean well but donāt know any better. So I canāt just ask for their support, I have to decide whether itās better to educate them or just move past it.
A lot of people donāt know how to recognize high-masking autism because its presentation challenges many stereotypes about what autistic people are like, but Furina continues to be a perfect example of it.
It should go without saying, but I love Furina as a character and this analysis is in no way putting her down. Autism is an entirely neutral trait that carries through to adulthood, and if you have a strong negative reaction to the idea of a character you like being autistic, you have probably absorbed a lot of misconceptions about autism and have some unconscious prejudice to unpack.
In the paragraphs that follow, I am going to explain several autistic traits and give examples of how Furina displays each trait.
*thinking face on*
1. Autism is, at its core, a difference in the way the brain takes in, processes, and shares information. This can make it challenging to communicate with other people who donāt share this neurotype, but a high-masking autistic person has observed the way other people interact and spent years copying them, figuring out through trial and error how to act to best fit in and get the most positive responses from other people.
Furinaās ascension speech in Act V of the Fontaine Archon Quest, where she first presents herself to the people of Fontaine, is a great example of this observation of others with the goal of masking as well as possible. Furina initially gives the speech as comes naturally to her in a very straightforward and honest manner (also an autistic trait!). After the speech, she realizes that her citizens are responding with hostility to her humility and lack of authoritarianism, so she then plays off the original speech as a ruse and immediately redoes the entire thing more assertively according to the feedback she picked up on.
(Calm down, Furina⦠Think. Think. What do the people want? How would they imagine a god to speak and act?)
Fontaine AQ Act V, Chinese audio: (link starts video at 3:10:07) https://youtu.be/T-AbXi5bufk?si=eQADAWw6n8Sk0PZE&t=11407
This is the kind of social trial and error that many autistic people do over the course of years so that eventually we can say the āright thingā the first time around, and itās a testimony to Furinaās skills as an actor that she course-corrects so quickly.
Because of all the constant mental calculations, social situations are usually very tiring for autistic people, even when the social event lines up with their interests. In Clorindeās Story Quest, Furina has no interest in Naviaās suggestion of pulling an all-nighter to keep playing D&D (I mean, Tabletop Troupe!) and wants to go home and rest.
Furina: Huh!? Oh, um⦠Iām not sure Iāll have enough energy for thatā¦
Furina has shown other signs of needing to take a break from socializingā for instance, in Lynetteās hangout event quest, Lynette gets tired of all the people at her post-performance reception and goes upstairs to a quieter room to find Furina already there.
Furina offers to give Lynette tips on the best ways to slip away from an event, and Lynette misunderstands at first and isnāt interested in Furinaās advice because she thinks Furina loves everything about the spotlight and doesnāt realize how much they have in common. This goes a long way to show just how well Furina masks her autistic traits!
Furina: I see youāve escaped the crowds to seek refuge on the second floor. Fame can be overwhelming at first, canāt it? Perhaps youād benefit from hearing about the experiences of a veteran celebrity such as myself?
Lynette: No thanks, Iām good. Pretty sure thisāll be my first and last time in this situationā¦
Furina: Hey, at least let me finish! I have top tips on dealing with belligerent reporters, slipping away to hunt down snacks during the intermissionā¦
Lynette: ā¦Tell me everything.
Conversely, when alone, Furina will stay up late reading or doing something else that interests her and will not feel the same need to stop and rest, because when alone, there is no need to expend extra energy worrying about socializing properly.
At the beginning of the Fontinalia Film Festival limited event story, Traveler and Paimon go to Furinaās apartment and she answers the door sounding a bit groggy.
Paimon: Did you just get up, Furina? Itās already past noon, you knowā¦
After Traveler chastises Paimon for being rude, Paimon panics and says something nonsensical about how the weather is so nice in the afternoon and sleeping in is fine, actually, and Furina responds that sheās just a bit tired because she was up late reading:
Furina: I was just up late last night reading some novelsā¦
When focused on an interest, itās very easy for an autistic person to lose track of time and it can be difficult to break out of the focused state and go to bed. (This is a trait that overlaps significantly with ADHD.)
2. Alexithymia is a difficulty with identifying, processing, and expressing your own emotions, and in extreme cases presents as an almost total lack of emotion. Some degree of alexithymia is common in autistic people.
I believe, in the flashback scene below from Act V of the Fontaine Archon Quest, that Furina genuinely did not realize she was upset and did not realize she was crying, which could be explained by alexithymia.
Fontainian citizen: Are⦠are you crying?
(If you played this part with the English voice acting and interpreted it differently, try listening to it in Chinese- Furinaās voice sounds completely confident and in control the entire time, and itās not until the other person points out sheās crying that Furina sounds at all upset.)
Fontaine AQ Act V, Chinese audio: (link starts video at 3:22:00) https://youtu.be/T-AbXi5bufk?si=fl8xSwkQ0rRLFPQU&t=12121
I am a believer that Furina and Focalors were originally the same person, and Focalors is just Furinaās divinity and pre-archonhood memoriesā so if Furina is autistic, Focalors is autistic.
While talking to Neuvillette, Focalors is extremely matter-of-fact with her explanation of her plan, very matter-of-fact about the suffering of her own human self, and very matter-of-fact about her own impending death. There is no show of emotionā she just tells Neuvillette the facts. This could be related to alexithymia, but regardless it is a very autistic way of communicating that is often misinterpreted as cold and uncaring. In actuality, someone who is willing to sacrifice their own immortality, divine power, and freedom to save other peopleās lives cares a great deal, even if the tone of their voice doesnāt reflect it!
Focalors: I mean, did you think I would be the sort to enjoy peaceful repose while Furina suffered?
3. The autistic nervous system takes in a lot of information that a neurotypical personās would filter out as not being important enough to bother with- this is why autistic people are so much more sensitive to sounds, lights, textures, and any changes in the environment. Too much sensory input can actually feel painful.
There is a documented instance of the Opera Epiclese becoming so loud that Furina was overstimulated enough to yell at everyone to be quiet.
Furthermore, post-Archon Quest, after moving out of the Palais Mermonia and into her own apartment, Furina eats primarily macaroni for an unspecified amount of timeā weeks or months on end. After a huge life change, itās common for an autistic person to want anything they can control to be the same, so their brain has more space to process everything thatās different.
There is no neurotypical explanation for eating the same food over and over to the exclusion of everything else. It makes no sense to someone who doesnāt experience overstimulation and distress at too much change. Case in point, during Furinaās Story Quest, Traveler and Paimon are rather baffled:
Traveler: ā¦Donāt you get sick of macaroni every day?
Furina: Not at all. As long as you have different kinds of sauces in, you can have macaroni and tomato sauce one week, macaroni and bolognese the nextā¦
Notice that Furina says āmacaroni and tomato sauce one week,ā implying that sheās fine with just that sauce for an entire week, and then uses a different sauce for the next entire week. Still not very much variety!
Paimon: Oh, sounds like youāre really struggling to copeā¦
Traveler: Is it because you have to do all your own cooking now?
Yes, Furina is struggling to cope, but not because sheās incapable of learning how to cook more complex dishes! Sheās just too burnt out to want to make or eat a variety of things right now. Furina explains this and Paimon doesnāt believe her, but since we know that Furinaās special dish is an even more extravagant version of La Lettre a Focalors, if Furina is capable of baking at that level, she would certainly be capable of cooking.
4. Stimming, or self-stimulatory behaviors, are repetitive actions that serve to regulate or soothe the nervous system. There are countless behaviors that can be used as stims, but some common ones are rocking back and forth, hand flapping or waving, leg bouncing, skin picking or scratching, rubbing or squeezing a comforting object, dancing, spinning in circles, humming or vocalizing, or listening to the same song on repeat for hours. (Itās worth noting that stimming is not exclusive to autismā especially when stressed neurotypical people do some of these things too. Stimming can also be commonly exhibited by people with ADHD who arenāt autistic, although there are also a significant number of people with both ADHD and autism.)
One of Furinaās idle animations and also her normal attack sequence include behaviors that can be interpreted as stimming. Furinaās idle animation with Surintendante Chevalmarin involves her holding the seahorse up, waving her around, squeezing her tightly and rubbing her face on her head. Chevalmarin is made entirely of water and loves Furina dearly, and so does not mind being cuddled like a stuffed animal.
If you use all four of Furinaās normal attacks, she spins around several times and the final attack culminates with her spinning on a bubble and swinging her sword for AOE. If you use just three of Furinaās normal attacks and do not append any additional actions, Furina spins around again before plunging the tip of her sword into the ground (I do not have a gif of this). Furina also spins around when added to your 4-character party. Thatās a lot of spinning, which certainly makes it seem like a preferred stim!
5. I got this far without mentioning special interests because I have so much other evidence that I hardly need to bring it upā but since itās a much more commonly recognized autistic trait than many of the things I discussed at the beginning, I will include this part of Furinaās teapot dialogue, which does indicate that Furina engages in special interests:
Furina pretty much defines āspecial interestā with the above statement: itās something that youāre interested in (to the point that it may feel like an obsession) and you have to know everything about it!
These are just a few examples of autistic traits that Furina exhibitsā there are absolutely more. Furina is shown many times to have a high level of near constant anxiety despite being someone who is confident enough to perform on stage. This anxiety could come from other sources, like c-PTSD, but itās very common for a high-masking autistic person to have chronic anxiety from being hyper-aware of avoiding potential social blunders, repressing stimming to appear more ānormal,ā and dealing with the increased risk of overstimulation that comes with repressing stimming.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Even if you donāt agree with my interpretation of the character, I do genuinely hope you learned something about autism.

you know how people say that cats and dogs donāt feel love the way humans do but itās like. āoh they donāt love you they just associate you with warmth and safety and seek out your company and being near you and spending time with you makes them feel comfortable and secureā bro if thatās not love then what the FUCK do you think love is???
Itās also just bullshit in general. The Human - Animal bond has been studied extensively and results in similar biological responses across animal groups and humans.
Not only do your dogs and cats love you, but your parrots love you. Your mice love you. Your lizards love you. Your ants love you. Your spider loves you.
Turns out bonding is just something we animals (humans included, bc weāre not fundamentally different from other animals as such statements op is referring to imply) like to do when we can afford to do it.
This is the #1 thing that people ask or say when they learn I have a tortoise- "oh, but does he actually love you?"
Look buddy. Maybe you have some specific definition of love that'll exclude anything other than human, or mammalian love.
But he recognizes me specifically, and when he sees me, he scoots his shelled butt out of his hut and cranes his neck up for little head scratches and maybe a dandelion leaf as a treat, and when he's out on the floor or on the field with me he likes the huddle on my shoes or under my legs and circle around them before going on his next adventure to nom a lil clover sprig
He associates me with warmth and safety and food and that good feeling on his skin he gets when I touch him gently. And whatever that manifests as in his little reptilian brain is some form of love.
Oh my god thank you OP and everyone in this thread. Seriously this is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I had an entire argument with a philosophy professor about this very topic. It took up the first ten minutes of class, complete with pre-printed sources from internet articles. Trying to suggest that any facsimile of affection that animals display is anthropomorphizing and all in our heads is some gaslighting, anthro-centric BULLSHIT!
I wish the ultra rich would take more pride in actual services to society. I wish they bragged about buying a new metro line for their city, or stocking up food banks. I wish Bill Gates and Elon Musk were beefing over who could repair the most potholes, or fund the most scholarships. I wish they considered their ability to help their society a privilege.
Hot take, for all the ways that the Roman system of government was fucked up, this kind of thing was the one thing they got right. The richest citizens in Rome flaunted their wealth by donating extravagant funds to community service and funded the Roman navy.
no offence but i think a lot of us me included donāt actually want romantic love as badly as we think and really are just lonely and crave a closeness and intimacy that feels out of reach in friendships because of societyās emphasis on marriage and the nuclear family so we project that into the never ending search for a perfect love and a soulmate when really we all just want to mean something to someone
this post is doing the rounds again and I just wanted to say now that iām in a long term loving relationship i know more than ever that this is true. you cannot live on romantic love alone, one person cannot fulfill you, community is the key to a happy life, surrounding yourself with friends and family that love you will only make your relationship with your partner stronger and itās so important to have people who see your relationship from the outside and who you can confide in other than just your partner. as well as this i truly believe you cannot have romantic love without a strong friendship, my boyfriend is honestly my best friend and that is what holds us together, romance ebbs and flows but a strong friendship is what will help you through the hard times and ground you and itās where the real intimacy trust and loyalty comes from
No Iām not attracted to you. Quit your evil putting your finger under my chin to make me look up at you. I know Iām your nemesis and all but we really need to set some boundaries when youāve got me tied up like this.
No look I get it. Youāve got your evil plan, youāve gotta get me out of the way but you also want to see me suffer as I watch the world burn, I know. But like, Iām not into this. Sexually or otherwise. Wait, you thought I was doing this because I liked you? Iām trying to stop you from using a death laser. No I donāt think death lasers are sexy what on earth are you talking about
Wait. Thatās why you dress like that? I thought that armor was impractical. No I donāt find our relationship to be homoerotic I find it to be tedious. Look, man. We all keep trying to get you into therapy. No Iām not kink shaming you Iām saying youāve completely misinterpreted this relationship. I actually do think you should answer for your war crimes. Yes, really. No youāre the one not listening to me in this situation. Yes that is the alarm the others will have cut all your wires and called in the fbi by now.
What do you mean you thought we had something special? I have other enemies. Youāre not the only one. No Iām not doing kinky things with them either I blow up their nefarious devices. Speaking of which, you might want to move like⦠ten feet to your right.
The henchmen in the tags who have been assuring the villain since the beginning that āof course he likes you back, why else would he keep coming to destroy your death lasersā
You know I didnāt intend for this character I made up to be aromantic but this whole post has turned into being arospec at a family reunion simulator
Okay but back when I could afford a therapy my psychiatrist asked if I had written any fanfiction or planned any out in my head, and I was "nah, not really." And she nodded and looked down at her notes and was like "so how do you feel about possibly trying Zoloft?"
I started laughing and she was like "I know it sounds funny but it's been six months without you engaging in your favorite hobby and that's a sign the depression is getting to a point where we might why try some treatments with meds in addition to therapy."

I think this has to be an autistic person thing, but itās always baffling to me how out of touch I am with my own physical/emotional needs.
Like, I felt off and kinda gloomy all day, and kept wondering why. Then right before bed I randomly played with some strangers online and had a really nice time and felt refreshed and perked up. I thought back on it and was like āoh yeah itās been awhile since I hung out with my friends. I was lonely this whole timeā.
I couldnāt just figure that out even tho I was actively trying to figure out why I felt so off. I couldnāt identify what my emotional need was until it was filled. This has happened to me before, but itās always a bit jarring. In other ways I consider myself so self aware, but I have to play detective to figure out my own feelings.
One of the reasons Blue Sky by Wafflestories is one of my all time favorite fanfictions (controversial opinion I know /s) is that, outside of the context of that story, Iāve never really seen the appeal of the ship that it centers, yet I still genuinely adore the fic, including the romantic parts.
I donāt hate Chell x Wheatley, Iāve just always thought it was one of those ships where people saw a non-romantic piece of media featuring a man and a woman and went āWanna know what would spice this up? Heteronormativity!ā But Iāve reread Blue Skies over and over throughout the years since I first read it back in 2015 because the author was successfully able to show me through their writing what they saw in the ship that made them like it.
I still donāt see the appeal of the ship just going off of canon, and I donāt think I ever will, but I do enjoy the ship specifically in the context of that fic.
From the way Iām talking about it youād assume that Blue Sky is primarily a romance, but itās a lot less focused on it then youād think itād be. Itās primarily a character study that explores the nature of identity in a genuinely interesting way. It takes a very fanon-ey concept that was quite popular at the time it was published (wheatley becoming/being human) and dives headfirst into the philosophical and psychological implications of that idea.
Iād also be remiss not to mention the fact that it has some of the best written original side characters in all of fanfiction. Typically I find original characters in fanfiction to be particularly uninteresting (Iām reading fanfiction not regular fiction), but I love every member of the supporting cast in this story and was actually really engaged whenever one of them was the focus of a scene. Waffleswrites really took the time to make Eaden feel like an actual community that could exist.
My point is: thereās a reason this fic is so famous and I think that you should give it a read even if youāre disinterested in the ship it features. You can find it on FFN, but if youād prefer an audiobook version Outis Audio on YouTube made a really nice podfic of it.
OK this is a genuine question. Full disclosure, I just finished the Inazuma archon quest so itās possible one of the later quests answers this question.
Why do people ship Childe and Zhongli? Like, Iām not opposed to it or anything just baffled? Is there an interaction in a limited event that gave people that vibe? Is it from when Childe introduced the traveler to Zhongli initially? Pls explain. Iāve seen so many fics with that tag and had a friend recommend me The Sister (which was amazing btw) so now I just want to know what the basis for that ship is.

This philosophy is 100% what makes John Smith a compelling villain! Itās like the basis for his entire regression arc and one of the best things about the show.
I miss when everyone on my dash listened to Welcome to Night Vale so thereās be a good chance that on any ole day someone would reblog a quote that would grab me by the throat and forcibly ascend me to a higher plane where I understood myself and the universe better and with more kindness but also a little spook
āThe past is gone, and cannot harm you anymore. And while the future is fast coming for you, it always flinches first and settles in as the gentle presentā are you kidding me this quote has propelled me through at least three emotional crises
āThe desert seems vast, even endless. And yet scientists tell us that somewhere, even now, there is snow.ā
That quote literally got me through grieving my brother like WTNV goes HARD

"When we talk about teenagers, we adults often talk with an air of scorn, of expectation for disappointment. And this can make people who are presently teenagers feel very defensive. But what everyone should understand is that none of us are talking to the teenagers that exist now, but talking back to the teenager we ourselves once were ā all stupid mistakes and lack of fear, and bodies that hadnāt yet begun to slump into a lasting nothing. Any teenager who exists now is incidental to the potent mix of nostalgia and shame with which we speak to our younger selves."

"And now, a special report. Crocodiles: Can they eat your children? *YES.*"
"Lie down and look up at the ceiling and breathe with those curiously fragile lungs of yours and remind yourself: Donāt worry. Donāt worry. All is as it was meant to be. It was meant to be lonely and terrifying and unfair and fleeting. Donāt worry."
"As long as Iām reminding myself things, Iām a good person, worthy of love ā both from myself and others."

I discovered this podcast at the beginning of high school, and let me tell you, it rewired my synapses.
Not only was it my first experience with positive LGBT representation, it was the show I clung to when everything else went to shit. Whatever was going on in my life, I knew I had this show in my corner, making me laugh, making me cry, making me feel okay about my place in the universe.
I owe the creators of this podcast more than I could express.
^ This!!! I absolutely love this Night Vale Renaissance post! My Night Vale origin story is basically the same. I found it in middle school when my mom introduced it to me for us to listen to on a long car trip. It was the first experience I can remember with LGBTQ rep in media that I consumed.
I absolutely loved this podcast. I was a Patreon for awhile, I saw them live, I bought all their script books. I made T-shirts (which I still own and wear regularly!) with Night Vale quotes and goofy images on them. For a sampling of some of the ones we made:
Night Vale was a huge deal for me and Iām glad itās getting the recognition it deserves. š
