imagine you’ve just made it to the place you’ve always dreamed of. all your life has been working towards this moment. you’ve sacrificed more than others your age to work towards a goal that sometimes seemed so impossible. and yet you’re here now. you’re among the greatest. one of only twenty in the world to be given the title of ‘formula one driver’.

now imagine you’ve been given this opportunity to become teammates with the guy you’ve been stalking idolising for years. the same guy you’ve probably -maybe- developed a bit of a parasocial relationship with. i mean, remember how you felt when he noticed you on twitter that first time. does that adrenaline rush match the feeling of a win? but you’re smart and self-aware enough to know that this might come across as weird so you push it all down.

that first meeting, you’re a ball of nervous energy. of course you hope you’ll get along. but more than anything you hope he likes you. you hope you come across as cool. cool enough to even be his friend one day. after all, you’ve spent hours watching compilations of him getting along with his former teammates. oh how they’d laughed !

this new team makes you do funny games sometimes. for engagement they say. so many challenges and videos where you’re having to constantly remember to be cool. calm. collected. it doesn’t serve anyone if you show how much you actually know about your teammate. you wish he knew a bit more about you though but that’s okay. you’ll have time. and if you happen to win most of the games they throw your way, well that’s only because you’ve had plenty of time to study the guy you’re now affectionately calling your teammate.

over time, you grow comfortable with each other. the fans have dubbed you two landoscar and although you admit that it’s not as cool as carlando, you finally feel like you’re in. he gives you a nickname too. osc. it’s friendly. familiar. when you start getting tagged in the photos he posts, it takes you back to when you were younger. it leaves you giddy with excitement. you may have had to remind yourself to be cool.

and once things have settled, you realise it’s not that weird anymore for you to look over and see him beside you. your teammate now. the guy you know most about. and you hope that it stays that way for the years you’ve got left together.

because this is the guy you might one day have to beat to win the most coveted prize of all
