the testament of ann lee was so good and its only grown on me since seeing but I really think the most interesting part to me is how it frames the shakers as a refuge for people who are sexually at odds with society like of course we have Ann’s own sexual traumas and Williams and Mary’s explicit and implicit queerness but also looking at the Wardley’s in their sexless marriage and John Hocknell being unmarried with a bastard son and how the first testament we see at a shakers meeting being a man who confesses to looking at his sister. The movie shows you the exact type of person that would be drawn to ann and her freedom from the sexual world without like making an explicit point of it or undermining ann’s or anyone else’s own belief in their gospel in a very compassionate way.
