I'm sure you've heard it or seen it on TV like on the show One Day at a Time. It's a narrative that's been thrown around like it's the answer to all our problems. Well I'm here to show you how it's not. I found something while googling it and I want to expand on this points.
It falsely assumes that every man is a rapist unless they're taught otherwise. So your dad, your brothers, your insanely cute baby nephew are all rapist/ potential rapist. Doesn't matter how sweet and loving they are, at one point in time they've could've been responsible for a terrible crime but luckily they've been changed. Do you not see how damaging that is? Go tell your dad that and watch his reaction. I'm sure he won't be hurt by it
Teaches people not to defend themselves against predators. On a previous post I talked about girls getting super blacked out drunk and being raped and how that was partly their fault because you shouldn't get drunk like out in public (and it goes for everyone). I added that in a perfect world they could do that and not have to worry about being raped or something because a perfect world is safe but, and I cannot stress this enough, we don't live in a perfect world. There are bad people out there that will hurt you and you have to take in account for that. And it goes along with this as well. A girl might think that she doesn't have to do anything to keep herself safe, nope teach those boys not to rape and she'll be alright! Again you can't do that. It's your responsibility to keep yourself safe as best you can
Forces male victims to be taught not to rape. Wow. Can we say insulting? Imagine being a victim to rape (and I want you girls to imagine this if you believe this narrative) and it's one of the most horrible things you've ever been through. You're traumatized by it and not only are you not receiving any help (because let's face it, male victims of any type of abuse don't typically receive adequate help) but you have people that believe you're capable of doing that very same crime that was done against you and therefore need to be taught not to do it as well. It would feel pretty crummy, I'd say.
Assumes that a rapist will change when they're reminded that it's illegal to rape when they already know. I gotta say, this one gets me. Now I'm not saying a rapist can't change because I believe in second chances but realistically speaking, especially for a serial rapist, do you really they're gonna have a sudden epiphany and think 'oops can't do that it's illegal. It's wrong' yeah no. They know it's illegal. They know it's wrong. But saying you just need to teach them not to rape isn't gonna do squat. You can tell them over and over again, just like for other crimes and that doesn't mean they'll listen
Blames all men for rape. Guys... women rape too!! The scary thing is they're more likely to get away with it than a man because most people don't believe they would do it. I myself was guilty of thinking a girl couldn't possibly rape or inflict abuse on a guy because of what we're constantly told. Men are violent. Women are nurturing. Etc etc
Enforces the idea of paranoia and hysteria in women. You don't have to be so afraid that you refuse to do anything because you feel like you're constantly in danger but you need to be aware. It's a happy medium and tumblr knows NOTHING about that. It's all about rage and panic here
Teaches women to look down on men. Yeah that's a biggie. It's not surprising; when you constantly hear negative things about someone you're bound to look down on them and think of them as lesser. It creates man haters and misandry. And it's passed off as okay when it's not.
So please dont buy into that garage. Don't think of all men as bad and don't think you have to be this cold hearted man hater to combat that. Rape deserves consequences and that goes for men and women. An entire gender doesnt deserve hate for what some people do. Apply that sort of logic to other groups and you'll understand how wrong it is
