you are not an island
Ursula K. Le Guin has truly, truly never missed even once
new phone wallpaper for finals season
I don't know exactly how to articulate this but... if you repeatedly show historical fiction women rejecting traditionally female skills/duties and doing swords instead, because swords is obviously the Most Important Thing, you are kind of implying that all the work that has been traditionally done by female hands for millennia was useless all along and not, you know, keeping civilization going. Because it's usually rejected not as a personal preference but as This Is The Important Stuff (male work) and That is The Dumb Useless Stuff (women's work) and that kind of bothers me. The message was supposed to be Vital But Underpaid and Underappreciated, not women's work is insignificant so let's all go do swords.

Angela Davis & Ursula K Le Guin, visionary women for a hopeful future
its crazy to be reading a fantasy book written 20+ years ago bc the text will state very plainly and on numerous occasions that characters have dark skin, dark eyes and dark hair and the cover art and official illustrations are all just white brunettes
the people of omelas have a moral obligation to bring as much of the surrounding territories under the banner of their city-state as possible, by force if necessary, lest the maximal utility of the suffering child go to waste
the only “ai” i respect is genly ai, first mobile on gethen/winter, hainish cycle 93, ekumenical year 1490-97
To be the man he can be. Ged has to find out who and what his real enemy is. He has to find out what it means to be himself. That requires not a war but a search and a discovery. The search takes him through mortal danger, loss, and suffering. The discovery brings him victory, the kind of victory that isn't the end of a battle but the beginning of a life.

I love it when there's a guy who lost their name. forgot it, discarded it, don't use it, can't use it, had it stolen, even just when a title is used to avoid saying it. all good stuff
bonus addendum! also guys who never had one! love guys who never had a name!!
Luuuuuv finishing a book, love it even better when it's an ursula k. le guin book bc now i have all these undefinable emotions swirling in me
Quick Sparrowhawk because I’m re-reading Earthsea and I’m obsessed.

Hangs this above my mantle like christians do jesus
Man, there are some stories by Ursula Le Guin where it is blindingly obvious that she was raised by anthropologists.
