Okay so in the Hobbit (1982), the win condition is getting some valuable treasure from halfway across the map, then bringing it back to the wooden treasure chest in the starting area.
Doing so will give you this screen and ending dialogue.
as for what's happening in the video?
You may notice that Elrond is here, this is because I picked him up in my inventory and carried him all the way back to this area. This is also why there's a bunch of crap on the floor, because I had to make room for him in my inventory.
Elrond is quite agreeable as far as npcs in this game go. He's not a party member who makes special effort to follow you around but you can generally give him orders. In this video, instead of putting the treasure in the chest myself, I am instead giving it to him and telling *him* to put it in the chest.
this results in this broken variant of the ending illustration with no text that Is impossible to dismiss or progress from, you're just locked into staring at it.
Interestingly this doesn't happen right away, you have to wait a turn for it to register.
now without the source code of the game in front of me I can't give a concrete explanation for what the fuck is happening here, but I think I have a good guess.
According to the most reliable of sources, TV Tropes, the game works like this.
What I think this means, is that rather than the game having an objective win condition, fulfilled by the treasure being inside the chest, rather: a creature will win the game if it places the treasure in the chest.
Simply put: Elrond has won the game. No dialogue shows up because Elrond is the one being prompted with it, and the screen can't be dismissed because Elrond is the only one who would be able to, and he's an NPC, he's not supposed to win the game. so the game just hangs here indefinitely, unable to progress.
