Sometimes people have a valid point and you might even agree with them but if they speak in buzzwords and say things that just inherently don't work you will never truly know their point unless you say something (and sometimes the buzzwords are their opinion and then it is just even more important to say something)

She wrote this quote referring to the plight of Ashkenazi Jews in Europe during the pogroms. In April 1948, the Arab leadership of Haifa announced they wanted to evacuate the city.

Not that they were being forced out. Not that they had no choice. They announced it as a decision.

The Jewish mayor broke down in tears and begged them not to go. The British commander told them they were making a serious mistake. The Haganah’s chief officer promised full equality and peace to every Arab who stayed. The answer from the Arab Higher Committee in Beirut was evacuation anyway.

This is one of the most documented moments of 1948. It is also one of the least told.

Before any major military offensive in Haifa, between 25,000 and 30,000 Arabs had already left voluntarily. The fighting hadn’t reached most of their neighborhoods. What had happened was simpler and more damaging: the leadership had left first. British High Commissioner Sir Alan Cunningham documented it in an April 26 telegram, describing the abandonment by Arab municipal officials, military leaders, and the chief Arab magistrate as probably the greatest factor in the collapse of Arab morale in the city. When the people who are supposed to lead a community disappear, the community follows.

On April 22, a meeting was held at city hall to discuss a truce. The terms guaranteed full safety and civil rights to any Arab who stayed. Shabtai Levy, the Jewish mayor, broke down and pleaded personally with the Arab delegates, calling evacuation a cruel crime against their own people. The British commander urged them to reconsider. The Haganah promised equality and peace to anyone who remained.

The Arab Higher Committee in Beirut said go.

What Arab leaders said publicly in the months that followed tells the rest of the story.

The Economist reported in October 1948 that the departure was driven primarily by orders from the Higher Arab Executive, and that Arabs who stayed and accepted Jewish protection were being called renegades by their own leadership. Time magazine reported in May 1948 that the evacuation was partly driven by Arab leaders who hoped withdrawing Arab workers would paralyze the city economically. Emile Ghoury, secretary of the Palestinian Arab Higher Committee, told the Beirut Telegraph in September 1948 that the Arab states had agreed unanimously on the policy that created the refugees and must share in solving the problem. The Jordanian newspaper Falastin wrote in February 1949 that Arab states had encouraged Palestinians to leave temporarily to clear the way for the Arab invasion armies and then failed to help them return. Monsignor George Hakim, the Greek Catholic Bishop of Galilee, told the New York Herald Tribune in June 1949 that the Arabs of Haifa had fled despite the fact that Jewish authorities had guaranteed their safety and rights as citizens.

These aren’t Israeli sources. These are Arab leaders and Arab newspapers, in their own words, from 1948 & 1949.

The word Nakba was coined in August 1948 by a Syrian historian named Constantin Zureiq, a professor at the American University of Beirut. He used it to describe the catastrophic failure of seven Arab armies to defeat the newly declared State of Israel. In his own words, he wrote that seven Arab states declared war on Zionism in Palestine, stopped impotent before it, and then turned on their heels. He described Arab leaders whose declarations fell like bombs from their mouths but whose bombs were hollow and empty, causing no damage and killing no one. Zureiq made no mention of Palestinians as victims. He defined the Nakba as a self-inflicted Arab disaster, a failure of Arab leadership, Arab unity & Arab will.

That is what the word originally meant. A Syrian intellectual criticizing Arab governments for launching a war they were unprepared to win.

Somewhere between 1948 and the 1980s, that meaning was inverted entirely. The word that began as Arab self-criticism became the centrepiece of a narrative in which Arabs were passive victims & Israel was the aggressor

i am a diaspora jew and would like to remain as such and i agree with the sentiment behind the bund -- jews should be safe wherever we are, we should be able to have thriving diaspora communities that are peacefully integrated with the societies around us. but we need goyim to be our partners in that and goyim have shown over and over again that by and large they do not want to be our partners.

we have no other option but to protect ourselves via a jewish state that carries military force -- because antisemitic governments have never been unwilling to use military force against jews. israel has only ever fought defensive wars -- including the war of independence, the nakba, in which the arab states invaded israel with the goal of wiping out the jewish state before it even got on its feet.

Obviously, there are significant differences between children (and adults) dying of not yet preventable diseases and people being betrayed and murdered by their former allies. Illnesses do not bear any moral culpability, while the people who murdered the Bundists very much do.

But in both cases, we're not saying this to get one over on the dead people. Their deaths were tragedies, and in the case of the Bund, horrific crimes.

But now we have people today saying, "but why can't we try [not vaccinating children and relying on "natural immunity"]/[not having a state and relying on the goodwill of goyim] again?"

And the answer is, because of how high the death toll was last time.

Iraq, if you didn't know, has been an Iranian ally, verging on an Iranian client state, since the end of the Iraq War. And they BOMBED them.

Oman has pursued a policy of 'friend to all, enemy to none' for like, decades by this point and as such, has very limited US military ties and relatively positive relations with Iran. And Iran BOMBED them.

Iran bombed more Arab states in the last 48 hours than Israel has in nearly 80 years.

Like, the Gulf states are stunned right now. Iran just undid 20 years of careful indirect maneuvering and gentleman's agreements and plausible deniability and semi-alliances in a day. Iran has collapsed decades of calibrated proxy strategy, unified the Gulf Cooperation Council, and triggered the largest interstate Middle Eastern war since 1991. Iran targeted hotels, airports, residential areas, and all kinds of civilian infrastructure in the Gulf.

I really don't know what the hell they were thinking. It's baffling to me. So baffling I've heard people theorizing Iran lost control of its military in the aftermath of the decapitation strike conducted by the US and Israel and Iranian military units just unloaded on the Gulf out of revenge.

The only stupider things Iran could do would be detonate a dirty bomb or attack Turkey and draw NATO into the conflict.

Basically, all this is to say, Iran's regime seems intent on burning down as many bridges as it can on its way out.

What's especially nuts to me is how preventable and self inflicted this is. You know what the Gulf states would probably be doing right now if Iran hadn't attacked them out of the blue? They'd probably decline to let the US use its bases and would be petitioning Washington and Jerusalem to negotiate and get a ceasefire going. Instead, now they're letting the US use their bases and shooting down Iranian drones and missiles.

But let me educate your dumb ass. Iran attacking the Gulf States is the best possible strategic window they have. Not only does it allow them to undermine the United States' reputation as a security guarantor, incentivizing the Gulf countries to expel US military bases and therefore weakening the US' grip on the oil market without even mentioning their military presence in the Gulf, but it also gives them negotiating leverage by plunging Western markets into disarray. Iran is a country that has built its entire infrastructure to be resilient to sanctions; they can withstand disturbances to the global supply chains better than transnational economies that stand far more to lose by prolonging this conflict. You immediately jumping to clichés about some kind of irrational and incompetent "authoritarianism" showed me that whatever institution you studied at was more concerned about bumping out useful idiots than actual analysts.

Iran attacking the Gulf States was Iran burning down their decades long diplomacy efforts to woo and corral the Gulf States by attacking their oil infrastructure to cause economic pain in the west. It actually pushes the Gulf States closer to the US and Israel, the opposite of your claim, because now they've decisively seen that diplomacy with Iran is a fool's errand. Now they have every reason to see Iran's regime deposed, more than they already did, because they know Iran can be trusted in absolutely no agreement they make. I'll highlight again (you must have missed it because Marx's dick was shoved too far down your throat) that the Gulf States allowed the US to use their airbases, which they did not do during the 12 Day War and would not have done if Iran hadn't been fucking stupid enough to attack them.

Basically, Iran just made permanent, long term enemies out of the most powerful Middle Eastern states in exchange for pressure to get a two week ceasefire, a ceasefire that is presently falling apart and wouldn't even preclude the possibility of a future war down the line. Very wise and long term strategic.

Iran is resilient to sanctions like a man bleeding out is resilient to dying of cancer. They're running out of water, their supreme leader is dead, their selected successor died in a helicopter crash and they have no backup, they have a population that nearly universally hates them and revolts every few years, and absolutely no way to restore their legitimacy. They've got bigger, more immediate problems that make the sanctions look like a mild inconvenience.

Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States expelling the US's military bases will happen when hell freezes over. Especially now, they're more dependent than ever on the US and Israel to defend them. They've been hoping to contain Iran through negotiations, and in that complacency, their military has been lax. The fucking Houthis have a better military than Saudi Arabia, and you think they're raring to expel their premier military ally? The guys who are gonna sell them the air defense systems to keep their skies clear for the tourists influencers? Give me a fucking break. They don't want to decouple, they want the US to do the job and kill the Iranian regime faster lmao
