I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;

The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.

It saddens me that this is necessary, but in the same way I do understand the necessity of the reforms, and this is a way that Cuba may be able to break the siege. Regardless, what they need is not childish and doomerist declarations of their “failure” from armchair Marxists outside the country. As always they need anti-imperialist solidarity and support and we should continue to give it

i'm sure most of you must've heard about the earthquakes in venezuela yesterday (june 24th). the magnitudes were 7.2 and 7.5 respectively; while felt throughout the country the most affected zones have been la guaira and caracas, with some places being reduced to dust and the number of injures and casualties climbing up. this is not a country that's prepared to deal with any, let alone this, kind of emergency, so any help that could be extended to us would be really appreciated.

it’s so disturbing how many ppl think sexual positions are something to be deserved or bartered for. ‘he deserves to bottom’ why? why can’t he deserve the sexual position he only wants to do? why does an exclusive bottom deserve to top? why does he need to top to take care of his partner, why does the exclusive top need to bottom to be cared for? what is open minded and whimsical about asserting that a man w a penis is obligated to use it for penetration, as i saw someone aptly put it once? what makes it less misogynistic to say that the presence of a hole means it must inevitably be fucked? how do you delude yourself that this is the anti-heteronormative stance when it’s so obviously homophobic? I’ll never understand it. and it’s the exact same script for every ship that has strict canon dynamics and these ppl do it across any fandom they’re in, so I almost wonder how they think this is actually care for the character, but it’s frankly just homophobic and there’s no rational self awareness needed for that

Why you say fuck yaoi for? I actually made this post specifically about western fandoms bc the supposed purveyors of homophobia in east and sea asia actually deal with top bottom and gendered sexual dynamics with much more nuance and thought than the ppl who talk about asian bl as if it’s less sophisticated or socially conscious or woke than western fandom is. the seme/uke dynamic is a conscious choice by women dominated writers to think about and confront misogyny and sexism without a woman going through that. sure there’s problems in yaoi blah blah blah idc about disclaimers but it is not our progressive slash vs their despotic yaoi and it certainly isn’t for me. why would you come under my post with What are we?
