The thing (and this whole post is based on the NHL in the Game Changers universe, no idea how it works in real life) is that a rule barring players from fornicating, or at least discouraging it and requiring a disclosure to the league of it happening, isn't a super unreasonable rule to have. Lots of workplaces have at least that.

What's unreasonable is instating that rule in reaction to a public relationship reveal and expecting it to break up the relationship like it can be retroactively applied back to when it started.

But other workplaces don't (theoretically) have that problem because they preemptively instate some policy regarding the situation that might arise due to two employees being attracted to one another, because they admit that their employees are adults with sexual preferences that neither they nor the organization can, or should have to, change.

But the NHL couldn't do that preemptively. Because that would have required the admission that at least two of their male players are potentially, in fact, attracted to other men to some degree, and that the chance of any given player being solely attracted to women is nonzero, and that the attraction isn't a choice or something that on its own should be changed, hence the need for a policy discouraging or barring actually acting on it with another player, because that is a choice.

The NHL literally don't ask don't tell-ed itself into having no standing to object to Hollanov or their relationship going public with zero warning to the league. And I think that's beautiful.

Love how often in the years of Hollanov rivalry there's a third guy who is also really good at hockey but so completely unimportant that we don't even hear his name. Who was the third pick at the draft? The third nominee for Rookie of the Year in 2011? The third nominee for MVP in 2014? We don't know and we don't care. Maybe it was the same guy every time.
