Whatever you do, don't think about Auron taking Rook's last name. Don't think about how often he's corrected people with "No, that was my father's name," keenly aware of how he sounds like a used care salesman. Don't think about events he goes to where his place is marked with "Mr..." his stepfather's name. It reminds him that everything he has was something he ripped from the hands of a man he killed in cold blood. Everything except Rook, whose last name he takes when they make their vows of Forever. Don't think about it.

God, it's... Auron taking Rook's surname is absolute endgame, in my head, because for all that he hates it, his father's surname is probably an asset on the business side of thing- taking advantage of the legacy, maybe its even tied into the company's brand since its been in the family for so long. Plus, Auron would be hesitant to endanger Rook by spouse-ing them in such a public way.

But when all's said and done, when he finally feels safe enough to ignore all that? Taking Rook's surname is such a fucking perfect way to symbolise him finally letting go of the past, of all the fear and cruelty his stepfather put on them. His name being the final link to everything that's held him from living his own life, choosing his own fate- severed, forever, and replaced by Rook.

God, that's fucking perfect. I love Rook being an instrument of change and growth in Auron's life. Giving him permission and opportunity to write new stories.

Bonus angst: do you think Faust would be irrationally heartbroken over it? Not only is Auron proving he's capable of the love and affection he's always denied Faust, but severing one of his last connections to one another. Their name was one of the last things they shared, and now Auron's abandoning even that.
