Alas, what turned out to be the final virtual poetry reading of 2020 didn't actually include a poem. Hozier read James Joyce's short story, Araby, from Dubliners.

If you’re a book nerd, Hozier calls “this old copy” of Dubliners, and he’s not exaggerating. That’s an early 1960s UK/Ireland edition! (Not in a collector's rare vintage way; It's about $5 online. I’m very pro-used books, so this made me weirdly happy.)

I tried to stick to explaining the basics of the myths referenced rather than how they affect the meaning of the song (because we all have our own interpretations!). Swan Upon Leda is obviously the outlier there, but he gave a pretty thorough explanation when the song dropped.

Late yet again! Quelle surprise, I know. Hozier's last July 2020 poetry reading included a lot of longer excerpts, but a couple fit onto my little graphic cards. I had to include the Rita Ann Higgins poem despite the length because I agree with Andrew — it really is a fun one!

Audiobook: Unabridged is just over 12 hours, narrated by Theo Solomon. Audible has an abridged version that's about 3.5 hours starring Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo and Andrew Scott.
