people forget that it's a care role. idk, no matter what people say about nursing or midwifery being the career choice for mean girls or the Female equivalent to cops - no, we would just see female cops. this is just one role where there is a power dynamic. i don't see this energy being kept for men in medicine + many people attribute this behavior to female nurses in general while overlooking how whiteness and institutional racism are huge factors.

your last paragraph touches on my exact problem with the discourse around nursing. it’s that there are issues in how some medical professionals treat patients from the basis of race, disability, gender, even religion but those conversations are spoken over by the “mean girl high school bully to nurse” pipeline ones or from a lack of understanding what a nurse’s role and scope covers. there’s millennial and older nurses that i hold suspicion and uncertainty towards because i know what they’re like and what sentiments they harbour towards some marginalized identities from working with them. there’s some gen z nurses i see that should not have gotten into the field that is meant to provide care for anyone and everyone, without discrimination, because they hold concerning biases and attitudes towards, for instance, trans people or addicts. teaching ethics and a holistic, compassionate approach is improving, but it’s still held back by the strain on the system and how bad the demand for nurses is. the solution, at the moment, is better teaching from get go, but the ideal solution would be to teach them and if they don’t get it? they don’t practice. that’s not the case—you pass, you pass, you practice because nobody’s turning away a willing and able nurse.
