…you can’t “call someone out” for beliefs they no longer hold. that is called digging up irrelevant dirt as an excuse to harass and ostracize someone. i can think of literally nothing more transparently malicious
if people can’t change their beliefs, are we all meant to just fucking die the second we make a wrong decision? it’s stupid and unsubstainable
we love black and white thinking at work! this hits it on the head.

FOREFRONT SPOTLIGHT: Coffee Talk (2020)
Coffee Talk is a visual novel by Indonesian studio Toge Productions about having heart-to-heart conversations and making people coffee.
It’s a visual novel, so most of the experience consists of learning things about the characters through their dialogue. A lot of the characters have a lot of pain and emotional issues, and they briefly discuss their feelings with you as you make them coffee and talk to them.
I mean... it’s not hard to see how my own visual novel was inspired by this. A lot of the character conversations you can engage with (Draconis has a whole conversation you can have with him if the player is noble-born that touches on his traumatic relationship with his dad) are similar in emotional scope, if not entirely important to the story. Sometimes in order to tell the story of a town, you need to veer off slightly and consider its people.
FOREFRONT SPOTLIGHT: Spiritfarer (2020)
Spiritfarer is a very chill 2D indie title by Thunder Lotus games about death, loss and resource management.
The gorgeous art style and serene vibes reported by reviewers drew my interest initially, and the surprisingly insightful writing really hit me where I lived. We live in a world of performative social action, so to have a game call out the motives of the player (through the character) was really impactful and clever.
It’s emotionally impactful without exploitation of suffering or torture porn, which it achieves through the strength of its writing and compelling mechanics. Also it’s a pretty solid resource management sim.
It really informed the kinds of conversations I wanted characters to have, specifically questioning whether it was selfish to choose to give up a life of means for one that felt truer to themselves. It’s a question I myself am still grappling with.

Lads ladies and enbies it is my distinct pleasure to say that I am done with everything I said I’d submit! Just a few videos (I’m waiting on them from others) left to add to the playlist and 3 more blog posts and I’ll be ready for submission come tomorrow afternoon!
FOREFRONT SPOTLIGHT: Phasmophobia (2020)
Even I am not immune to the charms of the co-op early access game.
Something I played a little bit during the less stressfilled weeks leading up my own game’s submission was Phasmophobia. Little known fact about me, I’m a big fan of ghost hunting/paranormal type content, so when I saw a game that actually went into the specifics of what thing works in which way to determing the type of spectre, I was immediately here for it.
One thing I really enjoyed with speech input as an aspect of the game - I think yelling at ghosts is hilarious so I often got very aggressive when it came to ghost investigations with my friends. They always prompt you to call out its name, so I ended up yelling “(ghost name)!! COME FUCK ME UP!!!” a lot, it was really fun.
It actually inspired a similar aspect of my game, the decoding puzzle where you have to input your own decoded version of a secret message. Unique player input is something we take for granted in games - it’s usually only used to give yourself a name, so being able to prompt a player to guess something is very cool to me.
