was talking to a coworker and realised i could not for the life of me remember his name but i was too embarrassed to ask because we've spoken multiple times so mid-conversation i started concocting a plan to nudge the conversation towards the ID photos on our building passes so that i could be like oh my ID photo is awful haha the camera they use to take these has a real talent for making me look as unphotogenic as possible and then he would say oh yes me too haha everyone says that (because they do) and then i would be able to say well let me see yours it can't be as bad as mine! and he would show me his ID because we are coworkers and why wouldn't he and this would allow me to see his building pass which of course would have his name on it and then i would be able to say well yours is perfectly nice it must be me that's the problem! and then we would have a polite chuckle about it and i would have his name without needing to ask for it and he would be none the wiser and all would be well but then before i could execute this fine plan a little voice in my head went "so this is some light yagami bull shit you are about to pull" which was such a violent reality check it shocked me completely out of my embarrassment and i went "hey im so sorry your name has slipped my mind could you remind me" and he did and it was fine.

god firefly had it all. the soundtrack. the way every costume looks like it was pulled straight from a goodwill. zoe and mal's whole deal. the terrible chinese pronunciation. sex work being the most respectable and unionized profession of the lot. spaceship cargo hold full of cattle. "shiny." teenage girl with mysterious unexplained psychic powers. old traveling preacher with a mysterious unexplained past. chekov's compression coil. "pretty spry for a dead fella." wash's slutty little hawaiian shirts. kaylee and inarra's whole deal. mark sheppard is there.
once you notice the lack of Asian actors--not even background--you'll never be able to watch it ever again, tho.
(and this is coming from someone who was deeply involved in the fandom and wrote a genuinely stupid amount of fanfic, I can't even think about it without wanting to bang my head against the wall.)
And let us not forget the Reavers! The ones Joss Whedon straight-up compared to Apaches! (Or rather, as fulfilling the role that Indians filled in 1950s westerns.)
The show is also extremely misogynist in the way Joss Whedon always is. All of the female characters are accessories to the self-insert male protagonist: Zoe is thy extremely competent Number Two whose loyalty to Mal keeps her on the ship (rather than getting her own) and is a point of contention in her marriage; Kaylee is introduced as a fully autonomous, sexual adult but once she gets hired, she becomes a useful idiot that Mal is weirdly paternal about; yoSafBrig is the baddest-ass assassin you could ever imagine and she's OBSESSED with Mal for some reason; River Tam is a damaged wild animal that Mal wants to put down because she inconveniences him, until she proves useful; Andi, while running her own business for years and years, still needs saving from Our Hero and, of course, pays him in currency only a woman has.
And then there's Inara. The show is great about "hers is a legitimate, unionized profession. It is widely accepted and even respected! Royal clients contract her services!" but Our Protagonist is a straight up asshole to Inara easily 85% of the time. HE treats her like her profession is shameful and disgusting. He demands access to her private space all the time, because he "owns it," and he acts like this means he owns HER. Mal insults Inara along the axis of sexism exclusively. This is not fun joshing among friends. This is a man who is angry that the woman he's attracted to is "giving it away / selling it to someone else." It's "I'm a Nice Guy" combined with anti-SW puritanism.
Firefly has great vibes. But the actual "text" of the show is rancid as hell.

listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream of, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.
