female socialisation, as complex and interculturally-diverse a concept as it is, at its core means the reality of growing and learning your behaviour from this ambient background that presumes your own inferiority. you learn (often without even realising) to act in accordance with this artificial sexist role, viewing yourself in pieces and parts according to their usefulness as resources to men, second-guessing your own capacity for anything socially deemed 'male' and minimising yourself accordingly. The host of behaviours this yields in women differs between cultures and times, but commonly includes forms of ornamentation, passivity, and servitude; these are then attributed to some innate female nature, piled on as further proof of our inherent inferiority.

Girls like that won't be allowed to show their emotions at home without being treated as hysterical growing up. someone who can easily be ridiculed, the butt of the joke. The family clowns. Don't get me started on puberty. Her brothers will be punching holes in walls, but God forbid a female child shows any mood swings.

Meanwhile, her brothers are going to grow up not worried about that. Every time they throw a tantrum as children, they won't be told it's because they are males and males are crazy hysterical burdens to others. They are just kids having tantrums.

And I think much of this has to do with the people in these groups. Up until recently, I feel comfortable saying that fan fiction (and in some regards, fandom culture) was one of the few spaces primarily created and dominated by "weird", overlooked, forgotten womyn and girls (hence why it is overlooked in the context of studying group cognitive patterns). It was also only really interested in catering to its members and the ever relevant concept of “don't like it, don't read it” kept a level of civility that permitted unfiltered desires, ideas, and commentaries via fics to flourish. Purist readers may not fuck with your stuff, but there was ALWAYS an audience for everyone. Always.
