Wonder Woman made women everywhere feel so strong so brave so powerful.Ā
Coco made latinx/mexicanĀ people feel the elation of their visually stunning arts being shown, feel extra proud of their traditions, feel cherished
Black Panther made black people from every culture every continent feel such pride such happiness such warmth.
Love, Simon has made lgbt+ people from the youngest to the old feel understood feel overjoyed feel magic.
Itās more than just a movie.
So very true...
The New York Times, New York, January 3, 1897
History in a nutshell
āWhat do women think about women?
WE ASKED A MANā
Humans donāt change much.
What are the important rules you live by? Be kind. Donāt hurt other people. Itās all the sort of Christian ethics stuff I thought was bullshit when I was a kid. No, it turns out itās not bullshit. Tell the truth, be kind, all that corny stuff.
Anyway, if you read marriage certificates from church records, a full 85% of first marriages for young women were around 18-19 years old. The rest skewed higher, into the early twenties, with only a few being below that age and only one in a thousand was younger than 16.Ā
The age of puberty has declined over the centuries as girls get better nutrition, as well, so throughout the middle ages the age at which a girl could expect her first period was around 16, where modern girls often get it much younger.Ā
The idea that women in earlier ages were married and mothers in their early teens is a myth. Marriages of children were usually only between noble families, and made for political reasons, or creepy old bastards who wanted a child-wife and could get away with it because they were rich and powerful. They often would point to the fact that the Roman elite did the same thing as justification. The Romans, of course, would point to the Greeks doing the same thing as justification, the Greeks pointed at the Assyrians, and so on back through the ages.Ā
It was considered disgusting by normal people then and still is.Ā
This myth is still brought out and touted by sick fuckers. Know it for what it is; a falsehood.Ā
And EVEN among the nobility marriages at such a young age were a much rarer occasion than those apologists would make you believe.
Letās look an an egregious example, Henry the bloody VIII:
First marriage:
He was 18, Katharine of Aragon was 23.
Second marriage:
He was 40/41, Anne Boleyn, depending on which theory you believe, was anywhere between 24 to 32.
Third marriage:
He was 44, Jane Seymour was 28.
Fourth marriage:
He was 48, Anne of Cleves was 25
Fifth marriage:
He was 48, Catherine Howard, depending on which source you believe, was between 17-22. And yes, people at the time actually were squicked out by this age difference. And rightly so.
Sixth marriage:
He was 51, Catherine Parr was 31.Ā
Even the most notorious LECHER and WIFE MURDERER in history did not marry teenagers in at least 5 if not 6 out of 6 marriages.Ā
And hereās another Tudor tidbit, both Henry VII and VIII knew how traumatic and damaging it is for women marrying/having children too young. Henry VIIās mother was married at 12 and gave birth to Henry VII at 13. It caused so much damage and trauma that she never had another child after him despite being married three times.
So yes CUT THAT SHIT OUT. Teenage girls are NOT adults and anyone preying on them is pure evil.
YOUĀ
I LIKE YOU
And as for the marriage of Elizabeth Woodville to King Edward IV, she was 27 at the time. He? Was 22.Ā
She had been married before, and did marry youngā¦at the age of sixteen or seventeen, to Sir John Gray, who was about five years her senior.Ā
@systlin This is good information, but do you have a source for the information about how most marriages back in the day were not actually usually from a younger age? I tried Googling it but I can only find things talking about modern day issues.
Well, if you donāt want to spend months crawling through digitized copies of marriage records preserved in church archives from the 12th through 18th centuries from England, Italy, Germany, France, ect (which you can do, and it will show you Iām right)Ā you can go readĀ ā Medieval Householdsā by David Herlihy, Harvard University Press, 1985. He did the archive crawling for you.Ā
AlsoĀ Peter Laslettās book āThe World We Have Lostā, where he details over a thousand marriage certificates, and he dug through many more in the writing of the work.Ā
Wait. I am spanish. Do they actually think henry/enrique VII married fucking katherin/catalina de Aragón as a teenager?
You know we see films about this in school and every one is pretty much adult there, both fisically and in the story.
Thereās thisā¦really weird trend in a lot of pseudo-European fantasy/Ā āhistoricalā books to have girls marry likeā¦really young, to vastly older dudes. Like at about 13, getting married off to like 30 year olds. And then sayĀ āWell thatās what it was like back then.āĀ
(Sideyes G.R.R.M)
Andā¦no. No it wasnāt. Thatās gross. England was creeped TF out when Henry VIII married Catherine Howard when she was between 17 and 22 and he was 48 as stated above, and rightly so.Ā
This is fascinating

Because not all girls love sparkles and short-shorts.
ā Sharon Choksi, founder Girls Will Be, decided to do something about the lack of options for girls. She said the inspiration for her new line of clothing, came from her daughter and niece, Maya and Grace, who wanted to wear clothing that wasnāt frilly, ānothing with bowsā and absolutely āNO sparkles.ā They were interested in āclimbing trees, building LEGO creations, and playing with cars and trucks,ā Choksi said. ā
from the above article:
She collected boys and girls clothes from 10 of the biggest retailers that were all meant for kids of around the same size and age and measured them. What she found was that the girlsā shirts were one to three inches thinner. The sleeves were shorter. And the girlsā shorts were barely a third of the length.
I know this was true when I was a kid, but itās gotten a lot worse since then.
Looks like the girls shorts are completely sold outĀ right now, but letās hope this is a trend
I reviewed a couple of fics Iāve written shortly after the wedding was announced and came across these sentences. Reading this hurts because it appears that I somehow predicted Shandyās short-lived marriage as well as their dialogue about postponing the wedding which makes me think (and not for the first time) that the writers may have been reading our fan fiction. I think itās sad that out of all the ideas the wonderful writers in this fandom offered, this is the one the creators chose to use in the show. Let me rephrase. Iām not sad about it. Iām furious about it. Because I can think of a thousand ways where we could have gotten a happy and respectful ending that would still bring suspense and excitement to the show, without upsetting the entire fandom and (as it seems) a large part of the cast. Plus, it would not involve stealing a hefty chunk of the plot, script and cinematography from another popular show starring the same lead actress. But instead we have gotten a bitter, disrespectful, unsatisfying shit-fest from a creator who has completely lost his ingenuity, integrity and grasp on reality. Yes, the ending was defiant, but in all the wrong ways. And I am sure that it will deter many fans who have previously supported Duff from ever watching his future projects. We deserved better. Shandy deserved better. Sharon deserved better.
Iāve wondered about them reading fanfic for plots and ideas too. I wrote about the Nutcracker and called Sharonās daughter āEmilyā before it became canon. Having your material copied at the beginning of the series feels very different from having it copied at the end, I would imagine.
there is no heterosexual explanation for this.
What happens!!?? I want this romanceā¦. so cute
Ummm im here for vintage lesbians
iām sure someone probably commented on this post already but this is calamity jane, they eventually move into a tiny cabin together and sing a song about how āa womanās touchā can fix anything. i watched this movie daily when i was about 7 and now iām a dyke
my butch lesbian professor who is well into her sixties had told me that this was her first real exposure to the concept that a woman could not only be attracted to other women, but be butch while doing it. she said this movie propelled her into her sexuality with a sense of pride and remains a cornerstone of her coming-out journey. in short, representation matters and always has.Ā
@bunnyfemme
@fairymascot
yeah for reference, hereās theĀ āfixing up the cabinā song
i really want to believe that at least one person in the production knew precisely what they were doing
Wait, when do they kiss?Ā
Calamity Jane. Love this movie. I donāt know about the lesbian overtones - since they were fighting over men and that is the main part of the drama - but strong, independent women, absolutely.
Employees at Scarborough franchise told that as of 2018, there would be āno more tipsā and that any tips āmust go in to the till.ā
Theyāre not only eliminating tips for minimum wage workers, theyāve also stopped paying workers for their breaks.
Iām just about ready to boycott Tim Hortons over theirĀ incessant greed. Whoās with me?
Also this seems pretty ILLEGAL:
If tips are permitted, it is illegal to withhold them from workers, following changes to the Employment Standards Act introduced by the Ontario government in 2015. Employers can only withhold tips if they are collected and re-distributed later in a tip pool.
I e-mailed the parent company, Restaurant Brands International, and told them that as long as this behaviour continues and RBI does not step in to advocate for the workers, I will be boycotting not only Tim Hortons, but all RBI-affiliated properties (Burger King, Dominos, and Popeyes).
RBI sounds pretty displeased with the bad press this is getting them, so keep up the pressure!
Unpaid breaks are happening at the Tim Hortonās locations in Guelph, ON as well!Ā
Reblogging to because it shows other companies RBI owns (guess who isnāt having Dominoes anymore)
The majority of well-off business owners really donāt like to share... this is why the laws have to force it.
When Fritz literally grabbed Brenda in front of her whole division, shook her, and begged her never to risk her life like that again, but we never heard Andy Flynn say he loved Sharon Raydor:
Every time I watch TC and Brenda/Fritz it just makes me saltier. Why couldnāt we have had that kind of emotion after Sharon nearly got blow upāTWICE. Nope, nothing, like it didnāt even happen. Funny thing is that without anything but what Mary and Tony gave us I FELT Sharon and Andy so deeply. I could FEEL the tenderness, the affection, the love and with all that we got to see with Brenda and Fritz I Ā never felt them. I really didnāt wait with bated breath for their scenes together the way I did with Shandy. When they fought, I didnāt care if they broke up or not, most of the time it felt like they didnāt even really like each other very much. When Brenda showed that she was still emotionally involved with Pope even when she was living with and married to Fritz I didnāt careāI would have lost it if Sharon had acted with Jack the way Brenda did witih Pope. I wouldnāt have really cared if Brenda and Fritz broke up or divorced. They honestly didnāt matter to me, but Shandy sure as hell did.Ā
Exactly. For me, itās not that I didnāt care about Brenda and Fritz - I just knew that if they fought, theyād make up because, in the end, Brenda never really had to pay for her mistakes in their relationship. Fritz loved her enough to overlook everything, even after they fought. Maybe it was guilt over his alcoholism, I donāt know, but I was never worried their relationship would fall apart because he was always willing to overlook her shortcomings. With Shandy, we didnāt even get the real aspects of a relationship, so we had to imagine how theyād react in a fight, imagine how theyād make up, imagine the circumstances surrounding their decision to be physically intimate, imagine their first EVERYTHING, imagine every little thing because James Duff couldnāt be bothered, and I hate him.
@roslinadama-sinequanon & @blossomāofāsnow Isnāt it weird that when they create a relationship and the writers love it and put so much into it but yet as the viewer you donāt really feel that much about it. You may like it and think itās cute but that might be about it. But you donāt feel it deeply. You donāt really connect with it. And then thereās another relationship and itās not really focused on but you hang on to it with everything in you. And the writers donāt really care about so they donāt really delve into it and just end up showing the bare minimum of what a relationship is. Or maybe not even put the two characters in a relationship but you feel their chemistry so badly.Ā
I think that a lot of what makes a couple interesting is the chemistry and sometimes creators set out to create a great romance between two characters but the actors donāt really have great chemistry. Maybe one of the actors has much better chemistry with another actor on the show. But the writers are just intent on creating that magical OTP with those two specific people. Sometimes a relationship is just written badly. And sometimes the actors lack chemistry and the writing is bad.Ā
I think a prime example of this from another crime drama is Gil Grissom and Sara Siddle. I never thought the characters had great chemistry and the relationship was written badly. The writers were determined to make them the OTP but then they struggled with creating interesting ways to put the relationship into the episodes and then it got horribly melodramatic.Ā
For Brenda and Frtiz specifically. IMO I think the actors had some really wonderful chemistry and I think the right actors were chosen. My problem with the relationship was mostly due to Brendaās behavior in it. They way she was always taking advange of Fritz. She was always manipulating him and was always so self involved that whatever was going on with her was always more important than Fritzā problems. Thatās why the end of TC is so much better than the end of MC because Brenda learned with the death of her mother that she was putting the dead before the living.Ā
Blossom I think you hit the nail on the head when you said āBrenda never really had to pay for her mistakes in their relationship.ā Everything she did, everything she did for years in their relationship always just ended up turning out okay and fine in the end. Itās nice in fantasy land but in reality itās not very healthy for either of them.Ā
Roslinadama, Thank you for bringing up Brenda still being emotionally involved with Pope. That is something that has always always bothered me. I was always just waiting for Fritz to say something to her about it or for him to stumble upon the photos she still had of the two of them. But it never happened! She was actually on the verge of going out with Pope while she and Frtiz were dating!Ā
As for Sharon and Andy, I knew they were going to end up as a couple before I started watching. Due to tumblr gif sets that compared Roslin/Adama with Shandy. I thought they were cute but I never actually felt Shandy until after they got together. And then I really felt Shandy. Itās really the subtext and the chemistry the actors give the characters and their relationship that make up what is the relationship. Their subtext gives the relationship some really wonderful layers. The sad thing is is that he who shall not be named had zero interest in the relationship. Shandy was only used to kick up the ratings and as a dangling carrot for viewers.Ā Ā
The relationship was different because it was healthy and a relationship between two people over the age of 60. Which so rare. So many relationships on television are unhealthy, toxic and dysfunctional. Its dramatic and exciting but it isnāt what someone in the real world should look to in a relationship. Which is one of the reasons why I love Shandy so much.Ā
But you are right we didnāt get to see any of it. They werenāt really allowed to be a real couple. They werenāt allowed to fight, be passionate, go on dates, get mad, dance, sleep in the same bed. Itās so sad that when a really wonderful healthy relationship is depicted itās not a relationship that got explored. Iām sure that alot of it had to do with he who shall not be named finding the relationship boring.Ā
āSo many relationships on television are unhealthy, toxic and dysfunctional. Its dramatic and exciting but it isnāt what someone in the real world should look to in a relationship. Which is one of the reasons why I love Shandy so much.ā
All of this is important but that ^^^^^ sums up the majority of my anger about the way Shandy was treated. I just wanted them to be real so that people could see it was possible to be in a relationship with someone and that it wouldnāt blow up in their faces. And you know, maybe if we did get insight into their relationship, we would have seen more flaws, but the bottom line is they were not toxic. Their relationship never would have evolved into a toxic one. And that is important.
Yes @milquetoast-on-acidā I think he who shall remain nameless went overboard in the way that he allowed Brenda to trample all over Fritz. Fritz really started looking like a complete doormat, there were times I was embarrassed for him and I remember thinking that Brenda was a pretty horrible girlfriend/wife and wondering why he put up with her. Fritz did call Brenda on her behavior once in a while, but it was never in a healthy way. It was always when it got to the straw that broke the camelās back and heād explode at her. I think one of my problemās with Brenda and Fritz was that I am usually drawn to couples who are equals, Jed and Abbey Bartlet, Laura and Bill Adama, Jamie and Claire Fraser, Elizabeth and Henry McCord and Sharon and Andy Flynn (remember that rational converation they had where Andy said āwe agreed that you would only be the boss at work and everything else would be a discussionā) For much of the time I never really felt that Brenda and Fritz were equals.
I also remember thinking that if the roles had been reversed and Brenda had been a guy and if it were me in that situation my red flags would have been flaring. If a guy treated me the way that Brenda treated Fritz(not giving a damn about my job, only being interested in himself and his day not caring at all about mine, completely self absorbed to the point that he couldnāt even remember my ex-husbandās name, having me take care of his parents every time they came to town, not really interested in planning our wedding and leaving it all up to me to find a venue and also leaving me to find a house for us on my own) I would have run in the other direction realizing that he was not really invested in our relationship or in me. BTW, remember how easy Sharon and Andy looked for a home together. Andy made sure to video his visit to the home and Sharon sat and watched the video and then enthusiastically visited the home with him. She wasnāt disintersted, she didnāt leave it all up to him. Equals. Partners. Being functional does not make people boring.
As you said @blossomāofāsnow I would love for them to have been Ā allowed to be explored as real couple. They both had interesting pasts, both came with baggage, both made mistakes, and I think it would have been even more interesting to watch a couple deal with their pasts and moving into a new relationship in a healthy rational way rather than the toxic way that SOME people found more interesting.Ā
Agree with everything that you all have said here! The only time sex was even mentioned in conjunction with Shandy was the doctor saying they couldnāt have any.
I never understood the interest in Brenda. I think if MM hasnāt joined the cast, TC might have ended sooner. There is only so much you can mine out of a two dimensional character. Then thereās Sharon... we got almost nothing about her, but the way Mary played her showed her depth. Most of Sharonās backstory came from the WWSRD podcasts, really. We learned about her because MM wanted to make that connection with her fans, not because the writers were the least bit interested.
And TD was the same. Andy and Sharon reflected each other and then Mary and Tony took the time to fill in the blanks with their fans.
Itās almost like there were two different shows - the one the writers gave us, and the one MM and TD brought to life. I canāt remember any other show where the leads were so concerned that the fans were connected.
JDās only way to get control back was to kill one and gut the other, and it failed spectacularly.

'It was just time that he came home and he was recognized by his own people,' says actor's uncle
The Blood Tribe in southern Alberta has honoured the success of one of its members, Eugene Brave Rock.
A ceremony held at the Tatsikiisaapo'p Middle School on Thursday saw the 39-year-old actor bestowed with a headdress ā the highest honour given in First Nations culture.
āNot just anybody can get a headdress,ā said his aunt, Ramona Bighead, who attended the ceremony.
āOnly the most notable people get one. We felt that Eugene deserved that honour.ā
Brave Rock is making waves in entertainment circles for his recent role as āChiefā in Wonder Woman, the DC Comics superhero film distributed by Warner Bros.
Blood Tribe actor from Alberta speaks Blackfoot language in Wonder Woman movie
REVIEW: This is the Wonder Woman we have waited for
Born and raised on the Blood reserve, Brave Rock was highly influenced by his Blackfoot culture.
Bighead believes her nephew has displayed leadership to the community while earning the headdress honour.
āFor him being an actor, in my opinion, heās probably going to portray an Indigenous person on screen again,ā she said.
āNow he has the full right to wear a headdress. No one can ever say, āHey, you have no right to wear this.āā

Abusive men pave the way for lazy men to get wives and girlfirends.

Finally people are starting to listen to what women have been saying all along.
And in other news, water is wet
Not like women have been telling y'all this since the beginning of time or anything.
I mean, yeah, at one point three years ago I was curled up in a fetal position literally screaming/crying/gasping for breath on my bed in my dorm room, so my response to this headline is basically,Ā āNo shit.ā
No wonder women are so likely to ignore heart disease/attack symptoms. If something isnāt as bad as my cramps, I figure it canāt be that bad.
THAT LAST COMMENT
No seriously. There arenāt enough people who understand how important that last comment is. I lost my right kidney four years ago because of āif something isnāt as bad as my cramps, I figure it canāt be that bad.ā
My. Fucking. Kidney.
Donāt force people with periods to internalize and silence themselves when they have cramps!
Can confirmĀ ācanāt be that bad because periodā. Ā I had a kidney stone and it took me like 2-3 days to realize it wasnāt my period because it basically felt like that. Ā Pain is normal for women (and other people with a uterus), itās part of being a woman, and so weāre much less likely to know when the pain weāre having is bad because we deal with so much of it some much more often than men do. Ā Pain is not always aĀ āsomething is wrongā indicator for us. Ā
jesus. I never thought of it that way.
