I changed the lighting to be a single point light with a really low specular value, turned off ambient lighting, rendered in Cycles (w/samples set to like 25), set color processing to standard, etc etc. I also downloaded a couple models from the (very good) Render96 mod project and then just directly ripped the textures. The fur, for example, is taken from the Doofdork/AndratVA model for Donkey Kong. I got them from here: https://retroaesthetics.net/n64-custom-mario/. Fantastic resource if you want to do something similar to what I'm attempting here.

I feel like it's getting closer to the look I want but it's still not there. A big issue is that I made this whole thing with box modelling bc I was initially just trying to block it out but I got lazy and the blockout became the model. As a result, the model looks pretty "off". The gloves and pants stick out in particular. If I wanted the model to be really accurate I could remake it using mostly nurbs, which (as I understand) is what 3D artists tended to use back in the 90s, but that's a whole ass new workflow that I'm not even slightly familiar with.

I also really want to render the model in Alias Poweranimator for extra realism, because that was the industry standard in the late '90s and it's available for free from the Internet Archive. But I can't download that program because Shitass Windows 11 is convinced it's a virus! So I want to put it on my second laptop, which runs Linux (I've been trying to turn my 2nd laptop into a "workhorse" for torrents and emulators and suchlike, while my main laptop continues to be used for work/school), except I haven't been able to find the charger for that one in over a month and I keep forgetting to buy a new one.

So that's where I'm at. If I ever get off my ass and figure out how to download poweranimator, expect to see a lot of Poweranimator renders on here. No apologies for the long pointless rant, it's my blog and I post what I want
