Today's wasp of the day is Trirogma caerulea!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
One of the cockroach's best defenses against wasps looking to turn them into baby food is their powerful legs capable of giving the wasp a brutal swift kick. It would make sense for the wasp to avoid the roach's legs then. Wasps don't care about what you think would make sense though. This midnight sapphire goes straight for the ankles, biting the roach's legs to get it to recoil and thus become venerable to a quick sting. Now paralyzed, she'll use her powerful jaws to drag the much bigger and bulkier cockroach back to the hidey hole she has prepped for it.
My first impression of this wasp was that they looked like little wizards, what with their shiny blue and white fuzz.
Video games are great, they let you try your craziest fantasies. For example, on the sims, you can have a job and a house
Only a matter of time before Bilbo snapped…
I also know one of those fanfics technically happens in the afterlife and Bilbo just bonks him for the emotional turmoil.
Ok, I'm very surprised
Last year, wasps built this nest
This year, other species of wasps built a nest on that nest
?!?!?!

aren't gorillas gentle giants or something. i stay out of his way, he doesn't maul me, we have a nice time picking out clothes together in opposite sides of the mall
Male gorillas are super aggressive and territorial. Also they interpret nearly every human mannerism as a sign of aggression or a challenge. Smiling and eye contact are both things that zookeepers have to be taught to suppress when they’re in the vicinity of gorillas.
Well unless the mall is his native territory I think I'm fine, I wasn't planning on smiling at him
This is all irrelevant because the obvious answer is five black mambas. I mean, that’s not actually very many snakes, and malls are fucking huge. And unlike a gorilla you can definitely outrun a snake if it does show up. Find an open space in the mall where you can see any snake coming and just hangout out there. Fucking easy.
Misguided! I would much rather have a mallmate I can easily see and hear coming. I'm confident I can stay out of the gorilla's way, but if I step on a snake or one otherwise gets the jump on me, it's all over.
It's not just about the physical danger either, it's about my mental health. One gorilla, unless he's actively mad at me, I just keep a healthy distance between us and make sure I never get trapped. With the snakes, it requires a lot more constant vigilance
They should substitute "chimpanzee" for "gorilla" in this hypothetical.
if it was a chimp i'm taking the fucking snakes
Black mambas have a reputation build on being very venomous and very fast. I'm not sure why you would think you could outrun one (or five) in an enclosed space like a mall.
Malls usually have pretty slick floors, and escalators. I’d choose the gorilla simply because I think that would make an more interesting story (and a better-selling autobiography, I Survived the Mall Gorilla) but I think I’d stand a pretty good chance at avoiding the mamba. They’re fast and aggressive and will chase you but unless we started immediately beside each other I think my sneakers would have the terrain advantage over scutes.
this is too good to leave hidden in the replies
fucking enamored with the implication that this gorilla is fully intelligent but is trying to manufacture plausible deniability like the movie barnyard
i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
please wear sunscreen!!! I've seen "fuck the beauty industrial complex" posts about complicated skincare regimens and am 100% with them except sometimes they mention sunscreen and no. no. absolutely not. sunscreen is a wonderful supportive friend who wants to keep you safe, and you should let her do it. throw out all your other cosmetics and skincare products if you want, but keep your sunscreen. and if you're not wearing sunscreen, start wearing it!!!! this is not about terror of aging, this is not about every tiny imperfection our fucked-up culture has made you feel insecure about, this is about protecting yourself from skin cancer. wear the damn sunscreen.
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
It's entirely possible to read The Hobbit as a kid age 8-9 but also the book is very specifically made to be read to children in short increments before bed. Like actually tailor made for that purpose by a father of four. It's why it exists at all. And if you read it it's like ... *Blindingly* oblivious. I know this because I just finished reading it to my kid. He's 7. He liked and understood it just fine. We're going to see the play adaptation of it in a few weeks. In a children's play. Because it is based on a book for children.
it was not on wheat...

Yeah sorry wasp haters but y’all don’t know shit. Have you ever even seen the cuteness of Bembicini?
What's little buddy doing?
It’s probably a female digging a burrow for her eggs :)
[ID: a short video of a small wasp hovering, then landing to dig into the sand of a beach , repeatedly flying off camera a short while before returning to dig some more. The wasp has bright yellow legs, dark brownish red wings, and its body appears mostly white with thin black stipes, and it does not have the tapered waist a lot of wasps do, instead being a smooth oval shape from head to butt, which is slightly tapered and black. It has two black antennae. There is no dialogue or buzzing audible in the video, and all you can hear is the crashing of waves from the ocean. End ID]
male paper wasps are famously huge wimps but no individual i've ever encountered captures their essence quite as much as this one pathetically clinging to a plant like a crying baby while looking at me with his huge pleading green eyes after i interrupted his early evening nap
