billy's pov is kinda funny if you think about it.....he's someone who really doesnt get all the hype around sex, romantic love and erotic desire yet time and time again he sees the brightest, most cunning and cutthroat minds of his generation succumb to it. no wonder he's so frustrated all the time. i would be to if my fucking crew, captain and quartermaster kept getting distracted by dubiously consensual workplace romances....like lock in divas!!
me watching 'gratuitous' sex and violence and ''problematic representation'' in my shows and movies made for adults
An experimental Flint, for @pepp-love. I've never drawn him this way, so⌠yeah.
They saw you from across the club and they liked your blood type

So hey, it turns out that Gillian Anderson dressed up like Morticia Addams was something we all needed in our lives.

you know that trope where itâs princess + knight, but theyâve both been captured by the bad guys and the princess is now gripped by the jaw by the villain, receiving a thin cut to her cheek while remaining completely still with a defiant look in her eyes even as a droplet of blood begins to trickle out of the wound, all while 3 people AT THE VERY LEAST need to have their hands locked on the knight because heâs thrashing around like a wild animal, trying so so so desperately, violently, to get to her?
yeah, thatâs porn to me.
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
#'this is present in the text' is often a good first step #but those second and third ones (naming it; describing its function) are vital (via @elucubrare)
to be fair when the word initially came about it was often used as a shorthand to say "hey there are some issues with this that aren't hugely bigoted but it does deserve some discussion" and opening up talks around things.
it was also used when people wanted to discuss themes and tropes that had multiple issues where the root or how things reflected into life isn't perfectly clear.
the internet being what it is that quickly got lost and it became the word that essentially means " this is bad no more discussion", rather then an invitation to start one.
Completely true. Ultimately the core problem I think is that social media and the way humans interact on the internet creates massive pressure explicitly against critical thinking and acknowledging the existence of nuance.

getting warmed up for the zine :)
fact: Jack Rackhamâs crew accidentally collects lesbians
hypothesis: when Flint and Thomas break everyone out of the plantation and start their own crew, it winds up being, percentage-wise, pretty gay
extrapolation: âserving under Rackhamâ and âsailing with Flintâ becomes pirate slang for being gay
like
âI met a gorgeous girl last night but then I found out she, you know, serves on Rackhamâs crewâ âtough, better luck next time youâre on shore leave, mateâ
or âwe all went up to visit Mapletonâs girls, except for Harrison, âcos he sails with Flintâ
or âyou think sheâs on Rackhamâs crew, or is it worth asking if i can see her again tomorrow night?â âher? no, I heard she, uh, you know, works for Eleanor Guthrie, I think itâs worth a shotâ
anne hears people talking about women who âsail with Rackhamâ in whispers, so she storms up to jack like âwhat the fuck are you planning with all these people?? without telling me??â and jack is just like â???? iâve never heard of those ladies in my lifeâ while max is just giggling in the background because She Knows that jackâs legacy is being the Letâs Go Lesbians guy
Eric will be taking part in an AMA on June 4th! But look at his little Armenian Vampire 2.0 doodle heâs so sweetie. And heâs so bashful with it.
I forget how much of the X-Men movie verse is just
Charles: my old friend, my love, we could have retired to a house by the sea where no one knows us and I would have kissed you in the sunshine and tenderly fed you fresh fruit every day for breakfast had shit not gotten real. Please reconsider your decision to kill us.
Erik: I still dream of that house by the sea and making love to you every night and bringing you your tea made just how you like it every morning, my love, my old friend. I'm gonna kill you now.
Instead of True Crime, there should be a genre called True Law. everyone researches heinous acts of cruelty that were entirely, perfectly legal & sanctioned by the governments of their countries. Instead of True Crimeâs freakish eugenicist obsession with âThe Criminal Mindâ (as if âcriminalsâ are a biologically different species) â-the True Law podcasters could describe horrific acts of violence committed by police officers & prison guards & soldiers &etc, and breathlessly attempt to understand the twisted mysteries of âThe Legal Mind.â Itâs necessary, for Equality
