THIS ONE FUCKING WORKS. REBLOG IT.
this for real fucking works
gosh but like we spent hundreds of years looking up at the stars and wondering āis there anybody out thereā and hoping and guessing and imagining
because we as a species were so lonely and we wanted friends so bad, we wanted to meet other species and we wanted to talk to them and we wanted to learn from them and to stop being the only people in the universe
and we started realizing that things were maybe not going so good for usā we got scared that we were going to blow each other up, we got scared that we were going to break our planet permanently, we got scared that in a hundred years we were all going to be dead and gone and even if there were other people out there, weād never get to meet them
and then
we built robots?
and we gave them names and we gave them brains made out of silicon and we pretended they were people and we told them hey you wanna go exploring, and of course they did, because we had made them in our own image
and maybe in a hundred years we wonāt be around any more, maybe yeah the planet will be a mess and weāll all be dead, and if other people come from the stars we wonāt be around to meet them and say hi! how are you! weāre people, too! youāre not alone any more!, maybe weāll be gone
but we built robots, who have beat-up hulls and metal brains, and who have names; and if the other people come and say, who were these people? what were they like?
the robots can say, when they made us, they called us discovery; they called us curiosity; they called us explorer; they called us spirit. they must have thought that was important.
and they told us to tell you hello.
this is far and away the most popular post i ever made on tumblr. people have asked me if they could illustrate it, people have asked me if they could turn it into a novella, people just messaged me to say it made them cry. that means more to me than i can say.
you probably heard that the mars opportunity rover died today.Ā
it was hard news to hear. i cried at my desk at work. it doesnāt make it easier that it was only supposed to run for 90 days at all; it doesnāt make it easier that it lived 14 years longer than it expected to. it lived a full life. it lived a very good life. it was the first set of eyes on miles and miles of mars. it was an explorer, it was tough, it was very, very brave. and none of that makes it easier, none of that makes it okay that it is not going to sing happy birthday to itself again.
about a year ago, my childhood cat died. i loved her more than anything. i donāt live near my family any more, and i wasnāt there for it, but my parents were, and they held her while her body gave out, and they say she knew she was with them, she knew she was loved.
i know opportunity was a computer inside a movable body, and not a person, or even an animal. still, i wish it had had people to hold it. i wish it had been with the people who cared for it. it seems very hard to me, to die so far from home.
but i think - to the extent to which we can say computers āknowā things, which i think is a great deal; i think knowing is most of what computers do; i think if they have a consciousness, knowledge must be nearly all of it-
i think opportunity knew it was loved.Ā
every couple of months i dream that iāve gone home and my catās there. even now, even though my grieving is over and done with, i visit her in my dreams, and i hold her, and every time, she purrs. she missed me. sheās so happy to be with me again.
thatās a very human thing, dreaming of what weāve loved. what weāve lost. dreaming things that outlast death. like robots, and singing.
āThey called me Voyager. They said to give you this record made of gold. It says, āHello Friend! Hello! We hope you are well. We hope you are happy. Have you eaten? Come visit us when you have the time, we would love to meet you!ā.ā
Voyager 1 will lose all power to its Low Energy Charged Particle Instrument this November, 2026. After that, all it will have left is its data tape recorder. It is unknown when this instrument will fail. Voyager 1 is the farthest from earth we have ever sent anything. Her sister, Voyager 2, and the younger New Horizons, are the only three things we have sent out of the solar system that are still transmitting back to us.
But only the Voyagers have our voices carried with them. And not only human voices speaking English, but voices speaking over 55 languages, living and ancient; all are words of welcome. Some even include invitations, askings after health, and wishes for joy and peace. My favourite is Punjabi, which says not merely āwelcomeā but āWelcome homeā; and Amoy, which includes āHave you eaten? Come visit us when you have the timeā. Not just human voices, but also humpback whales, and the sea, and the birds, and the animals, and the rain and the thunder. We get told the golden record is about āusā but I donāt think it gets emphasised itās about ALL of us, not just humans. We didnāt want to show the universe just humanity, we wanted to share EARTH.
And I cry about that a lot. Iām not ashamed to say that. I am crying right now as I type this. Because I think thatās just an incredible testament to send out into the universe. Iām so grateful that our legacy will be one of the BEST of humanity, the best of us. Iāve said before, for all the petty problems (and they are PETTY, no matter what governments say) of money and war and power and violence and labour that occupy too much of everyoneās lives, none of that is on our first messageāperhaps our only messageāout into the universe. There is no sound on that golden record of screaming, of crying, of coughing, of guns or pain or work, of shareholder numbers or stock prices or kings. There is only singing and joy and invitations from friends. There is only the distilled essence of what humans are:
Hello, friend!
Have you eaten?
I hope youāre well!
Come see us!
We love you!
We love you!
We love you!

in 2026 DO NOT ask yourself whether your art is GOOD
instead ask:
is it SINCERE
was it CATHARTIC
was it FUN TO MAKE
is it MADE BY ME
and don't forget to stay silly
i hurt myself with Big Jack by Pet Foolery (can find on instagram) again and no one seems to have posted the whole comic so. here. someone reminded me of it and i tracked it down. gonna go cry in a corner now.

"Friends outside of Minnesota please read. I'm sharing a post written by a personal friend and medical doctor: Friends outside MN, you need to know what is happening here. Everyone knows that ICE shot and killed a woman here on Wednesday. But thatās not the only thing thatās going on:
ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike. Yesterday they abducted two US citizen employees at a suburban Target, one who was begging them to allow him to go get his passport to show them.
ICE is going door to door in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, asking residents where their immigrant neighbors live. Read that again. If it sounds like something out of your high school history textbook, thatās because it is.
ICE is targeting schools and school buses. They pepper sprayed teenagers and abducted two school staff members at the high school up the street from me on Wednesday. Police are literally escorting school buses to ensure children can get to school and home safely. The Minneapolis Public Schools have moved to virtual learning for the next 4 weeks because itās unsafe for children or teachers to physically come to school.
They are targeting hospitals and clinics. Patients are scared and are cancelling their appointments or just not showing up. Kids are missing their checkups and vaccines, folks arenāt getting their cancer care, etc.
They are smashing windows in cars and homes.
ICE is increasingly picking up Native Americansāagain, targeting folks based on skin color alone.
They are arresting and beating legal observers. A friend of a friend had her arm broken yesterday. Folks are showing up at local hospitals, brought in in ICE custody, with severe injuries that are absolutely inconsistent with mechanism of injury reported by ICE. (Think: patient appears to have been beaten unconscious, while ICE agent says he slipped and fell.) I canāt emphasize enough that these ICE agents do not have warrants. There are 2,000+ agents here and they are simply hunting for anyone thatās not white. It doesnāt matter if youāre a citizen or a green card holder, they will kidnap you first and ask questions later. But the community is fighting back.
Protests are happening every day.
Community groups have been leading know-your-rights sessions for months, often to packed venues.
Whistles are being distributed by the thousands, carried on keychains and worn on coat zippers, always at the ready to be blown in warning if ICE is spotted.
Drivers are following ICE vehicles, blaring their horns in warning.
Businesses are locking their doors even while open to keep employees and customers safe. As I type this, Iām standing guard at the locked door of our neighborhood burrito joint while I wait for my takeout order, so the employees can focus on their jobs. The place is packed with neighbors supporting this small business.
Anti-ICE signs are posted everywhere. The community is making it crystal clear that ICE is not welcome here.
Parents and neighbors are standing guard outside schools, organizing carpools, and escorting kids to and from school on foot.
Parents of kids in Spanish-immersion daycare (there are a LOT of these daycares here!) are keeping their kids home so the teachers donāt have to take the risk of coming to work.
Churches and community groups are holding fundraisers to buy and deliver groceries to families who donāt feel safe leaving home.
Mutual aid money is going out to folks who canāt make rent because they canāt work or because a breadwinner was abducted, or who need a warm place to stay after their homeās windows were smashed. THAT is what is happening here. This fight is ongoing and itās horrifying to watch. But we are not backing down. To my friends in other cities and states, donāt think for a minute that this wonāt happen in your town. It will. Be ready. Learn from us, as we have learned from Portland and Chicago and New York. Fight back. Donāt let us get to the last line of Martin Niemollerās poem.ā -Grant Boulanger
Here's an AP news brief with a little more info. It's limited in the way major news outlets are right now but provides context that supports the personal account shared.
If you want to help Minnesota, here is a list of places to donate to including rent relief, food aid, and legal organizations

slightly furious reminder that fish do in fact feel pain and do in fact experience fear and distress when in pain since people seem to love spreading the myth that fish don't feel pain. what is it with people assuming a creature is incapable of feeling pain or emotion just because it doesn't have complex facial muscles. come on gang
As my main income, I work with fish in a specialty pet store that's privately owned (so I'm allowed to say no and be stern to customers when it's needed).
You learn really quickly that not only do fish have individual personalities and emotions but they also have memories and recognize people! There are certain fish who will only come out for me and hide for everyone else. The pufferfish spits at me because she gets pissy that I haven't fed her. The flowerhorn bites everyone but me and my coworker when we clean his tank. I trained a fire eel to come up and eat directly out of my hand.
Fish are beautiful complex creatures and I thank the universe everyday that I get to work in a place where I'm encouraged to tell animal abusers to fuck right off.
hope u dont mind me keeping ur tags because ur right:
Iāll reblog this every time I see it.

what does it feel like to do heroin
A reply from [deleted]
Actually this is an obvious question but itās not what you might think. Let me explain it to you, Iāve been an opiate addict for a long time and tried many drugs. Drugs that are āuppersā have the most āobviousā euphoria. For example if you take adderall/coke/meth/speed/MDMA you will get this shining bright euphoria, self confidence, energy, and other drug-specific feelings (for meth like you are king or for MDMA like you love everyone). However, you owe these drugs back what they delivered to you. After a meth binge, or lots of MDMA use, or staying up all night on coke you will feel like shit. To an extent this aspect is similar to an alcoholic hangover.
On the other hand, for many people who experiment with heroin they are underwhelmed (not including IV usage, but most experimenters rarely ever IV first time). They just feel good, chill, happy, but they feel like this spooky drug āheroinā hasnāt delivered. They are just mellow. Oh obviously it has all been a lie they will think. Heroin isnāt spooky, itās chill. Itās not addictive like everyone else thinks. It doesnāt make you do stupid shit or stay up all day and hallucinate like amphetamines or coke. It doesnāt empty your serotonin like MDMA or give you a hangover like alcohol. People tend to just think oh, what a nice drug.
So the next day they wake up and everything is normal. No headache or shitty feelingājust a slight afterglow of that nice feeling. Oh it was cheap as well! It only cost $10 for a whole night of being high! I thought people said heroin was expensive? And then next weekend comes⦠There are all these drugs I could do but I liked heroin. It didnāt fuck me up,āI could still think clearly. No hangover. No feeling like shit later. I still was awake. It just made me happy and content with life. Oh and itās only $10! Well, I should get some more for the whole weekend. This is great! I will use Heroin on the weekends now!
Now letās say this person works and has responsibilities. He knows he canāt go into work drunk, or on MDMA, or high. So he doesnāt. Itās actually simple. But heroin⦠Well the user might actually find they do better work on heroin. Instead of being sad or grumpy or depressed with his job⦠he is just⦠happy. Mellow. Content. Everything is fine and the world is beautiful. Itās raining, itās dark, I woke up at 5:30AM, Iām commuting in traffic. I would have had a headache, I would have been miserable, I would have wondered how my life took me to this point. This point Iām at right now. But no, no, everything is fine. Life is beautiful. The rain drops are just falling and in each one I see the reflection of every persons life around me. Humanity is beautiful. In this still frame shot of traffic on this crowded bus I just found love and peace. Heroin is a wonder drug. Heroin is better than everything else. Heroin makes me who I wish I was. Heroin makes life worth living. Heroin is better than everything else. Heroin builds up a tolerance fast. Heroin starts to cost more money. I need heroin to feel normal. I donāt love anymore. Now Iām sick. I canāt afford the heroin that I need. How did $10 used to get me high? Now I need $100. That guy that let me try a few lines the first time doesnāt actually deal. Oh I need to find a real dealer? This guy is a felon and carries a gunāhe can sell me the drug that lets me find love in the world. No this isnāt working, I need to quit.
To answer your question, heroin feels nice. Thatās all, it just feels very nice. You can make the rest up for yourself. Attach your own half-truths to this drug that will show you the world and for a moment you will feel as clever as Faust.
Edit: Thank you for the kind words. I received help and Iām doing well now. Luckily I was able to pull up and get help right before I entered the deadly downward spiral. Some of my friends have not done as well. Sorry to steal the limelight from OP
A reply to this from Ifuxdalion
Reading that was more haunting than any anti-drug campaign that Iāve been exposed to. Thanks. A lot.
End of reddit post.
The third image are tags on tumblr. They read #anti-drug campaigns should be run by recovering addicts #cause like #how are you gonna talk honestly about how a drug affects your life if youve never done it #how can you really communicate what it does to your life if you ignore the reasons people do drugs in the first place? #i dont think anyoneās gonna believe you when you say a drug is bad if you never acknowledge the way the drug makes you feel good #tags
End ID]
The thing that kills me about this, is that it frankly discusses the general misery and malaise that we put up with in our regular sober lives, and it says straight up that the drug makes it BEARABLE. This is the clearest and most straightforward description of ādrug addiction is not a failure of personal strength and character, it is an attempt to medicate and make survivable the horrifying sociocultural conditions that we are being forced to accept as the normal cost of living.ā Itās the Rat Park drug addiction hypothesis demonstrated in humanity.
