I want you guys to all start making a bigger stink about Tumblr's Age Verification Horseshit.
Like they tried to change Reblogs and people rightfully got up in arms, this is a LOT worse. In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. Die Gedenken Sind Frie baby. This is all a reaction to people getting uppity about their lowly lowly rights and is being propped up by the same bad actors tht have made life unlivable. Fuck that shit.
"Well it's only being rolled out in Brazil and UK" Yeah, to start. "Well they're being forced to do this by laws." YOu know it's always really funny when these tech giants (Or whatever you call owning tumblr dot com) get really antsy about laws considering they pick and choose which ones they abide by.
This is a breaking point and it's going to be very interesting to see how we proceed from here.
i get this now and it won't let me click through to any 'mature' blogs :(
Where's the fucking. The form. The fucking form. Hang on, lemme find it.
Tumblr is a place to express yourself, discover yourself, and bond over the stuff you love. It's where your interests connect you with your

Doodled this on Thursday night, inspired by a couple busy nights of prep-work and logistics for local May Day event.
Could just as accurately work as a representation of how I feel arriving home around 10:30 after 12 hours of event set up, food distribution, rallying, event take down, and socializing :)
***Because they don’t have TIME to read
***Because they don’t know HOW to read
***Because they’re not ALLOWED to read
***Because they weren’t TAUGHT to read
***Because the generation BEFORE THEM were never taught HOW TO READ or how to TEACH READING
***Because we DON’T VALUE INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS
***Because our society prioritizes PRODUCTIVITY over QUALITY OF LIFE
Sick of the “yall are stupid because you’re lazy” narrative. Obviously people with no time no family no money no books no education no perspective no respect no options no support no mentors aren’t perpetually disseminating themes of Othello on the fly.
People aren’t stupid, reading isn’t the peak proof of intelligence, and society isn’t on a decline because poor people are poor.
You’re confusing a symptom for a cause
You have to treat the symptom, CURE the disease, and love the patient more than you love feeling right

A Late Walk Home
Quick sketch I threw together after a toe-chilling trek to my apartment during heavy snowfall.
Time lapse video:
Trekked home during heavy snowfall. Took a while to warm my feet back up. Sketched this while staring out the window, as the snow continued
From a project I was working on before going in another direction, but still wanted to post this. Inspired by this photo of mourning doves nesting in the fossil of a triceratops, and how it tells us that the world can end, just not forever.
Beautiful
"Arthropleuran Abettor" Illustration
New piece of digital art.
Initial sketch.
Here's the whole thing, not just the chopped part.
This should be a bigger news tbh
One of the bigger reasons I'm trying to disentangle myself from YouTube and other entities under the Google umbrella.

Some halloween-themed digital art I doodled on the computer in the library's maker space on a Thursday afternoon...
Quick sketch I did in Krita of a Wanderer camping out by a long neglected building deep in the woods.

Creating a ko-fi page for myself, not because I'm in dire financial straights or anything (well, no more than usual), but because I just figured it might be useful to have one, just in case.
I'm trying to quash my cultural inclinations to be a rugged individualist and recognize that sometimes I can use support.
---
That said, there millions of people around the world who have more immediate need of support than myself, and I encourage people to do what they can for them too.
For instance, the Hassouna family:
*spotfund is the easiest place to create beautiful and free online fundraisers. It takes just minutes to start raising money today.
The situation in which they and their people are trapped is constantly shifting and getting catastrophically worse, but that does not mean that us living in relative comfort on the outside should just give up hope on their survival!
Nobody asked me but at the end of the day I think that “facial recognition government ID age verification to access the website to protect the children” is sort of like if we mandated an 18+ government-issued licensing exam to remain horizontal for excess of 5 seconds in public back during the planking trend of 2011
My point being: it’s a waste of resources, it’s going to harm and bother more than it’s going to help, and frankly if your kid can find a way to get hurt doing it then that’s really more of a life lesson/personal development thing than a “upend society” thing anyways, and it could probably be resolved better by a single sit-down-and-talk session with their parents
I’ve just done the math and realized that 2011 was now nearly 15 years ago but to the younger folks out there we used to do this for fun
Pikaia Illustration
In 2024, researchers Mussini et al published a new interpretation of the Burgess Shale organism Pikaia gracilens. Apparently, past descriptions of its fossils had been depicting it upside down the entire time (appendages assumed to be parapodia like those seen are the undersides of snails have now been interpreted as branching gills that would have pointed upwards).
Maybe not as exciting as when Hallucigenia (another Cambrian organism known from fossils in the Burgess Shale) got an updated description back in 2015, but it was still pretty cool news in the world of palaeontology :)
After I found out about the study, I felt inspired to start doing some sketches during the summer of 2024 based on the new description (plus feedback from a paleontologist I kept bothering):
I started a larger, more polished illustration based on the sketches, but I ended up setting it aside for a while due to focusing on activism and moving to a new apartment.
One year later, and I finally got around to finishing it:
Mixed media - pen-and-ink, watercolor paint, watercolor pencil, and the digital program Krita.
Btw, I also uploaded the final illustration to Wikimedia Commons under a CC BY-SA license (LINK), so it's free for sharing or remixing so long as its properly attributed and shared alike licensing-wise.

I'm boycotting Youtube today due to the whole "AI deciding wether you're an adult or not and if it says you're not you have to give us your ID" thing, and it once again signifies how horrifying it is that Youtube appears to be the only option for video content nowadays (TikTok is an entirely different beast).
Back in the day there were multiple video platforms to chose from, Rever, Blip TV, and a few others I can't remember. This gave people multiple options to view, share, and produce content. Nowadays while there are a few alternatives, Youtube is the only one that most people know about.
This is dangerous because traditionally if a platform or service implements something that people don't like, people have the option to leave and chose something else. However, thanks to YouTube having a total monopoly on web video they're the ONLY option. There's no where else to go. It's like if there was only one service available for accessing cable TV. Since it would be the only option, that mean they could do whatever they want because it's the only option, raise prices, censor content, require personal information. It's horrifying and that's the world of long-form web videos now.
Several other websites have attempted to compete with Youtube, but they rarely last more than a year (if a year at all), because most people don't check the alternatives because everyone is on Youtube.
What's the answer to getting more video platforms to compete with Youtube? I wouldn't know the answer, but someone needs to figure out something, because if we don't, I don't think things are going to get better.
