60% the jobs that we’ll have in 20 years don’t even exist yet! Who knows what you’ll be? A slave in an asteroid mine? A client who follows rich people around to laugh at their jokes? An organ transplant repo man? A substitute pollinator? A guillotine attendant? There are just so many possibilities!
sex bot motion capture artist, self harm streamer, Peter Thiel’s blood bag,
Peter Thiel’s blood bag
That’s a job for young people, so not an option.
I’ve already been a substitute pollinator
science for the win
In between these two, most men just don't give a damn.
Staff: We’re getting rid of all adult content on Dec. 17th to combat illegal content!
Everyone: You do realize this ban only hurts the people producing legal content, right? Like, those small pages posting illegal stuff never tag their pages appropriately, and don’t care about having to remake a new blog if theirs gets nuked because they can just make a new burner account to post that stuff again.
Staff: …
Everyone: The only adult content that will likely be spreading around would be the illegal content, since you are strong-arming the legally-abiding and responsible adult content creators who take care to tag and label their content and not post anything that’s god damn illegal.
Staff: …
Everyone: That’s also assuming that there won’t be people that just continue posting adult content, either with censor bars or cuts to bypass the adult content check, or by just posting whatever anyway and not caring.
Staff: …
Everyone: None if this even addresses the racism problems that people did have, including the adult bloggers you are now getting rid of. You can’t just get rid of text posts or images of disgusting rheotoric unless there’s a nipple in the mix, yeah?
Staff: …
Everyone: Speaking of which, this new plan of yours still requires moderation, which is seemingly the main responsibility you are actively dodging with this adult content ban measure.
Staff: …
Everyone: So now, basically nothing will have changed except for all the responsible adult content creators being gone that made up a decent number of your most active and loyal users, some of the most active critics and filters of racist content users being banned, and the only people being left posting illegal content or blatantly breaking your rules to post legal adult content to spite you.
How did you think this was going to pan out?
Staff: … but we said no adult content tho.
Verizon is leaving the engine of internet culture to sputter and die, and its communities to scramble for a new home.
The Vox article that I was interviewed for is up and running, and it contains some serious fuckign information about this whole fiasco.
Information that tumblr just straight up refused to provide to its userbase at all.
Unsurprisingly to those of us watching this website deteriorate over the last year, this full content purge and ban has been in progress for a solid 6 months. The date got moved up because of the child porn thing, but it was always coming for us.
Equally unsurprising: Tumblr’s management and ownership are absolutely destroying the actual staff working on it. The company has been hemoragghing senior staff without so much as a token attempt to keep them in place. So the drops in site quality are real, and wil probably only be getting worse.
Truly astonishing is the fact that apparently this crap was supposed to “double” the userbase by the end of next year. Boy, howdy, that’s not gonna work out well for them.
good luck with your plan to sell ads targeting a user base that doesn’t exist any more, @staff.
Then they’re def gonna let Tumblr die on the vine when it doesn’t pan out. It’ll take a few years but mark my words, this is going to work out about as well as when Rupert Murdoch bought MySpace and everybody left. Also, fuck Verizon forever.
Plz lemme know if you reblog this and it disappears. I have Suspicions.
I mean, there are already mutuals of mine reporting that they can’t see this post, only a “post was deleted"notice on my blog, and I’m the OP. So, whatever your suspicions are, I suppose mark them as confirmed.
i’ve seen it disappear about 5 times off my dash.

Sarah Lamb and Steven McRae in Mayerling (Royal Ballet)
So I recently read an article about how the big thing in child-rearing in the 1980s was self-esteem; the thought was that creating good self-esteem in kids seemed linked to higher achievement, so there was a huge emphasis in the 80s and 90s, continuing into today, to build self-esteem in kids (we are now finding this is correlation but not causation, per the article). And it occurs to me that a lot of the shit Millennials get is the result of good self-esteem. I know we all hate ourselves and this seems like bullshit, just, bear with me.
This occurred to me because I was thinking about how colas are advertised now versus how they were advertised in my childhood in the 80s – now there’s stuff like the emojis on Pepsi bottles and the names on Coke bottles, whereas when I was a kid the big thing was athletes and movie stars drinking cola. And they were marketed in that way in the 80s because the idea was “You could be as cool as this dude if you drank Coca Cola.”
This marketing doesn’t work on the younger generation, because we don’t give a fuck about being as cool as That Dude. Because we were raised with this weird emphasis on self-esteem. Boomer style marketing doesn’t work on Millennials (or on a significant portion of GenX) because Millennials can’t be courted by the idea that consuming something will change their self image or their image in other peoples’ eyes. I mean yeah we’re all broke, but we understand that buying something won’t make us feel less broke. The idea of “Treat Yo Self” works because it’s based on the idea of buying something that will give you pleasure rather than status. We don’t need status. We make our own, or we find it irrelevant. Because: self-esteem. (Older generations tend to mistake this for self-absorption, because they don’t have it and thus believe it cannot be a virtue.)
BUT SAM, THEN WHY DO I HAVE SUCH ANXIETY? you ask. WHY AM I SO OBSESSED WITH MY FAILINGS?
Well, because you are conscious of them in a way that previous generations aren’t. You’re aware of your self-esteem issues because self-esteem as a concept is so familiar to you. Someone raised without that emphasis on self-esteem in schools and childhood media buys a status-maker because they’re not aware that’s what they’re doing. It’s an unconscious connection. They don’t understand why they feel inadequate, so they can only turn to the media to guide them towards a feeling of adequacy. Millennials know why they feel inadequate, and they know buying something won’t solve that.
Buying something may bring pleasure, but we know it won’t bring a permanent solution to our feelings of inner turmoil, and so our spending habits are radically different and our interaction with advertising is conditional in a way our parents’ isn’t. We want it proven that what’s being sold to us will either solve a real problem or bring a real pleasure, and if you can’t do either of those things, go fuck yourself. Because we have self-esteem.
Of course also we’re broke. But that didn’t stop previous generations, who just invented the credit card and kept going.
This is all just a theory, but it feels sound. That said, I’m open to information that supports or contradicts. I honestly don’t interact much with television advertising, so perhaps my view is skewed.
@copperbadge
So the marketing ploys that preyed on the low self esteem of previous generations no longer work because the current generation because it HAS self esteem, and they KNOW they are worth something because that’s what they have been taught since the crib. rendering objects framed as giving them worth a waste in there eyes cause they HAVE worth already. This up bringing has also caused a hyper awareness of there failings when they have them and causes a vulnerability to hedonisticly framed marketing “buy this it will make you feel good”. Do I have this right?
You’re very close, but some semi-important nuance is lost when you condense it that far down, I think. I wouldn’t frame it as Millennials having self-esteem necessarily, just that Millennials are aware of the concept of self-esteem in a way previous generations weren’t. There is an idea that worth comes from within rather than external forces, which renders external forces like “buy this and it’ll make you cool” moot. Whether or not you feel you have worth, you know that buying something will not necessarily contribute to that worth.
I think pretty much ALL marketing can boil down to “buy this it will make you feel good” – I think the difference is that “feel good” is framed differently for the different generations. For Millennials, “feel good” tends to be either “I have solved a problem I/someone was having” or “I have a sense of well-being from this, it induces happiness in me” rather than “I feel as though I am like/better-than someone else I hold in high esteem.” There’s less status, generally, attached to Millennial marketing. Which is not to say there aren’t outliers or exceptions, just that in a general sense, there’s a strong variation between generations in terms of how they react to specific marketing ploys.
Hopefully that helps! Thanks for asking.
@copperbadge I have too low spoons to actually discuss this in quite the depth that I’d like, but: First off, you’re not wrong about marketing being inherently more personalized, individualized, and aimed at playing up personal satisfaction/pleasure/individualistic expression these days; (Dr?) Jean Twenge is a psychologist who’s literally studied this whole phenomenon (I don’t have the spoons to read the article you linked but would be utterly unsurprised if she were mentioned in it!), and she absolutely has observed and noted that increase in that marketing style happened and continues to happen right along with the “self-esteem” movement’s three generations (Gen X, Y and Z) growing up over time. But also, the SAME movement, because of the following elements: - getting the correlation between success and self-esteem literally backwards (tldr people who DO better, happen to feel better about themselves; they don’t just….do well BECAUSE they feel better about themselves?? I mean, granted, it’s actually a little more complicated than that - depression and anxiety and self-consciousness all negatively influence all kinds of performance - but like…literally, the overall “high self esteem correlates with success” effect itself happens because success often causes higher self-esteem, not the other way around)
- conflating “low” self-esteem with “bad” self-esteem (tldr: self-esteem is literally the regard you hold yourself in. INFLATED self esteem is no healthier - albeit for different reasons - than the overly-negative self-esteem that comes from anxiety and depression. The real trick is to not have UNREALISTIC expectations/esteem for yourself. It’s to to accept yourself as flawed and human, but NOT worthless, which is…very literally NOT the same as “high” self-esteem, because the literal highest self-esteem is found in narcissists)
- having no good goddamn idea of how to “create” healthier self-esteem in a functioning person (newsflash: stop telling kids they’re doing well in school and such because they’re “smart”! Praise them for their ACTUAL EFFORT/RESULTS, not some potentially ~inherent~ trait that could cause good results…or else you get kids who the moment something starts being hard, wonder if they’re “not smart enough” for it, thinking there is something innately Wrong and Defective in them, instead of, you know, telling themselves: “wow, this is a little harder for me, guess I have to put in more effort”) ….basically was, combined with shit hitting the fan in our culture/economy, probably a large part of the reason for increases in everything from mass shootings, to Gen Y and Z’s disturbingly high depression and anxiety rates. No, really. She actually makes good arguments for things like the increase in mass shootings being probably exacerbated by the “self-esteem” movement’s results, and pretty much literally predicted that many of the kids raised by the Self-Esteem Focused movement would just have emotional breakdowns at some point. aaaand I’d love to think Twenge was exaggerating or playing it up, that it isn’t REALLY that bad, because saying things that amount to “our entire culture is literally getting more narcissistic, because we’re shit at understanding what a healthy attitude is, which is going to blow up in our faces because the more narcissistic you are the less you can handle things like failure or rejection in a healthy way, and not only is this bad for individuals, having a whole society largely suffering from that is even worse”…sounds like doom and gloom “kids these days!!!” hyperbole But a.) Twenge is herself part of Gen X, aka the oldest part of the “Generation Me” cohort, so she’s literally including her own life and experiences and her own friends/family in that theory and b.) honestly, on a personal note, as a “gifted” kid who was always told she was “smart” but who had her literally-diagnosed-by-a-professional neurological disability downplayed by her parents for YEARS? Which fucked her up in the anxiety and depression area because of having to GASP, REALIZE THAT HUMAN BEINGS HAVE LIMIIIIITS? Ouch. I see it. I definitely see it. She’s probably not wrong, at least broadly speaking :P anyway tldr for my post: Yeah, you’re onto something, but also - If you’re interested in this phenomenon (and the complexities of developmental psychology, sociology, etc. in general), you might want to check out Jean Twenge’s work, specifically the books “Generation Me” and “The Narcissism Epidemic”, both of which discuss how the “self-esteem” movement, particularly in parenting and education but also reinforced by things like marketing trends and the 24 hour news cycle, has all affected our culture. And… you know, because I don’t want to overly depress people, It’s not all negative: let’s end this post on a hopeful note! Twenge also has noted that, despite our flaws, we’re the three most tolerant and socially progressive generations yet; that for all that the parenting etc methods may have otherwise fucked us up, there’s both an increase in community service and volunteer work in our generations (owing to having been taught we can and should Make a Difference), and an increased acceptance of people who’re Different from the traditional privileged “norm” (because “hey, individuality and uniqueness is great!!!”) - including for example, LGBTQ+ people and POC. It’s definitely no coincidence that a lot of civil rights gains (especially women’s rights and LGBT+ rights) have been made in the last 30 years or so. We may have fucked up mental health and perceptions in a lot of other ways, in other words, we’re certainly not perfect - but we’re also, on the whole, less sexist, racist, and heterosexist, than the Boomers or older are/were. And there’s evidence to suggest that that is an increasing and consistent trend, not a fluke.
This is a fantastic addition to the post, thank you! And I will definitely dig up those books by Twenge and take a look.
Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.
Beekeeper here! Just wanted to say that the fact that vegans won’t eat honey is very silly. Harvesting honey does not hurt bees. The invention of modern moveable-frame hives means we can remove a selected frame, extract the honey and return it without killing a single bee.
If we destroyed the colony to harvest honey there would be no bees for next year, and beekeepers are incredibly careful to keep their bees healthy and thriving. We take *excess* honey that they don’t need, and it stops the hive from becoming honey-bound, meaning that there’s so much honey the Queen has nowhere to lay eggs. And if the winter is harsher than expected and the remaining honey store runs low, we feed the bees plenty to make sure they survive. We also make sure that pests are controlled, bees are treated for disease, and the hive is weatherproof and in good repair, all things that wild bees struggle with.
Keeping bees in properly managed hives where they don’t starve or die from preventable disease is much better for them than being left to fend for themselves, and they’re far too important to be left alone.
All the fruits and vegetables that vegans *do* eat couldn’t exist without bees, and the hives which pollinate those crops also produce excess honey which the beekeepers can sell to help keep themselves and their hives going.
TLDR: BUY THE HONEY, HELP THE BEES.
The Peel is an offshoot of the Onion but honestly if someone told me this was real slam poetry I wouldn’t even question it

chuck tingle, two time hugo award nominee and author of such erotica classics as ‘space raptor butt invasion’, ‘i’m gay for my living billionaire jet plane’, ‘bigfoot pirates haunt my balls’, and ‘there’s a bitcoin in my butt and he’s handsome’ just published a short story about the importance of consent and how it’s okay to have a loving relationship without sex if you want to???
that’s lovely on its own but it’s also called ‘not pounded in the butt by anything and that’s okay’, which is my favourite book title ever
I honestly thought this was a shitpost. This had too many words in it that dont make sense together to be anything less. But no. its real. this is the cover:
and this is the synopsis. from amazon.
what a time to be alive.
Older forms of English kept Latin’s gender-specific suffixes -tor and -trix; tor is for men and trix is for women. So a male pilot is an aviator, a female pilot is an aviatrix. A male fighter is a gladiator, a female fighter is a gladiatrix.
This contrasts with the modern system, where tor is for both men and women, and trix are for kids.

It’s definitely a positive thing that all these sexual predators in Hollywood are getting outed, but I hope we’re also prepared to make the connection between these allegations and exactly why so many former child stars end up dead or institutionalised before they turn 30. These are not unconnected phenomena. Like, I realise the whole “former child star meltdown” meme is a comedy goldmine, but maybe some awareness of what we’re really laughing at?

Reblog if you'd date an asexual
And I dont mean if youre like “yeah, I’d date one because sometimes they still have sex” I mean reblog if you’re okay with having a relationship without any sex involved. I don’t mean a relationship without love because there are other ways to display affection and love just without sex. That’s it.
