I Know What You Did Last Summer dir. Jim Gillespie | 1997

i have many many problems with the new star trek movies but one of my biggest ones is honestly that they tried to take uhura from the lesbians
ok so you didn't actually tag Uhura and I do thank you for that.
But considering the fandoms are decades old at this point... did you have to tag st: aos? this has already been discussed ad nauseum.
WRITING UHURA AS A LOVE INTEREST FOR SPOCK WAS NOT COMPHET OR HOMOPHOBIA.
BUT WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS MISOGYNOIR.
You do not get to declare a black woman character that is iconic to generations of women a lesbian when the series always underwrote her. ffs Leonard and Nichelle were supposed to kiss before Shatner pulled rank. Spock/Uhura also had canon moments in TOS. please keep your mcspirk out of the general star trek 2009 tag it is not appreciated.

i tagged it as st: aos because it's commentary on the movie and i use that tag to search my own blog, i'm sorry that meant you had to see it.
however, i would really like to hear your perspective about how my post (specifically the tags, as i acknowledge the post itself was pretty short as it was mostly a joke ab my own headcanon) is misogynoir, because i am not Black so i'm sure there are things i am overlooking. i totally understand if you don't have the space/time to explain or if you've made posts ab this before and don't want to go over it again, though.
as to the kiss scene, while it's definitely a crucial milestone in popular culture and especially important to talk about how nichelle nichols was treated during filming, i personally don't relate it to shipping of any kind given the plot of the episode. i do agree there are spock/uhura moments in tos, such as the beautiful lyre & singing scene, and honestly i kind of enjoy spock/uhura, i just don't like the way the new star trek films did many many things.
ok so lets go back to the early days of tumblr. There was a fan backlash against JJ Abrams because there was a lot of things he didn't get right about TOS. However, since I had never seen TOS I found myself perplexed by the argument that making Uhura a love interest and giving her more lines than she ever had in the show was bad. Turns out I found out from Black bloggers that it was not a bad thing that Uhura was now a love interest. Black fans in particular pointed out that woc especially Black were rarely ever treated to being the love interest and deserving to be with the leading men.
I reference black fans because lots of black bloggers have been run off of tumblr in the last 15 years because of the anti black racism. There's been loads of evidence tho and here's a good tumblr post where multiple Black fans have talked about hating AOS Spuhura is misogynoir.

I currently don't have the attention span to read the entire post, but I'll make a couple of points. TOS Uhura is bi-coded, in my opinion (see: her flirting with Spock, and the Chapel kiss). Also, as she is Black, any comphet or diversity argument would be invalid.
To add, the relationship in AOS is realistic in the sense that she speaks up to advocate for herself (see: ST 2009), and brings up unhealthy behaviours (see: STID), no matter who she's talking to (Spock). She uses her voice, as a senior officer and member of the bridge crew...and because she cares.

Making this week's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds be an episode heavily focused on Una got me pissed that her actress was silent for most of the X-Men movies. The way she pretended to be a different person and sound brutal than her usual tone feels very Mystique of her.

chapel: Nyota and I were crossing the street, and this man drove by and honked at us.
bones: What did you do?
chapel: She chased him to the next red light, and reached into his window, and-
uhura, walking in: Who wants a steering wheel?
you're right I should have called it out and I'm sorry.
Hey OP can we get an apology for making Uhura the aggressive one? Why not chapel?

carol's face when monica confronts her in the engine room is so funny. looking like a tiny puppy whose paw got stepped on because she got told she was a deadbeat
one of the funnier incidents of me assuming someone knew a meme irl was when a new coworker was talking about some woman who got arrested for tax fraud and I went "God forbid women do anything" and he got scared and thought I was accusing him of being sexist, so he started apologizing and saying how tax fraud isn't even bad, actually.
Representation is great! How about giving money to black girls to play hockey and making sure they have access to a rink and a space without racial violence?
