sunday - curtains drawn, cleaning up my desk <3
trying to survive exams in July ft. my trusty hand fan 🪭

submitted my thesis! my hands were shaking as i uploaded it. can’t believe that it’s finally done, it doesn’t quite feel real yet. trying to take a small break before starting to prep for my thesis defence.
I just learned of the passing of Dr. Raul Pacheco-Vega. It hit me like a ton of bricks. He dedicated much of his career to making the hidden curriculum accessible, and there is no way I would have gotten to this point in my academic career without the resources he generously and selflessly provided to young scholars. I held so much respect and gratitude for this man. From reading the memorial writing his close friends and colleagues I have read, it seems that a major frustration in his lifetime was the way Western academia refuses to engage with scholarship in the other parts of the world, and they have shared that reading and citing his work is how he would want to be remembered. To honor that request and to expose more young academics to the best resource I’ve ever found, I’m sharing his blog here. May his memory be a blessing!
While literature reviews are part of just about every single scholarly manuscript, I thought I'd

I love summer but I can't stand the heat. I'm really struggling with the temperature and it makes me slow and tired. Today was a crazy day at work and I'm looking forward to the holidays... Our school is not built for heat, it makes teaching unbearable. The students can't concentrate and me neither.

to all my researchers, students and people in general who love learning: if you don't know this already, i'm about to give you a game changer
connectedpapers
the basic rundown is: you use the search bar to enter a topic, scientific paper name or DOI. the website then offers you a list of papers on the topic, and you choose the one you're looking for/most relevant one. from here, it makes a tree diagram of related papers that are clustered based on topic relatability and colour-coded by time they were produced!
for example: here i search "human B12"
i go ahead and choose the first paper, meaning my graph will be based around it and start from the topics of "b12 levels" and "fraility syndrome"
here is the graph output! you can scroll through all the papers included on the left, and clicking on each one shows you it's position on the chart + will pull up details on the paper on the right hand column (title, authors, citations, abstract/summary and links where the paper can be found)
you get a few free graphs a month before you have to sign up, and i think the free version gives you up to 5 a month. there are paid versions but it really depends how often you need to use this kinda thing.
researchrabbit works similarly. you do need to create an account to use it, but it is completely free (as far as I know), meaning no limits to your collections/graphs.

Re-watching and taking more detailed notes on Terra em transe to prep for my final paper, and it’s going soooo slowly because I keep needing to pause and write down all the new details I’m noticing.

(guy who's not getting anything done voice) I need to learn every skill and all information
If you ever wondered why writing a dissertation/thesis takes so damn long, this has been my day so far.
Me: Okay, I should probably add a paragraph about the contextual late-18th-century understanding of republicanism. Let me read over a key text to make sure I'm being accurate. [downloads a 42-page book chapter] Me: Hmm, okay, on page one of this chapter they're expecting me to know some nuanced things about civic humanism. Better just brush up real quick. [downloads 9-page primer from Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy] Me: Okay, cool, but there's some stuff in here about Machiavelli that I really should read in its annotated source context, because that's what my history guys were working from. [downloads 283-page book on Machiavellian political philosophy with source texts] Me: Oh, for fuck's sake-- [downloads Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics]
how it feels like doing research:
