My favourite thing about characters interacting in .hack//Sign is that there's an added layer of performance in every exchange because everyone is also playing their character in the MMO. Sure, Ginkan might be upset about Subaru changing the way the Crimson Knights operate irl, or might be playing an overzealous knight to its reluctant master because it's fun rp, or a mix of both! For some characters the separation is more clear cut (like Crim, who tries very hard to separate his on&offline persona) and sometimes it's pointed out outright in a way that makes me think there's a lot of intention in how some exchanges ring slightly theatrical and rehearsed.
