This should be the last pretrial hearing, so I am expecting a few different pretrial matters to be cleaned up, we’ll probably hear some jury selection issues, and the media debate will probably be settled. Now we wait…
Carro first addresses the press issue, saying media has not been limited and at no time did the prosecutor’s office participate in such discussions.
He seems to be holding firm that press access has been very lenient in Luigi’s case. There will be full press access for voir dire, but limited public access due to seating constraints with an overflow room provided. As always, no phones for the public will be allowed.
Both jury questionnaires have been submitted, but Judge wants an agreed line of questioning. Joel asks for defense to send a redlined version (dick move - I’ll explain later).
There is another protective order (likely for a witness) that defense does not oppose. They are now sidebarring with the Judge.
Edit: I know we get a lot of press complaints about these long side bars, but keep in mind that two of the “press” members in the front row have publicly said that they plan to wait outside the court during voir dire to speak with/sway prospective jurors…. So some things are best kept under wraps until we need to know lol
The Judge said that the side bar was indeed about jury selection. We will be back on September 8 to address some outstanding motions and begin jury selection.

The type of woman I picture Luigi with is someone confident and secure in herself. It can't be someone clingy and needy and looking for validation from other people who don't matter. It needs to be someone who knows her worth and will gladly walk away if he messes up or mistreats her.
I feel like he’s such an independent person himself so he definitely needs a partner that has some similar traits.

His lawyer said the perp walk's objective was to "recast Mangione as already guilty, already convicted, already condemned, already facing punishment... in the eyes of the public." Ask yourself, if evidence was strong, why was this necessary?
Reminder, this was a very unexpected day for Luigi, his team, and everyone following the case. Luigi was booked to appear at the state court for his arraignment hearing (which ended up rescheduled to 23 Dec), instead, the feds announced their charges & took over the custody, transported him to the federal court instead. His lawyer said they only found out about federal charges that day, and that the feds likely did not even tell the state prosecutors about their plans.
This revealed law enforcement and prosecutors' inconsideration, incompetence, and lack of coordination. It also gives a glimpse into confusion, uncertainty, and fear many defendants, their lawyers, and families face when they have to be transferred - often without being told where.
It is possible that Luigi boarded the plane in Altoona thinking he was going to state court and then to Rikers that day, only to end up in a federal court and later at MDC Brooklyn, instead.
