I understand why people dislike leather and animal products. But leather is such a good resource? Like… My mom bought a sturdy leather coat in 1989. I’m in my 20’s and I now wear that coat. That’s a 30 year old coat? 30 years, two generations, one coat. Versus, like… A plastic one, that rips and gets thrown out, or releases bits into the ecosystem every time it’s washed, takes a billion years to decompose, lasts maybe a decade if you’re super duper careful, and uses oil products in it’s construction. Like, yeah leather is expensive and comes from a living animal, and I’m not saying that you should go out and buy fifty fur and leather products for the he’ll of it, but like… Maybe the compromise is worth it? One animal product, valued and respected and worn down for generations, versus like… Six plastic products that will never ever go away?
idk, I could be wrong.
this is why im so fucking pissed white colonial fucks and white vegans get so enraged at indigenous people for using hides/leather and animal bones as if that shit breaks or rips like cheap polyester does
Remember, kids:
It’s not “vegan wool”, it’s plastic.
It’s not “vegan leather”, it’s plastic.
It’s not “vegan fur”, it’s fucking plastic. It’s all plastic.
It’s all fucking plastic, and every time you wash it, or damage it, or try to dispose of it, that plastic winds up in the water, in the earth, in the air.
Hell, the damage has already done when the fucking thing’s been made. As the OP says, it’s all oil and oil products; it creates pollution just to produce synthetic fabrics and materials, even before you try to throw them away, which, I mean, good luck with that.
A lot of vegan ideology is built up around a very superficial set of ethics that are supposedly about protecting animals, wildlife and the environment, but they fall apart when you look even a little bit below the surface. Every time you eschew an animal-based product in favour of something “synthetic” for the sake of “saving an animal’s life”, you’re creating pollution and trash that won’t go away for thousands of years, damaging the Earth and making life so much worse for countless animals and people.
Think about this stuff more than not at all, please.
Eeeeeeverybody loves to get up my asshole because I wear fur. Yeah? Okay then.
When you live somewhere with -40C winter temperatures, you realize that pragmatism and warmth trump all other considerations.
I’m in and out of cars and buildings all day, every day. I have to dress for the weather and fur is hands down one of the warmest things you can wear — ask the fucking Inuit.
So you know what I do?
I check consignment stores. I check estate auctions. I get family heirloom furs.
I buy furs that are literally older than I am, in styles that would consign them to the dumpster, and then get them tailored to fit. My fur earmuffs? Salvaged fur from a coat that was ripped and functionally useless. My fur short coat? A fur that got raggedy and moth-eaten at the bottom and so was hemmed to hip height. My long fur coat is almost fifteen years older than I am, and I’m thirty one years old. Do that math.
So yes. I wear fur, because it fits my needs, my budget, and my ethics. The vegans wearing pleather can kick a brick. Only one of our coats is going to destroy the planet, and it isn’t my grandmother’s mink stole.
Not to mention the fact that buying these natural leather products from indigenous peoples both subverts capitalism (that wants you to buy cheap shit that breaks), and also supports indigenous communities and artisans.
I’m reading the notes and it’s really cute when people go “but use hemp! Use cotton! Try linen!”
Yeah?
Imma wear linen when the weather looks like this:
I am NOT going to wear hemp, linen or cotton when the weather looks like this:
When the weather outside is frightful, I’mma make like an Inuit and dress like this:
(Also, as you say: it is possible to responsibly source ethical furs. I prefer furriers like Victoria Kakuktinniq, who is an Indigenous Inuit fashion designer who interprets traditional fur designs for a modern sensibility. The funds from her clothing — and from other northern Indigenous communities — allows those northern communities to maintain their cultural traditions, while also introducing a much-needed revenue stream. If you have to buy fresh fur, Indigenous furriers are a good bet!)
@acti-veg this is just…. *sigh*
Which part is *passive aggressive sigh*?
Would it be the:
-reuse of fabrics and furs that are generally anywhere from 10-50 years old?
-recycling and repurposing of old or otherwise unusable materials like leather and fur to make smaller items like jackets, vests, gloves, hats and balaclavas?
-support for Indigenous traditions, handicrafts and artisans?
-recognition of the fact that there are very few plant-based products that will stand up to winters where the average temperature is anywhere from -20 to -50
I know, I know. Your ethics are itchy and it’s very simple to talk that good shit.
But let me introduce you to a Canadian phenomena: frostbite.
Frostbite occurs when your cells freeze. Your cells.
Ice crystals begin to form in cells in temperatures lower than -4C, which is what Canadians call “spring, fucking finally”.
In the teeth of winter, you get maybe ten hours of sunlight a day and your highest temperature is still double digits below 0C and the weather channel is saying “WEATHER WARNING: skin freezing in 30SECONDS”, and the government has put out a WEATHER EMERGENCY: EXTREME COLD WARNING.
When the weather is that severe, we don’t actually get the luxury of waxed cotton, woollen peacoats and a few layers of linen.
Sanctimony and sighs and good intentions don’t keep us warm.
Seriously, it hit -50F here last winter, linen and cotton don’t do fuckall in those temps.
Well, that’s not true. They DO, actually. They get wet from sweat and then get clammy and suck the heat out of you, leading to frostbite. Polyester is plastic, and I avoid that, because it’s bad for the environment.
You know what actually keeps you warm when it hits -50F? Wool, fur, and down. All animal products, all renewable and biodegradable, and all of which will last years with proper care.
I have two fur coats, both of which I paid $20 or less for at thrift stores, and both of which are vintage. Wool doesn’t harm the sheep it’s sheared from…they need to be sheared to stay healthy, actually…and down is harvested from animals that will be eaten, meaning none of the animal goes to waste.
Ah, yes. Truely, sheep live terribly. (Note; sheep wool is useless unles they have good pasture they’re raised on)
Ah, yes, the sheep are so mistreated when they’re sheared. A whole four minutes and they’re done. It’s like giving a fussy toddler a haircut.
And if they’re NOT shorn, you get flystrike, which I’m not going to post a pic of here because it is very unpleasant. Basically, flies lay eggs on the thick wool and the larvae eat the sheep’s skin off. It can be fatal.
https://www.fwi.co.uk/livestock/health-welfare/livestock-diseases/parasitic-diseases/fly-strike-warning-warm-wet-weather-continues
But please, tell me, the granddaughter of farmers who lives in farm country and who has neighbors who keep sheep, how sheep work.
Hi I’m the OP and I grew up dirt poor on a Canadian sheep farm and I support this message
To even pull away from cold weather folks, my people are all from Texas and Louisiana and leather is 100% useful for so many things. Tanned hides were a common good for us and surrounding tribes because they’re fucking awesome when it comes to rain protection, provide quick shade in the heat, and were a great way to protect your ass when riding an animal.
Tanned hides work great as a base for moccasins, because it’s thick enough to protect your feet from the heat of the packed dirt, and thin enough that your feet don’t sweat to death inside of them. In boots, I don’t trust any material that isn’t leather or reptile skin to protect me from animals or the elements.
Y’all really need to look at your anti fur/leather/wool campaigns and recognize the anti-Indigenous sentiment that runs through all of them.
All of this. I echo all of this. This is part of the reason why I don’t agree with veganism for ethical reasons.
They tried it
Don’t think that my boy Andy doesn’t know that neither
Andy Murray drinks his Respect Women Juice.
I’ve seen a lot of adopt-don’t-shop extremists lately (you know the ones- the kind who harass people for mentioning that they have a purebred animal), as well as a lot of discussion about the concept (it does tend to come up this time of year). And there’s something about the idea that’s been sort of nagging at me…
The thing is, if we follow the hard-line adopt-don’t-shop view to it’s logical conclusion, here’s what happens-
Everyone who wants a pet cat or dog adopts from a shelter.
Because no one is buying from them, breeders stop selling animals, and most likely stop breeding them. Even the reputable, registered, best-of-the-best breeders, because the expenses of breeding add up when no one buys any puppies/kittens.
Pets from the shelter are all fixed. This is already a thing at about 90% of shelters.
Eventually, we’ve rounded up all the feral and stray dogs and cats, because the premise of this scenario is that every animal gets a home, right? (That’s what they always say, that you shouldn’t buy from a breeder when so many animals already need homes….) So, they go through the shelter system. Where they get fixed, and adopted out.
After a while- however long it takes to catch all the strays and put them into homes, plus however long it takes for breeders to stop breeding- there are no longer any cats or dogs that haven’t been fixed, because every animal that anyone obtains has been adopted from a shelter system that fixes every animal they adopt out.
Within about five years after that, there are no more animals to adopt unless someone surrenders one or dies, leaving their pets behind.
Within a maximum of 30 years, accounting for exceedingly long-lived cats, there are no cats or dogs left at all.
Now, I am aware that I am positing a very extreme and highly unlikely version of events. It is deeply unlikely that these people can convince the entire planet to stop buying from breeders, and even less likely that every stray in the world could be caught and go through their local shelters with that sort of efficiency. But pushing for a purebred-free world doesn’t make things better for animals, it just makes it more likely that the only animals left are unhealthy ferals.
I believe firmly in adopting animals from a shelter if it’s even remotely possible that a shelter animal will work for your needs. I do NOT believe it does anyone any good to harass people for choosing to purchase an animal that suits their needs.
Just… be kind to each other, and to your animals, and to ALL animals.
No, that's what a lot of Animal Rights people want. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Love local coffee shops. your “refugees are welcome here” sign goes really well with the one that says “bathrooms are for paying customers only”
You’ve clearly never had to deal with people doing hard drugs in the grocery store bathroom and it shows.
Bro I literally manage a coffee shop with an open restroom policy, and I prioritize enforcing that policy and making sure everyone feels comfortable. I’ve dealt with everything from the easy end of the spectrum (people quietly doing hard drugs) to a lady ripping all her hair out and setting it on fire in the sink. I clean up after this stuff day after day and I still feel VERY strongly about the fact that human beings should be allowed the basic decency of a place to poop. Yes, I very frequently end up having to kick someone out of the bathroom for doing drugs, and when I do I always offer them a cup of water on their way out. Because they’re a person and I give a shit…
It’s safer for people to do drugs in (clean) public restrooms than it is for them to do it on the street. It’s also ableist to deny someone the use of a bathroom. There are countless gastrointestinal disorders that cause bathroom urgency and potential incontinence. There are other conditions, like pregnancy, that necessitate quick and easy access to restrooms.
also what makes you think a paying customer wouldnt misuse the toilets in some way, and a person using it without buying something would?
contrary to popular beliefs people with money do drugs, and homeless people need the toilet just like the rest of us
San Francisco has a(n increasing and well documented) problem with public defecation and the reason literally everyone says is that there’s no free and accessible bathrooms downtown.
This is a manipulation tactic that men use to make it such a pain in the ass to set a boundary with them that you don’t attempt it again
When people say things like “fine I’ll just never speak again,” tell them “Sounds like a plan” and move on. You don’t have to cater to them. If they want to act like that, then they can absolutely proceed to shut up until they learn some manners.
January 2019:
I lost weight when I went on my medication initially because it made me very sick and when I told people that was why, more than a couple would say stuff like “I wish I could get some of that” like you want a weird disorder that is awful and to be violently ill? just to be skinnier?
“After I got the biopsies, they did another mammogram. And I had to have my shirt off. And I was standing there at the machine. And the technician said, oh my gosh, you have such a flat stomach. What is your secret? And I was like, oh, I’m dying.“
-Tig Notaro
More proof that the ideal of thinness never had anything to do with health.
When I was 90lbs, I was very much so starving myself, and I don’t think I’ve ever gotten as many compliments on my body, as I did when I was that unhealthy.
When I was about 21 and dropped from a size 20 to a size 12/14 due to not having the money to adequately feed myself, my mom complimented me *so much*. I don’t think she’s told me “you look so good!” more times in my life than she did that spring.
I could have avoided those situations if I’d been better at setting boundaries, and the act of setting boundaries does not, in and of itself, make you an asshole.
I keep seeing these, “I was kind, and it got me hurt, so now I’m an asshole” excuse posts going around.
You not being an asshole isn’t what got you hurt. Your being friends with a bunch of assholes willing to take advantage of your kindness, and your desire to always be *seen* as a kind person, did.
You can keep your kindness without defining your character by it. You don’t need to be an asshole, you just need to be okay with people occasionally thinking you are instead of being desperate to never appear that way to anybody.
Because some people out there will *definitely* see you setting boundaries as being unkind to them.

I have so many questions
In the name of everything decent in this world, you have got to turn the sound on.
Aziraphale can manifest a halo, which he mostly uses as a reading light
He would
The halo isn’t really a ring halo either, just like Crowley doesn’t have horns. Instead, his entire head lights up like a glowstick.
Either that or no matter what angle you look at it it’s always behind his head like this:
Like Mickey Mouse’s ears.
I blew the dust off my tumblr and dug out this post (which I originally saw on Instagram) just so I could say thank you for inspiring this ridiculousness. Crowley likes to sleep, Aziraphale likes to read. A bed is comfy for both of these things, so sharing works. Usually. After all, Aziraphale was just enough of a bastard to be worth liking. <3
because honestly you guys were exactly right (more nonsense over at Ineffable Wives on Insta)
holy shit this is the best possible addition to my post, this cosplay is amazing
Europe is currently being burned alive and people still think climate change is a joke. It’s warmer in North Europe than in the middle eastern deserts.
Nearly all northern countries broke their decades old heat records this week.
Its only in the low hundreds in farenheit??? In America we get that for like a month or two straight every year??? Y'all need to deal is it really normally so cold over there that yall can live with a little heat???
If you’re gonna have an ignorant American attitude then please only stay on American posts. No one in North Europe has an AC in their houses. Stores, animal shelters, elderly houses, no one has AC. the houses are designed to keep the heat in. The people are not accustomed to the heat. A sudden climate shift like this is extremely dangerous to older people and babies specifically.
There are programs being run to inform elderly people what to do to not die in this heat. There was a heatwave in the Netherlands in 2010 in which approximately 500 more elderly people passed away than normally.
One thing people don’t often appreciate is that the southern US states are along the same latitude as the Middle Eastern deserts, rather than northern Europe. We’re not competing with Texas, we’re competing with northern Canada. If Saskatoon can’t handle Mexican weather, London can’t handle Middle-Eastern weather. It’s not built for it at all.
very helpful and informative graphic
Also...
Canada CAN handle heat waves for the most part -- because a lot of the country is used to huge temperature changes throughout the year. I live where it can be 30C in summer and -30C in winter.
Europe and the UK generally have less fluctuation than we do. And that means they'll have more trouble with outlier temperatures.
they’re doing their own thing and it’s awesome

When people compare the greatness that is The Simpsons to other animated shows like Family Guy it makes me want to set myself on fire
I went on a date last year and jokingly said “Don’t ask me I’m just a girl” and giggled at a 35 year old man thinking he’d get the reference and instead he said “that’s what I like to hear.”
#that is when you start shoving breadsticks in your purse
The days of the Simpsons being so genuine are long, long dead.
