doing research in the field of humanities is interesting because there isn’t necessary this paradigm of the most recently published studies are by definition the best that you get in the hard sciences, like sometimes that book published in 1909 really continues to be the best foundational text about 1590s amsterdam, but then again sometimes i’m reading a text published in the 60s and it starts describing italian culture as “oriental” with no further discussion and i’m like hmmm maybe i should find something a little more current

i wonder how much linguistics research or consulting went into the eridian grammar in PHM, because it's just so good. i think it's a lot better than people even realise. like for example they both intuitively agreed that repeating a word adds emphasis and intensity- which is a REAL THING that is extremely common to creole and pidgin languages, languages that are newly created combinations between different cultures and languages. ring a bell?? anyway that feature is called reduplication, ex: "bad bad" is worse than bad. amaze amaze! another thing rocky does is make a distinct phoneme at the end of a question, which is called an interrogative particle. like when he says something like "when Grace last sleep question?" in english we tend to place these at the front of a statement to denote a question, so "you like this" becomes, "do you like this?" japanese and chinese have the interrogative particle at the end of statements, japanese using "ka" and mandarin "ma". so in japanese "I'm okay" (daijobu) becomes (daijobudesuka). IT'S SO FUCKING COOL. some sci-fi snobs accuse PHM of not properly being hard sci-fi and that's fine if you wanna be that way, but i think the most important part of the book is the relationship between rocky and grace, and some real rigor really was applied there and i appreciate it andy weir!!!!!!
