And after the War of Wrath, Mairon changes and takes on more of Melkor. He’s still a workaholic, true. But there needs to be a throne, and if Melkor isn’t there to sit in it, then Mairon will take up that mantle too. Mairon somehow finds it in him to do both of their jobs. The Ring, once it is made, enables him to sleep less and less. Losing his fair form along with much of his sanity helps the transformation. Third Age Mairon is as much Melkor as he is Mairon, and he clings to the throne and to the power and to the anger that consumes him.

So no, there was no chance that the relationship between Melkor and his Lieutenant would remain a secret. Within a few weeks it was known that Mairon shared his bed, and within a month or two it was known that Melkor actually cared for the maia. Yet by that point Mairon had more than proved that he had earned the position by skill. A few stupidly chattering fools were swiftly but painfully silenced. And before long Melkor and Mairon were seen as the joint Lords of Utumno, with Mairon’s orders and word seen as speaking in Melkor’s stead.

That’s so good! Honestly I imagine the both of them being absolute nightmares when the other’s trying to get something done; like, Mairon’s trying to read in his downtime? Nope, Melkor’s swiping the book from his hands and stealing smooches before Mairon can even think about arguing! And Melkor’s trying to draw up war plans? Nope, Mairon’s sitting on his lap and nuzzling his cheek and telling him he can work later!

But on a much softer note I can entirely see them both just actually needing that interruption at times because after all they are still at war and things need to be done but I see both of them as the type who will work much longer than they should. Although I can see both being much more pushy if that’s the case though. Like instead of just a kiss to distract Mairon, Melkor just full on picking him up and carrying him away. And Mairon just being very much like a cat and making it literally impossible for Melkor to work any longer by sitting on the table directly in front of Melkor and not moving to his lap until he has relented.

I totally agree on them both needing the interruptions! I imagine them both to be really hard workers and really committed to what they’re doing too, so sometimes, they just need their partner to pull them out of their own heads for a while and give them something good to think about instead of the war and they’re really grateful to each other for that. I love the thought of them getting really obvious about it; Melkor just lifting up Mairon and walking away with him is such a great thought, and I can totally imagine Mairon just sitting on the table and staring Melkor out until he gets the attention he wants xD

I honestly can see that it just dampens the mood a bit because they are more serious and the war is all that’s on their minds but just having that distraction at the very least balances it into a peaceful if not more relaxed mood. Melkor being the more bold one and taking Mairon away completely, but meanwhile Mairon is just making Melkor give in by probably sitting right in front of or over what Melkor is working on. But I can imagine that he always just like lets out a chuckle before tugging Mairon off the table and into his lap and leans back. I can totally see these moments just be where they either are completely silent or quietly talk.

Aaa, I imagine they’d have a lot of those moments; just those silent moments where they let each other know that they’re requiring some kind of attention without having to say it, then when they finally have each other alone, they just hold each other and stroke each others’ hair and let themselves relax for once. Since it’s so important to both of them that they win the war, I can see it being something that stresses them both out, so they just need each other as a kind of… anchor? Like, something in the stressful world that’s good and always going to be there, that kinda thing. Even big bads need their emotional support partners!

Yesss I entirely see them as just being each other's pillar in all of this because like sure the war itself is stressful but there is always that risk of losing the other too. I can see that it's just hardly a conscious thought most of the time and especially since their goal is to win and they can't actively worry about such things but it's also something that lingers and especially so for Mairon since I personally see Melkor as particularly reckless to get what he wants. But yesss I just love them quietly sitting and holding each other and just kissing and running their fingers through each other's hair.
