Everyone is the hero of their own story (or close enough to count, the clinically depressed scrupulosity-plagued are not ok in part because they don’t see themselves as the hero of their own story)
We see enough of the hate group folks around here on Tumblr that there’s not much excuse for not knowing what they think of themselves; they think they’re the ones who see What’s Really Going On, the ones brave enough to stand up for women/children/lesbians/their country/their ethnicity, while everyone else is living in fear and/delusion.
It’s actively harmful to tell yourself and others that ideology is personality, and distasteful ideologies are held only by inherently unpleasant people, because that’s not going to survive contact with the enemy! I changed my opinion of gay people from “perverts who hate God and love sex” to “just regular people who happen to be attracted to people of their own gender” after meeting suicidal gay virgins, who were obviously not having lots of fun perverted sex, and were obviously not being gay as a choice because they hated God.
I met nice, kind, friendly atheists, and Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims, and gay people, and trans people, and furries… And Trump voters. I had a problem recently , and needed a particular kind of help, and an old Republican friend was the only person I knew who even could help me, and he did, and was incredibly kind and supportive of me, and shared that my problem, which had felt so embarrassing and isolating and like something that nobody else had, was actually something he was helping a Lot of people out with at that time, because a lot of people were struggling.
Your ideology will loose a lot of adherents if it can’t survive contact with a nice, kind, helpful member of the opposition.
