Vote Binface
I love Count Binface for many reasons, but this perfect parody of dodgy election leaflet bar charts is pretty high up the list.

what's worrisome is that everyone has more or less the same primordial version of history these days when you look into mainstream discourses, just like putin. ukrainians say they're actually the real inheritors of kievan rus, the russians are asiatic barbarians. israelis say they have a 2,000-year-old biblical claim to the land. azeris and armenians go back and forth over who has lived in the caucasus since time immemorial. china says taiwan was always chinese and pulls out 17th century fishing maps for the south china sea. and so on, and so forth, none of this broaches the fact that the real problem here is that people are getting bombed, tortured, and raped in the name of these pathetic fantasies, not the veracity of the claims

The Enigma of Amigara Fault
This short story by Junji Ito is about a fault that appears in Amigara mountain after an earthquake. The earthquake exposes countless human-shaped holes in the mountain which seem to have been made about a thousand years ago. People, intrigued by these silhouettes, gather at the site and that’s when things get creepy.
It’s about a 15-20 min read, but if you haven’t read this before, you’re in for a treat. Link above.
i mean it’s not like i can just NOT reblog amigara fault. what if one of my followers is one of the lucky ten thousand who HASN’T been unutturably altered for life by it yet? go read it! it’s creepy, but trust me, it was made for you.

i swear to god saying that sexgender classing of human beings is a flawed and stupid way to classify an entire species will have the most bigoted people crawling out of the woodwork to tell you that women are actually the weakest creatures alive and predisposed to be raped and they don't see anything wrong with saying that ughhh and then they'll call themselves gender abolitionists
When TERFs call themselves gender abolitionists I see that as being the same as when christofascists call themselves freethinkers and free speech activists.
Their words are hollow when their actions and policy positions are so loud and clear on where they actually stand.
Dragon puppy tail wag.
Remember, history was awful. Never trust the romantics.
#you want to know a sentence that rewrote my brain:#most people have never been 20#more than half of humans ever born never made it to 20#which. is so crushingly sad to me i can't think about it for too long and also weirdly tempering when i'm angry at the state of the world#most people have never been 20! is it any wonder we're bad at being people sometimes! it's so new. we're young to it#anyway#i'm so stupidly grateful to live in the present and for modern medical technology (tags via @thoughtsformtheuniverse)
XKCD: Degree Off
Never Forget what Childhood Vaccines and Antibiotics have done.
The two most powerful words in the English language, owed entirely to the efficacy of vaccines, are thus;
“Smallpox was.”
For most of history, smallpox was (!!!) the scourge that haunted human civilisations. We have evidence of smallpox from mummies c. 1350BCE in Egypt. It’s speculated to be one of causative agents of the Plague of Athens c. 430BCE. There were outbreaks of smallpox in Angola in 1484, in South Africa in 1731 that wiped out entire clans of Khoisan people. There was at least one major smallpox epidemic almost every decade across Europe.
Smallpox was transmitted by droplet/aerosol infection; it tore through even the smallest population centres. Typical smallpox incurred a blistering fever, raised pustules, debilitating joint and back pain; if you lived — and that was a fat fucking if, as typical smallpox had a mortality rate of 30% — you’d have tell-tale pockmark scarring, and face stigma for the rest of your life. Some were left blinded.
The worst form of the disease was haemorrhagic smallpox; all the agony of typical smallpox, with the addition of skin haemorrhage and pinpoint haemorrhage in the spleen, liver, kidneys and gonads. Near-universally fatal, haemorrhagic smallpox made up 5-10% of all cases. Of this number, 72% were children.
The global smallpox vaccination campaigns of 1958 to 1977 were a monumental effort by the World Health Organization and its global associates, backed by incredibly diligent public health work and epidemiological monitoring.
Wherever there were outbreaks, there was herd immunisation. Health bodies campaigned tirelessly for the general population to be immunised. In the ‘70s, a concerted effort was made by the WHO to ensure vaccines were administered in the most remote and vulnerable communities in the Horn of Africa, South Asia and the Pacific.
In 1980, the world was officially, finally free of one of it’s oldest adversaries; universal vaccination had been achieved, and there was no population that could act as a reservoir for smallpox.
If mankind has only one great achievement, it’s the smallpox vaccine; to date, smallpox is the only human disease to be completely eradicated.
After over two millennia of suffering, mass disability and death, humanity finally had the means to give one of it’s biggest threats the biggest possible fuck you, and through scientific and public health collaboration, careful epidemiological monitoring and countless hours of on-the-ground vaccination efforts, managed to blot it from existence entirely.
Where there is vaccine coverage, childhood diseases with high morbidity and mortality rates like whooping cough, diphtheria, influenza B and have dropped.
We have vaccines for TB, another of our greatest and longest adversaries.
With enough effort to counter misinformation, more people fighting for vaccine equality, patent free medication for communicable disease, and universal vaccine coverage, and everyone making sure to keep up to date with their vaccinations, one day, we could be fortunate enough to be able to say;
“Tuberculosis was.”
“Smallpox was.”
Fuck. That hit me hard.
death and the stars
I'm quite fond of the heroes of my field have slain one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse
I don't want to insinuate that the "living forever would be awful and we should never do it" people are arguing in bad faith or know that they're wrong.
But it sure is Something that every single argument they make is based on misunderstanding their opposition as saying shit that no human would ever say. Like every single argument is just monkeys paw shit, malicious misunderstandings to twist something cool into something that sucks.
Like, you say that it would be cool if we could develop the technology to live forever
And they'll say that that would suck actually because you'd just be stuck in an aging decaying body with every single part failing but totally unable to die
And you explain that what the fuck, that's obviously not what anyone means when they say that and also not a thing we could reasonably develop the technology to do anyway. And the actual thing you're proposing, and that is the subject of research right now is technology to stop or reverse the aging process.
And they say that they just misunderstood, and clearly your real opinion is that you want to look young and hot forever, which is an entirely different thing and also the most reasonable thing to be a second guess but not a first.
And you explain that no actually the visual appearance of being old is not anywhere near as much of a concern as the degenerative effects it has on the body. The issue is the heart failure and the cancer and the alzheimers and failing joints and needing mobility aids and watching as the people you love wither away and die. And that the fact that we have a promising lead on how to prevent this means we have a moral imperative to do so.
And they say that they're still not convinced. Sure it sounds nice to live forever when you're young, but around year 500 you'd start to get bored and wouldn't know what to do with yourself. And you know that's true because there's a TV show about it.
And you have flashbacks to every conservative who goes red in the face at the suggestion of reasonable public transit and walkable neighborhoods, and very clearly, for some reason, thinks that "people do not have to use a car if they do not want to" necessarily means "your car will be taken away from you by force and you will walk and take the bus with minorities and be forcefemmed and whatever else goes on in the minds of conservatives"
And you try to figure out how to explain that there is literally no immortality enforcement mechanism that could exist where the enforcement mechanism would not be the issue, as it would be literal torture and would be precisely as much of a problem if applied to people who would die. And that "humans can live forever" does not mean "you will not be allowed to die." And that you believe in the right to choose death just as much as you believe in the right to refuse it.
And you decide it's not worth it because you cannot get someone to understand something they're determined to never ever understand. And you go to make a post on tumblr about it instead.
Or they're like "oh so you want the world to be ruled by a cabal of immortal billionaires while everyone else has to eat dirt and worms and live in the mud and die at 40".
And you consider pointing out that you could raise the same complaint about, like, basically any invention ever, that if the computer was invented today then this person would be claiming the computer will usher in a grand dystopia where only the ultra-wealthy can do things like communicate with each other freely at global distance or make certain types of art or do any of the automation that computers allow.
And then you realize this is one of those people who also holds such opinions as "any new advancements in medicine are literally eugenics" because they read too much YA and are terrified of anything new happening ever, and that if they were around for the discovery of fire they would be catastrophizing because you can kill and torture people with fire. And you realize there's no reasoning with them, so you decide it's not worth it and later end up bringing them up in a tumblr reblog.
(And later it also occurs to you that absolutely none of these people seem worried about the potential "car accidents jump to number one cause of death globally" scenario.)

the simplicity of lactase supplements is so funny to me. it costs like $4 to circumvent evolutionary biology. want to eat dairy but your body doesn’t produce the enzyme necessary to digest lactose? the devs haven’t patched that yet but you can download a mod
