after a personal tragedy, stiles leaves everything he knows behind for a job as the new deputy in a small town called beacon hills. it seems like an idyllic place to make a fresh start. maybe with the help of the local bartender, derek hale, stiles will finally be able to lay his ghosts to rest. but not everything is as picture-perfect and easy going in beacon hills as he first thought, and maybe derek and his family have their own ghosts that need taken care of.

Summary: An angsty post canon fic featuring FBI Stiles and wolf shaped Derek who both move away from Beacon Hills and meet up again several years later
*
Stiles runs.
He runs from Beacon Hills the first chance he gets. It isn’t the same once Derek’s gone anyway. The world is a little darker. A little less colourful. Like a spark has gone out. Sure, he has other important people in his life but no one who really sees him. Not like Derek did.
So he runs.
Not far enough to escape the shadow of the nogitsune. No amount of distance will do that. The darkness he carries, he carries for life; it walks behind him with every step he takes.

The entire week after Stiles had left the box of pastries at Derek’s front door had been quiet. As had the week after. So much so that he had started to wonder if maybe he had been mistaken. Sure, he’d had that feeling of familiarity following him; but in the years since the Nogitsune had been vanquished, Stiles had come to accept that feeling as normalcy.
After all, his shadow gave him that same feeling sometimes.
As did the heft of his firearm, whether in his hand or holstered at his side.

Warnings: none here!
For all that the past years seemed to have drawn Derek’s face in a different shade - Stiles couldn’t even explain how because obviously age and time didn’t etch its scars and fold into werewolves like they did for humans and Derek was as gorgeous as ever - all that aside, for a moment all walls around him, as well as the ones built to construe Stiles’ life, fell like jenga towers.
An overwhelming canyon of vulnerability seemed to be gaping between them, Stiles’ heart beating painfully and erratically against his chest before he could school his body back into full submission.
Derek must have heard but there was no need to be embarrassed, not with the way the werewolf was looking back at him, front teeth shyly peeking between slightly parted lips and those eyes. Swirling rainforest stormed eyes. Wide eyed and stark.
Open, if only for someone like Stiles who knew what to look for; that little sliver of something hidden, veiled by years of masking; akin to the surprised whisper of his name, an escaped prisoner of a carefully guarded secret; the glint of a long healed wound, revealing a once deep bleed. Stiles had seen that look before, multiple times, and it brought the memories rushing back in a flurry. It sent him back to the worn seat of his jeep that still stood in his dad’s garage in California, the air inside permeated by Derek’s blackening blood. Back to Derek going limp before Stiles’ hands. To waking up beneath his hands with a surprised gasp like Stiles was the only reason he could still breathe. Back to high school pools and finished sentences. To werewolfy deals in bedrooms and Mexico trips.

The kitchen is a whirlwind, like all restaurant kitchens, but to Stiles, Derek is the eye of the storm. Everyone else here is bent over a station, head down, in a groove, moving at pace to manage the dinner rush; Derek, though, walks between them with his chin held high and his mouth held taut, his tempo slower and smoother than that of everyone around him.

“It wasn’t a date,” is the first thing out of Stiles’ mouth, falling from his lips before Derek has even fully opened the door. “I mean, Collin’s great but he isn’t exactly my type. Like, I am into guys too - shit, did you know that? You probably knew that, right? Werewolf senses and all. Anyway, yeah, if you didn’t already know, I’m bi and I’m assuming that isn’t gonna be a problem. He’s a work colleague. It wasn’t a date.”
He stops rambling, then, acutely aware that Derek hasn’t managed to get a word in and is just staring back at him with that expression that’s half annoyance and half amused tolerance.

While he’s here though, he might as well take advantage, right? After all, Stiles hasn’t seen Derek in years, and despite trying to ignore that elephant in the room, what harm could trying to play a little bit of catch-up do?
Especially since, if he was being honest, Derek had started this whole mess first. It wasn’t as if Stiles had been actively looking for him for the last few months when the wolf had suddenly appeared on his runs. This was Derek’s fault if it was anybody’s.
Stiles didn’t even have to consider his next move as he made a pit stop at the general store a block down from his house. He could grab some frozen meals for dinner while he was at it if he didn’t forget in the midst of the chaos in his mind, because he couldn’t stop running through the whole visit to Derek’s on repeat. He trudged through every one of their movements and how they might have paralleled the whole drive over, counted the times their eyes had made contact as he parked, gauged every word that was uttered and what impact it may have had as he walked through the automatically sliding doors and grabbed a shopping basket. Somewhere along all these lines there had to be an answer. The inevitable point of no return of his mistake, the trains of thought and influences that lead him to thinking it was okay to just dive straight into the heart of the matter.
Into the only question that really mattered in Stiles’ eyes, and in this world it seemed, in his eyes alone. History had time and again shown it didn’t give much worth to Derek’s well-being. Or maybe that was just Derek’s choice. It was hard to tell.

@sterekdrabblesgonelong For the prompt words detect, foolish, second (7/7/21).Title from the Bleachers song Stop Making This Hurt. Many thanks to @jmeelee for the beta read. She made this fic better, much like she does my life in general. ❤️
Nursing second thoughts and his third tub of ice cream in as many hours, plaintive music drifting softly through the air, Derek was so distracted contemplating how foolish he’d been to let Kate mess with his head again that he didn’t even hear Stiles’ arrival until the door burst open and his now ex-boyfriend barged in.
“Okay,” Stiles declared, forgoing the usual greetings and in a tone that brooked no argument, eyes blazing, arms gesticulating wildly in Derek’s general direction. “So I can’t detect lies like you can, through heartbeats and chemosignals or whatever, but I know you, and I know you weren’t lying when you said you loved me. You were lying when you said you didn’t. This wallowing you’re doing just confirms it.”
“M’not wallowing,” Derek protested around a mouthful of rapidly melting ice cream, hand clenching around the spoon currently frozen in mid-air, halfway back to the tub for the next mouthful, but even he could hear how half-hearted it sounded.
“Dude, you’re eating your body weight in Chunky Monkey and listening to It Must Have Been Love on repeat!”
“It’s Cherry Garcia,” Derek mumbled.
“Whatever! She got to you again and made you do something stupid and now you’re wallowing instead of doing something about it!” Stiles snapped.
Derek shrank further back into the couch, trying to make himself smaller, spoon finding its way back to the tub and sinking into what little ice cream remained in it, as his head dropped to stare at the floor by Stiles’ sneakers-clad feet. He curled in on himself as if retreating from the world could protect him from all the pain it seemed to enjoy inflicting on him, but he knew it didn’t work that way. Life had proven it to him over and over again.
Through a combination of being always observant with those ever watchful eyes of his and just knowing Derek too damn well, Stiles sighed then, causing Derek to look up in time to see him visibly deflate, all the anger draining out of him. Tone softer, he continued, “Look, I don’t know exactly what she said to you, but I can guess, and she’s wrong. There’s no universe where I’m better off without you.”
“No?”
“No. So can we please forget all this breaking up nonsense and get to the making up part already?”
“You’d be safer staying away from me,” Derek, ever the masochist, persisted.
“Nope. I’ve got your back and you’ve got mine. We’re stronger together. Kate Argent knows that and that’s why she’s trying to plant doubts in your head. She wants us apart. But that’s not gonna happen. I’m not gonna let it, and neither are you. You’re stuck with me, big guy. So get used to it. Now, what’s a guy gotta do around here to get in on this Chunky Monkey action?”
“I told you,” Derek said, fighting back a smile, “it’s Cherry Garcia.”
“No Chunky Monkey? See, that just proves you need me around, to make sure your freezer’s always stocked with the good stuff, if nothing else.”
“Oh, I can think of one or two other reasons to keep you around…” Derek purred, setting his ice cream aside before reaching out a hand to draw Stiles closer, pulling him down to straddle Derek’s lap.
“So, does this mean we’re back together then?” Stiles asked with a twinkle in his eye and a teasing grin making its way across his face as his arms wrapped around Derek’s neck.
“Uh-huh.” Derek’s voice was muffled as he nosed at Stiles’ jaw before nuzzling his neck, lips dragging across the delicate skin there in a series of tender kisses that sent waves of heat cascading through both of them.
“Good,” Stiles replied breathlessly, “because I’ve heard makeup sex is some of the best there is and I’m eager to find out if that’s true. But, Derek…” He gently took Derek’s face in his hands, turning it to look him straight in the eye. “Let’s never break up again, okay?”
“Okay,” Derek pledged in earnest.
No promise had ever come easier to him and it was one he kept until his dying day (many, many, many years in the future).
In love with the idea of Stiles and Derek developing feelings for each other years after the show ends.
Given their shared, chaotic past, there hasn’t been a slow enough moment for them to actually share until now. The circumstances haven’t been just right.
But the best thing about sterek for me is the POTENTIAL for a relationship to develop. The underlying framework for a delicious chemical reaction - given the right circumstances. Like, that’s what most people miss. They think ya just take two hot specimen and throw them together in a scene and - //no//.
It’s these two characters specifically, these specific personalities and histories, in this universe or any other.
But we’re talking about their universe. How would that happen?
Slowly, at first.
Derek hasn’t moved back to Beacon Hills. He probably never will. In my head it’s not the type of place he wants to remember, a graveyard of family members and mistakes.
And with Stiles’ new career in the FBI, he isn’t involved enough in werewolf affairs to run into Derek again until years later.
When he does, it’s because of a fed bust. But it’s not Derek who they’re busting, it’s Derek they’re saving. They bring him into protective custody and the entire ride is hilarious because it’s obvious by Derek’s face that he hadn’t needed saving.
At this point there are an infinite number of directions for their story to take, but for funsies let’s pretend that Derek is placed into witness protection and Stiles is charged with guarding him.
(((Of course we’d need the obligatory scene that reveals there is so much more going on than either of them know, and they’ll have to work together to overcome their newest adversary. But that’s plot and I don’t want to talk plot.)))
Stiles drives Derek to a safe house directly after he’s given the order to protect him and it’s not an awkward ride, it’s an effortless one.
Weirdly enough, Stiles missed Derek.
And even though Derek is clearly annoyed by the sequence of events leading up to this point, the years have softened him and he’s not so highstrung.
He rests his arm on the rolled-down window as Stiles drives them to their beach house hideout, resigned to his fate, a coastal breeze swimming through the fabric of his shirt.
And from there it’s the moments in the early mornings when nothing but Stiles is awake, not even the house. The skies are white over the hushing waves outside, foggy light falling through bay windows into the kitchen where Stiles’ hand is wrapped limply around a steaming cup of coffee.
He always gets up early - because of his overzealous sense of duty or because he can’t sleep, Derek doesn’t know. But there’s a creaky floorboard right outside his door that Stiles has to pass to get to the kitchen in the mornings, and after the first week, the noise transforms into his alarm clock.
He tucks himself into his clothes, hair ruffled and face stubbled, and slinks out of his room to join Stiles at the table.
And Stiles asks, “Do you want some coffee?” and rises to pour him a cup when he says yes.
By the second week, a cup of coffee is there waiting for Derek in every morning.
And it only starts there, blossoming through all the little moments.
When Derek wades unbothered into the freezing California ocean, body glistening in the winter sun, looking otherworldly and invincible, Stiles watching over the rim of his sunglasses from the warmth of the patio.
When Stiles cooks for Derek at night, dish towel thrown over his shoulder, feet bare against the hardwood floor, sprinkling this and that before bringing the wooden spoon to his lips to taste - and smiling victoriously, like he’s cracked the code.
When they catch each other in the small vulnerabilities of domesticated life: Derek finding Stiles asleep; Stiles catching a glimpse of Derek turning the corner in only a towel; the sound of Stiles’ surprised laughter when Derek says something unexpectedly funny.
The way that their eyes always find their way back to each other, whether from across the room or the across the beach.
